Ending the triple lock is effectively taxing pensions. Let's hope that's matched by taxing millionaires a bit more too.

It’s not taxing pensions, it’s putting them on a slightly better footing than other benefits. I’m all for a wealth tax though.

My dad was head of my primary school. I remember having one day in school to pick up work and his obsession with keeping the oil lamp wick in good condition at home. He ever list that fear - as a 90+ yr old he waslways very keen to keep a torch on charge at all times. You would have thought he’d have fears from more serious things since he was RAF (not air rew, but overseas) in the war, but power cuts really did his head in.

My abiding memories of the 1970s power cuts are wearing my duffel coat in school and doing homework by candlelight at home also in my coat

And best of all going into Woolworths and shopping by candlelight

I know my parents were very stressed by it all but as a young teen I found it all quite novel and exciting

It really is. Please stop lurking and stick around, MrsB.

I might just stick around... I'm feeling more hopeful today than I have done for quite some time.

There are lots of questions still. Much of Burnham's focus was on stuff beyond the next election, and I'm concerned about what he can realistically deliver before that while sticking within the boundaries of Starmer's manifesto.

Plus removing the triple lock is a gamble. And we don't have much detail about a lot of the plans yet.

But for the first time in a long time, it feels that we have some direction. And a leader who has the courage to make bold decisions.

cardibach · 29/09/2026 22:23

I’m wit( you @MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack I want more and sooner. Stuff whether he has a mandate. Tories be very cared. Just do something!

@MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack Judging by posts of yours I have seen on other threads, I think you'll fit in quite nicely here.

Yes! I actually feel like things really will improve. It feels like it might finally be about the people, not about the billionaires. He wasn't trying to placate reform voters or stir up hate either.

@MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack welcome to your natural home on Mumsnet.

I agree with this, @MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack, I love reading your posts.

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 30/09/2026 08:47

Ah, you're all so lovely. Thank you for the warm welcome. ❤️

I've been questioning recently whether spending time on MN is good for me, as the general tone and content has become so toxic. Plus I have stuff going on in my own life right now which is probably making me less resilient and therefore less able to tolerate it. But perhaps you lot will be the antidote that will help to restore my faith in humanity - I recognise many wise, compassionate posters here who have helped to keep me sane on some of the worst threads, and from whom I've leaned a great deal over the years.

TemperanceWest · 30/09/2026 08:57

I think many of us have felt the same way about how the site is going Mrs B. Sometimes it is nice to avoid it all and just post here and on lighter threads. But I always seem to let my self be drawn back in on the toxic stuff.

I am thinking of maybe having a sober October equivalent of not posting on anti-immigration threads.

Re:Burnham's speech. I wonder if Badenoch will have to rewrite hers in the light of the praise he has had for not using it to point score.

It's also the first time in a while we've actually seen forward planning. Talking about after the next election. I'm really quite impressed.

Re:Burnham's speech. I wonder if Badenoch will have to rewrite hers in the light of the praise he has had for not using it to point score.

Nah. I have "pensioners who have worked hard, all their lives" on my bingo card.

BIossomtoes · 30/09/2026 09:11

I think he’s played a blinder. He’s even got praise from Tim Stanley this morning. Obviously the contingent that would condemn the most Tory policy ever if it was presented by a left wing politician won’t have a good word to say about it but most commentators are positive with reservations. It was described on Newsnight last night as “the best political speech of my lifetime”.

Marr was praising it too and said similar.

DuncinToffee · 30/09/2026 09:15

The Tories have already started a petition to stop 'scrapping' the triple lock

And Rupert Lowe has been referred to Prevent and the Parliamentary watchdog over his anti Muslim rhetoric.

It would be great if Kemi could rise to the challenge and avoid the point scoring. I can't see it happening, personally - I'm not sure how much else she has got.

She's going to have to change the nature of her attack though. Her previous attempts to discredit Burnham seem to have focused mainly on him being a people pleaser who won't be capable of making difficult decisions. I don't think that will wash any more.

Yes. And something about Labour being the party of welfare and other spiteful stuff as per.

The people pleaser line always baffles me. Would she prefer it if he was a people hater? As you say, the "difficult decisions" line won't wash now.

Looking forward to finally getting back into the EU, although it may take a decade.

It certainly was a great speech. As has been said, it will be tough for Kemi to point score against him at the Tory conference next week. However, I don’t really think she’s capable of any other way of doing politics.

placemats · 30/09/2026 09:27

It's difficult to make a speech on the back of one that's hopeful and optimistic, without resorting to political point scoring, especially if your USP is being able to have an argument with yourself (with a nod to John Crace).

Agree that she won't be able to avoid it.

Eta for spelling

I think the only issue with this is that all the significant stuff seems timed for then. Without it happening sooner there won’t be an ‘after the next election’ opportunity. I disagree about it being the first time there’s been this sort of planning too - there has been all along, just it didn’t much get reported.

cardibach · 30/09/2026 09:58

I do agree it was a good speech though. Clear and with a bit of what we call ‘Hwyl’ in these parts. And there’s not much I disagree with in there, other than the speed (or lack thereof).

I think the real challenge is that people are feeling the pain right now, and it's about to get even worse. I think they will want to see solutions now and he is going to need to figure out how to convince people that it's more than just talk/jam tomorrow.
