I’m assuming that none of these Christian patriots raised a pray for world day of migrants & refugees on Sunday.

Poor Fanny though. Stuck in jail until next March.

countrygirl99 · 29/09/2026 19:00

I became politically aware in the 1970s too. I even delivered leaflets for the Liberals when Jeremy Thorpe was leader. The 3 day week was my trigger when I was 14.

MsJinks was told off on another thread for calling him Fanny. I found it really weird that anyone, other than his acolytes, would care. There are some on MN I suppose.

cardibach · 29/09/2026 19:07

i grew up with two parents who were South Wales miners’ children. PM was on the radio every evening and discussion was had - at first mum and dad and my older sister, and then me when I could grasp what was happening. I don’t remember not being politically aware. I was 6 on 1970 so it would have been at some point in the 70s.

Karistyleaftea · 29/09/2026 19:14

@countrygirl99 I remember. TV went off at 10 pm and we had no heat at our school so we had to go to a different school, still had to wear our fancy school uniform though which they loathed and took the mickey out of.

I did have a little look earlier at the "Is my sister prepping too much " thread ( something like that ) and it does make you think, 'cos you know, it will never happen .
Like a world pandemic.

They raised their fascist arms instead.

I remember school closing too (primary) There wasn't really any alternative so we had to work at home.

countrygirl99 · 29/09/2026 20:10

I remember doing my homework by candlelight.
Dad worked for a small engineering company doing the quotes so if they were asked to quote for a job he went in even if he needed to work by candlelight wearing his coat. Funnily the boss stayed at home.

Lurking in here to see responses to Burnham's speech, which I felt was very powerful.

And your comment made me smile because I can't remember a time when I wasn't politically aware either. My parents lived and breathed politics, and there was always lively discussion in our house.

I have a very strong recollection of meeting Tony Benn at a rally in Cambridge when I was around 5. I remember him crouching down to my level and addressing me very kindly.

I'm not sure if it would have been possible to live in our house without an awareness of politics!Grin

I haven't watched the whole speech yet. got distracted by other stuff

Now now. They just have awkward waves.

@TemperanceWest I made the typo I’m keeping it. I rarely go on other threads these days so it’s only the lurkers here that will have an issue with it.

Tommy Ten names is in court on the 19th. Reasonable chance he could be in jail for Xmas as well.

Joy to the World!🎅

Sorry, it is far too early for Santa. Although the shops have some of their Christmas stock out already. 😡

My Christmas wish list book present is Naomi Klein: "End Times Fascism".

I’ve just watched it. I think delaying so much to after the next election is a mistake, especially pension changes. I did like the general direction though, despite being Burnham-sceptic.

Maybe Tommo and Tommy ten names could share a cell for old times sake

And welcome @MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack

My dad was head of my primary school. I remember having one day in school to pick up work and his obsession with keeping the oil lamp wick in good condition at home. He ever list that fear - as a 90+ yr old he waslways very keen to keep a torch on charge at all times. You would have thought he’d have fears from more serious things since he was RAF (not air rew, but overseas) in the war, but power cuts really did his head in.

I confess to having a tear in my eye listening to AB talking about his Dad as it made me think of mine. He used to take me along with him when he went to vote and I remember walking to the church hall in 1970 and him explaining it to me - ‘Labour are for the working class, the Tories are for the RICH!’. I can still hear the disgust in his voice.

My grandad use to talk about ‘caPITalists’. Like a spit.

SerendipityJane · 29/09/2026 21:26

Ending the triple lock is effectively taxing pensions. Let's hope that's matched by taxing millionaires a bit more too.

countrygirl99 · 29/09/2026 21:28

I remember my dad taking me to a hustings, I must have been quite young ,and him getting really angry with a candidate who criticised Barbers Castle's appearance.
