Do your children call your brother in law uncle ?

Does it depend on how close they are, if they see them frequently?
I'm a bit surprised to hear the neice of my sil refer to my brother as her uncle.
The neice is an adult in her 40s , wasn't close to my brother
First time I've heard her use the word.
It's in connection with selling the house he lived in with his wife.

Yes, they are Aunt and Uncle (even the ones that are not married).

Cattenberg · 05/09/2026 20:32

Yes, my DD calls my sister's husband "Uncle [Firstname]".

imnotwhoyouthinkiam · 05/09/2026 20:33

I don't have any BILs, but my DC call my SiLs Auntie.
My uncle's wife is my Auntie. My Auntie's husband is my uncle.

My step-siblings DC call me Auntie. And I've got a "bonus niece" who is my SILs sisters DD. She calls me Auntie.
Family is more than dna.

Absolutely

When I was a kid, any spouse of my parents sibling was also given the aunt and uncle title, not just the sibling. And yes my dc call my sisters’ husbands uncle as well (my sisters’ kids call my dh uncle too)

DewDropsAndCobWebs · 05/09/2026 20:33

Yes I did, my kids do as well

MadMazie · 05/09/2026 20:34

Tell me you're white without telling me you're White 😂

Every family close non-family elder is uncle or auntie in my family. I couldn't imagine just calling them by their name.

rereturner · 05/09/2026 20:34

We call some of our parents’ close family friends aunty and uncle too

OneSparklyGoat · 05/09/2026 20:35

I do call my husband’s aunts and uncles “Aunt this”, “Uncle that” out of respect and closeness. We are 50+ and they are in their 70s.

The exception is one Uncle married more recently and so my husband didn’t grow up with her. We just call her by her first name.

sesquipedalian · 05/09/2026 20:35

Of course they do. What else would they call them?

NeverWearingHeelsAgain · 05/09/2026 20:35

Sorry do you mean do my children call my sister’s husband uncle? Of course, doesn’t everyone?!

BuffaloCauliflower · 05/09/2026 20:36

Yes any spouse of an aunt/uncle is also aunt/uncle. That’s always been the correct convention, I’m not sure why you’re surprised. My kids also call my cousin and his DW aunt and uncle because that makes sense for our family.

NoelEdmondsHairGel · 05/09/2026 20:36

Of course…. Would be weird not to.

WhyArePiratesCalledPirates · 05/09/2026 20:36

All my friends are "aunty" my BIL is 100% an uncle.
What else would she call him?

AllJoyAndNoFun · 05/09/2026 20:37

I had to think about this- so DH has 2 brothers and a sister. The older brother and sister they call auntie/ uncle ( the uncle is a bit more on and off now they’re teens but DH’s sister is always auntie x). The ( much) younger brother they just call him by his first name. All their partners/ spouses just first name. My sister they call auntie/ first name interchangeably.

fiveyo · 05/09/2026 20:37

I had two aunt and uncles growing up (in both cases the aunt was by marriage but there was no differentiation).

Ohtoberetired · 05/09/2026 20:38

Yes of course. My last living aunt (my mother's brother's wife) died recently and I still called her aunty. I'm 64 years old!

toughnot · 05/09/2026 20:39

they are technically aunt and uncle whether by blood or married in but ours only use first names, no aunt or uncle prefixes. It sounds very old fashioned.

Glamghirl · 05/09/2026 20:39

I feel like this has something to do with money/inheritance...

NorthFacingGardener · 05/09/2026 20:40

Assuming that aunty and uncle were together when niece was born/ was a small child, then yes.

If your aunty gets a new partner when you are an older child / an adult, then no obviously not.

RichardMarxisinnocent · 05/09/2026 20:41

I had no idea there are people who DON'T call their parent's sibling's spouse uncle or aunt. Of course my dad's sister and her husband are "auntie Sue and uncle Bob" (not their real names). Do others really call them auntie Sue and Bob?

hexsnidgett · 05/09/2026 20:43

Yes of course, dh's sister and husband are aunt and uncle. My brother and wife are also uncle and aunt.

WildlyInappropriate · 05/09/2026 20:45

Yes, of course! My uncles have outlived my aunts, my dad’s sisters, and I am as close to them as I was to my aunts - they came as a package. I still call them Uncle X, even though I’m in my 50s and they’re in their 80s and 90s.

I’m from Glasgow and many children call all adults aunt and uncle if they are close to family. Growing up our neighbours would have also be aunt or uncle. Probably not as close to neighbours as we use to be a few generations ago.

re OP I don’t know what else you would call your aunt’s husband?

Wonderwall23 · 05/09/2026 20:46

I too had no idea people didn't refer to spouses as aunts and uncles. I'm quite intrigued as to who wouldn't!
