Yes, I agree. What I meant was it's a shame that it's all the LOTO has to offer. Sorry, I should have phrased it better.

That is true enough. It’s a pity that there isn’t a better opposition.

Teimlo’r hwyl - feel the hwyl.

I lost heart at mutations.

Ignore that. Eventually the sound of it gets in your head and you just know if it sounds right - and it won’t affect your communication anyway.
English has some, incidentally - the apple, the dog. An apple, a dog. It’s just sounds to make things flow better.

Perfect 😁

Is my sense that the squirrel ploppers seem to lessen when it's a furrin thread title ?

I had to Google that as well. I've encountered similar in other languages. I quite like idiosyncrasies like that, but I appreciate they make life harder for learners!

No, that's a thing. We're also giving them zero ammunition at the moment.

SerendipityJane · 30/09/2026 14:25

Staying on topic, it's interesting that the news is being loaded much more towards the Tory response and very little (not a bad thing) from Farage and (only)fans.

Or is my algorithm broken ?

Of course that could be a deep media conspiracy to lure Burnham into a snap election.

DuncinToffee · 30/09/2026 14:29

Lowe has commented that they now have a real fight on their hands.

I think Farage and friends are still trying to link small boats to Fairford.

I wondered if the Standards Committee investigation had reached the stage of interviews and Farage was busy not being coached by his legal team.

Them and Trump

I've already staked my claim in "the other thread*" that it's some sort of police cock up gone large.

My nan, and her siblings were all Welsh speakers along with most of her neighbours (mum and I lived with her in my early years).

My mum speaks a little but has forgotten much, mind can be described as patchy to none.

Zonder · 30/09/2026 15:19

My Gran grew up with a Welsh speaking mum and English speaking dad. What she liberally passed on to us were words like ych a fi, twp and cwtch. And the ability to sing Mae Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau and Sospan Fach.

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 30/09/2026 15:40

There are a lot of us on this thread with Welsh heritage!

It's almost as bad as The Rest Is History !

I have a good line in Welsh language chapel hymns which dad would belt out while doing the washing up!

Welsh heritage and left wing views are good bedfellows, @MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack !

It would seem so!

My father might best be described as an evangelical atheist, as was his father before him, but he nonetheless likes to belt out some of those old chapel hymns!

PickAChew · 30/09/2026 16:33

I had a Welsh uncle.

That's all I've got.

DuncinToffee · 30/09/2026 16:42

I have been to Wales and watched Welsh comedy, detective shows on telly.

Does that count?

Same.

countrygirl99 · 30/09/2026 16:50

I went to university in Cardiff. That's the nearest I get to Welsh heritage.

The types of mutations vary in difficulty. Soft mutations soon become easy to hear as @cardibach says. If it's wrong, it just sounds wrong. What I do like about Cymraeg is that vowels are usually the same sound. Whereas in English, 'a' for example, can be pronounced in a number of ways.

RafaistheKingofClay · 30/09/2026 17:34

I have a Welsh step parent and can remember about 2 words of Welsh from my attempt to learn it as a teen obsessed with Catalonia and other Welsh bands of the time.

Now in a minute I have nailed though.

Catatonia, surely ?

And was it NME or Q that had a caption of Cerys saying

"Cerys Matthews so Welsh it hurts"
