Things that people bang on about on here that you never hear discussed in real life

I'll start:

travel trousers. - just put some jogging bottoms or leggings on for God sake and stop being a twat
Wills - Maybe nobody I know inherits any money, but wills seem to be a big deal on here

I would never wear jogging bottoms. Ever. Trousers comfy enough for travel? I'd look at recommendations.
Wills are very important. Believe me.

Elasticated trousers jogging bottoms both the same thing really

Just thought of another one: handbags
People are always buying expensive handbags and want to talk about Which one to buy and give them names like they're people "does anyone round here own a Barbara? And what do they think about it?"

and I've never ever discussed handbags and I talk about clothes a lot.
So that means that everybody else is wrong and I'm right

Will are really important though. Especially if unmarried surely?

Important even if married once there are children too- we hadn't realised before doing ours that DS would have automatically inherited half with the IHT bill to match.
We've also made specifications regarding who should care for him, should the worst happen to both of us and sorted our POA at the same time. DH had been very aware of POA as his mum's had been in place a while with her MS and carers etc

School whatsapp groups.
None of the schools round here have them. Ditto to birthday party invitations!

You’re lucky to be free of school whatsapp groups. Me and DH are mainly just spectators but there’s been the odd occasion where it’s gotten ugly on there between people - often on a Friday night coincidentally 🍷🍷🍷. Alright for the odd bit of drama safari but generally a bit of a pain in the arse.

Breast feeding v formula. In real life no one is interested in how you decide to feed your baby.

I bf for three months apiece then moved onto bottles. I think MN would have a fit but no one cared in real life. Twenty odd year’s later two 6ft sons none the worse for it.

Agree wills are important.

covid! Some people are still obsessed and even testing.

DD1 lives in a care home. We want to know if DH or I have COVID, so as not to go and infect all the residents and staff, who look after her. I would not want to do a demanding job, while feeling knocked out by COVID!

(I wouldn’t go if I had a cold or flu either, but I only had Covid for the first time this year, and knew it was different from anything I’d had before, but wasn’t sure what it was)

QuinceTamarillo · 26/08/2026 14:29

I hear about just about everything mentioned here occasionally, if not IRL then certainly elsewhere online, including the words and expressions that, allegedly, no one ever uses except on Mumsnet. There are entire websites dedicated to, for example, handbags (see: The Purse Forum) and SUV hatred and trans rights vs women's rights and going no contact with "toxic" family members and home schooling and the dangers/downsides of surrogacy and weight loss intervention and ongoing COVID risks/developments, etc.

The topics mentioned on this thread that I genuinely have NOT seen elsewhere, or don’t recall seeing/hearing (leaving aside the obvious plants):

  • A chicken that can feed a family of 6 for a week. Was this perhaps a one-time comment that became a kind of running joke (even if not particularly funny)? Because that, too, happens a lot on online forums in general.
  • All of the replies on this thread that name drop brands no one cares about. (Except Dyson, which I do still hear about in the context of boycotting it.)
  • “Nub theory”, “wedding satire”, “parent and child parking”, “changing cushions to make your house sell”. Never heard of any of these, so I assume I also haven’t seen them on here.
  • Toilet brushes I think I've only discussed with people I live with, but I’ve also only seen the topic on here as a complaint about people mentioning them, never seen the actual organic mention.

Agree with private schools, IRL none of my friends/family went to private school or send their children to them. I definitely think I’m in the wrong tax bracket for mumsnet sometimes.

Don’t be fooled 😉

Oh yes the months of angst ahead of birth about when to present one’s baby to nearest and dearest. How many minutes per person can baby be held, with obligatory handwashing and no kissing rules. Followed by a ranting thread 3 months after birth that friends and family are not showing much interest in baby.

I must be an outlier as (after a c/s) new GPs came to the hospital (I wasn’t keen on them coming the evening of the birth cos I was exhausted but I tolerated it). After that though I welcomed visitors in hospital and at home and have lovely photos to look back on.
PILs looked after DD when I had DS so they had to bring her in the next day.
No-one expected me to get up, they made their own tea or kindly fixed me a meal.

No, I would never wear jogging bottoms, because I think they look awful.
I've bought some great wide leg trousers from Zara that are a lightweight fabric and don't crease too badly.

Car seats. If I ever see a primary aged child rear facing with knees up by their ears I'll know they're a Mumsnetter. Never actually seen it in real life

Also harry and Meghan, if I wasn't for the thread titles of MN I wouldn't have even know they were moving back.

It was a headline on all the major news bulletins, plus online papers, including the BBC, C4, Guardian and Independent

Lol me neither. Outside SM no one gives a toss about what they’re doing. I have commented on them before on MN, but I’d die of cringe if I brought them up to a real life friend. 🫣

Benefits
Fast passes at theme parks
Wills
Pensions
Going NC
LTB - there’s only one couple, who got divorced round here afaik, in the last 30 years; and none of our friends have
Boundaries
Bonding with newborn babies in a bubble, then complaining in a few years time that extended family won’t look after DC to give OP “a break”
Blended families (following on, from not knowing many divorced people)

Wait, you’ve only ever known ONE couple who’ve got divorced??? I’m pretty sure that makes you the outlier. What are you, Amish?

My parents and two siblings are all divorced and I’ve got at least a dozen friends I could name of the top of my head.

*tbf, my family are shit at relationships, but the point stands.

Not ever had a discussion about pensions?!
Best get sorted if you want a comfortable retirement.

NotMeAtAll · 26/08/2026 15:20

Trans people.

hardshoulderr · 26/08/2026 15:22

I have no friends or relatives who got divorced. Some people know lots of divorced people. Either situation is perfectly ordinary.

PatriciaRocks · 26/08/2026 15:24

I've come to the conclusion that some people just don't discuss much at all, including important financial concerns or things which are headline news.
Each to their own.

Screamingabdabz · 26/08/2026 11:20

People do give two hoots about males in women’s spaces but they don’t voice it to you because you’re clearly ignorant and dismissive of the issue.

It’s not about transwomen using toilets - it’s about women’s safety, dignity and privacy away from men (however they present).

If you happily wave men in to anywhere they like - toilets, changing rooms, rape centres, women’s sports then you should reflect on what consequences that has for girls and women before you so dismissively sneer at women who are concerned about it.

Well done for making this thread all about you!!!
