This is excellent news

Should never have been scrapped!

Should never have been scrapped!

I remember how good Sure Start was. It provided a brilliant group for mums and toddlers when DD1 was small (she came to us aged 1 in 2010). But by the time DD2 came to us in 2013 (also aged 1), the Sure Start centre had closed.

It’s just an abandoned building now in an estate which has gone downhill during the last few years. It’s very tragic indeed.

It was folly and such a false economy. Ideologically driven of course.

it was a false economy - for health & educational attainment and therefore for future earnings.

You want the healthy tax payers of the future? People who are able to reach their potential, whatever that might be. Then you invest in them at the first opportunity.

I think he’s played a blinder. He’s even got praise from Tim Stanley this morning. Obviously the contingent that would condemn the most Tory policy ever if it was presented by a left wing politician won’t have a good word to say about it but most commentators are positive with reservations. It was described on Newsnight last night as “the best political speech of my lifetime”.

Wow. What about Chris Mason? If he was anything other than scathing I would be stunned.

Zonder · 30/09/2026 13:13

cardibach · 30/09/2026 09:58

I do agree it was a good speech though. Clear and with a bit of what we call ‘Hwyl’ in these parts. And there’s not much I disagree with in there, other than the speed (or lack thereof).

That's a word I haven't heard for a long time. Especially in politics!

It’s extremely versatile and useful! One of two Welsh words that I think English coukd do with a direct translation/equivalent of - the other being Hiraeth. There was a bit of that in the speech too…

Impressed with the breadth and urgency of the speech. Sceptical about Burnham's capacity to deliver.

Not scathing, but not massively positive either. Lots of doubt expressed…
Not sure he thinks Burnham’s emotion is a good thing either (I, on the other hand, do)

Andy Burnham during his speech to the Labour party conference. He is pictured against a red background, with his head hanging down.

Chris Mason: Andy Burnham delivers deeply political speech with a personal core

The key thing to understand about Andy Burnham's speech is these were the words and the delivery of both a new prime minister and a grieving son, the BBC's political editor writes.

Now that one, I have come across before.

I really ought to try learning Welsh at some point. My grandmother was a Welsh speaker and my dad has a smattering, but I only know the odd word. Perhaps a project for retirement when I get there...

I absolutely think the emotion is a positive.

I’ve lived here in various places since 2001. My daughter was Welsh medium educated until 13 and is bilingual. My dad was a first language speaker (but never spoke it at home when I was growing up). I’ve tried. A lot. But I’m not a linguist and my ability is patchy to say the least. It’s quite fun though.

It's the trying that counts, as they say!

I'm rather a lover of language learning and I seem to be curiously good at it, so it seems an obvious thing for me to pursue. At some point, when I actually have some time...

Use Say Something in Welsh app. It’s slangy and doesn’t explain grammar but I reckon it’s a lot better for conversational Welsh than other offerings. You can get t(e standard courses online sometimes too if you like the grammar.

I lost heart at mutations.

Not a shame if it makes her look foolish and wrong. She’s been proved wrong about Burnham being a ‘people pleaser’ after all.

Yes, I agree. What I meant was it's a shame that it's all the LOTO has to offer. Sorry, I should have phrased it better.

Happy to oblige but someone has to put it in a title/phrase

I will do the copy and paste Smile

I agree Say Something In Welsh is good. Duolingo can be confusing because of the many differences between North and South Welsh. Dysgu Cymraeg do online and Zoom classes and are great - the online classes have participants from all over the world. I go to an in person one.
It isn’t an easy language though- it was my first language, my mother is fluent. but I’ve forgotten most of it. Mutations come naturally after a while, they evolved in part to make the language easier to speak. But even so, any good teacher will tell you not to stress about the mutations and just speak!
