For me:

cruising - no, you’re on a cruise

flexitarian - also no, you’re a meat eater

I've no idea what those mean 😅

It means to outclass somebody or something in a slangy way. "They totally mogged me with their new car."

Box fresh

I’ve heard it used in reference to new trainers and couldn’t understand why they just didn’t say new trainers.

But yesterday a tv presenter spoke about new legislation regarding bereavement leave from work which had just become public knowledge . She said they’d just heard before going on air and referred to it as box fresh. 🤷‍♀️

Grabbing a shower 🤣

I did exactly that a few months when my bad knee gave way while I was washing my hair in the shower. I reached out and grabbed the shower and the feckin thing fell off the wall 😩

As I get older so many words/phrases irritate the hell out of me, but about a year ago on a thread (about a rubbish dh) a poster said when she's poorly her amazing dh makes her "nourishing soups". I nearly gouged my eyes out and I haven't been able to eat soup since.
I've noticed that everything on marketplace is described as either vintage or mid-century now. No, your crushed velvet corner sofa that was bought in DFS 3 years ago is not vintage. And cane conservatory furniture is not mid century, it's just 30 years old. So I've added vintage and mid-century to my list now too.

Ick. Meaningless. 🙄

"Enjoy" - well, yes, but enjoy what?

'Teamwork makes the dream work' 🤮

'We're like a family here'🤢

If this relates to your workplace you have my full sympathies.

What a crock of contrived, trite bollocks.

RaraRachael · 25/09/2026 16:55

Our last Headteacher was always spouting the "Teamwork makes the dream work" shite and also, "Be the best version of yourself".

I also hate "normalcy" that seems to be creeping in.

Jonesmaximus · 25/09/2026 19:29

Oh god yes the dreaded "work family". Eh no, you're my colleague, not my family!

Executive functioning

Lots of these are Americanisms that have perverted our fine language. Oh how I long for a return to the days when their elected head of state was an educated, intelligent fella like Clinton or Obama (overlooking the copious relationships with interns£ rather than the narcissistic gargoyle currently in office.

Btc76 · 25/09/2026 19:43

’Boils my piss’ tbh really boils my piss

My favourite. I LOVE 'boils my piss'. It's so ... uniquely descriptive.

Sorry, not sorry. And there's another truly wanky one.

Btc76 · 25/09/2026 21:01

‘C*tface’ is so obviously a feminised equivalent of ‘d*khead’ and such an invented word for this site. No one has ever used it in the real world.

Stop being CFs and just say DH like you do real life, you bunch of DHs (meant ironically, obvs)

oh and ‘obvs’ too

Poor you - but also, yes, that's what that word combination means!

Grab isn't even quicker to say than "have" - same number of letters and everything...

Cadeaukatze · 27/09/2026 17:25

Can anyone explain where the "speak to" slides/topics thing came from? I always make a point of saying I will speak "about" but it doesn't seem to be catching on!

ScaredSceptic · 27/09/2026 18:03

I don't know if this is just me but the constant use on here of kind/unkind makes me cringe so hard. E.g. "That was unkind of him OP"; "It would be kind to do..."; "Please be kind".

I find it incredibly patronising - to me it sounds like something you'd say to a young child, not to another adult. I can't imagine ever saying to another adult in real life "oh that was unkind".

RaraRachael · 27/09/2026 18:52

Another only seen on MN - "Use your words"
Fine if you're talking to a toddler, but not other adults.
