I lived in Wales from age 3 till 3rd year at secondary school. I had started learning Welsh from moving to secondary school as O level was compulsory. There was a Welsh stream for those who spoke it as a first language and they were taught entirely in Welsh so we had alternate weeks of Welsh and English assemblies, I can still sing along to some of the hymns. We all joined the Urdd as well and practiced recitation in Welsh for competitions. I picked up quite a bit in primary too as we learnt some there. We had family friends who spoke Welsh as a first language and one of them had translated some stories from the Mabinogion into English and gave me a copy of her book.

I have attended a couple of funerals in Wales in the last couple of years and was able to sing Calon Lan and remember how to say the words even though it is so many years ago now.

My DH grew up in Cwmbran. He supports England. This would never happen in Scotland, I tell you!

I met and chatted with Dame Rosemary Butler - all I've got.
Oh and I love Kelly Jones.

My children's father is Welsh. Didn't drop the Welsh surname post divorce. The family have a long Welsh heritage and I have a Welsh miner's lamp from my late fil.

Does that count?

DS1 went to RWCMD for his degree. That's about the limit of my connection.😆

This evidence aside I’d have said the same about Welshness people! That’s really most unusual!

cardibach · 01/10/2026 00:02

In the interests of filling the thread - we Welsh are generally an inclusive lot. We’ll take anyone who wants to be Welsh!

My SIL lives in Cardiff. Is that enough to let me stay?

NEW: How does Burnham’s conference speech land with voters when they see it it?

In short, very well it seems. A thread on some new video testing of the PM’s speech among voters by @persuasionuk.bsky.social

That's an interesting reason @DuncinToffee . I wonder what proportion of the electorate will have a reasonable level of exposure to the speech.

BIossomtoes · 01/10/2026 12:44

This is really interesting.

Nevertheless, it does show us something important: people like Burnham even more when they’re exposed to him; many of his core themes & arguments carry people and can push up his numbers and vote share.

The ownership agenda esp - if delivered - could be really powerful for him.

It's clear that exposure of proposed agendas do gain good responses if they appeal to the electorate.

Putting the proposed good agendas down by saying welfare needs cutting as in "tough love" as Badenoch has called it, is counter productive.
