I'll start:

travel trousers. - just put some jogging bottoms or leggings on for God sake and stop being a twat
Wills - Maybe nobody I know inherits any money, but wills seem to be a big deal on here

How awful men are. Absolutely some men are bad. But there are also a lot of lovely men.

Yes, but no-one is going to start a thread saying her DH is lovely. They start threads for information and support if they're having a bad time in a relationship and need advice.
MN isn't a reflection on real life in that respect because people are sharing issues that they're trying to work through.

UnitaBath · 26/08/2026 12:21

Definitely the MIL thing, I’ve never known a place that hates MILs as much as here on MN, I don’t know anyone who hates their MIL.

I also don’t know anyone in RL who are as outspoken and nasty as some here especially AIBU. I’d bet my bottom dollar those on that board wouldn’t say boo to a goose in their every day real life.

Also the amount of people on here who appear to work full time, run households with kids AND find time to be super fit and work out all the time.

redskyAtNigh · 26/08/2026 12:21

Lots of people on MN don't actually seem to talk to anyone (so are not a good judge of whether conversations on certain subjects are had in RL).

Most people pick friends who have similar interests, backgrounds and values. I've never heard real life conversation about shows like I'm a Celebrity, for example, because it's not something that me and my friends are interested in, but I accept that many people are.

On the other hand we've had quite a lot of conversations about wills and PoA which may be because a lot of us are both caring for elderly relatives and thinking about our own arrangements.

No, I meant how do you know people "couldn't give two hoots" if they've never discussed it?
Perhaps it really does matter to them, one way or another, but they're too anxious to raise it?

If you think it's normal that friends censor themselves when talking to their mates because they're scared of getting cancelled we obviously move in very different circles.

No, I never said that.
You keep misunderstanding. I'll try once more.
You say you and your friends don't discuss it.
However...they don't give two hoots.
So how do you know they don't give two hoots if it's never mentioned?

Winederlust · 26/08/2026 12:24

What I find odd is the number of poster who seem to think that, because it hasn't happened to them or their social circle, it can't possibly be real or an issue for someone else.
So much so they have to start a whole thread about it.

My will was more to do with DCs—if DH and I were in an accident together, I’m not happy for the state to decide who raises my DCs.

BeMellowAquaSquid · 26/08/2026 12:25

I vote for wills too. I actually believe MN is a secret society of lawyers.

Yes, I think that's a fair point - it's generally about where you live and your stage in life.
Nobody gets upset about parking if everyone has their own drive - well of course not! Try living where there's no off street parking.

Yes Trans for me too. Everyone I know thinks live and let live. I've only experienced Trans women in the ladies once and they were universally welcomed.

I know 4 trans people in real life, two through work and two in my social circle, I barely give it a second's thought other than to listen to one of them who confided in me about the hellish time they had with neighbours who made their live a living hell. Never in all of my long life have I ever encountered a predatory man dressed in a frock in a toilet or a changing room. I have however like countless women been abused assaulted and harrassed by straight men.

MyKindHiker · 26/08/2026 12:26

Grammarnut · 26/08/2026 12:01

Everyone was afraid to say 'why are there men in here?', because everyone was treating blokes who think it's a turn on to violate women's boundaries with kid gloves because they were there violating boundaries and men can be unpredictably violent - especially those who are mentally unstable (i.e. TiMs).
There is also the likelihood if a woman complains to the bar owner that it is she who will be told to leave the pub and that she is banned.

^^ This is another thing I only see on mumsnet. Acting as though women are scared little babies who aren't in control of their own lives or their own opinions and must be protected from the evil scary men.

I tend to assume in real life if someone says 'I'm fine with that' it means they are fine. If someone says 'hello trans person I'm fine with you being in the same toilet-room with me and using an adjoining locked stall' that's what they mean and not that they are terrified into submission from standing next to a bloke in make up. I guess I just assume adult women are the best judges of their own opinions which also seems minority on mumsnet.

I think a lot of women would be scared of telling a man alone with them in a confined space that they were not ok with it. In case he turned nasty, not because they were scared little babies.

PatioDwellers · 26/08/2026 12:44

Yes, sometimes I see things on here and think 'OMG' do my neighobous hate us for having a bbq every sunday night....

Weddings - I go, or don't go, and am happy for the couple in their optimism. And wouldn't care if someone wore white.

Lifeomars · 26/08/2026 12:44

When I used to have a Twitter/X account (before Musk made it so horrible) I followed an account called Mumsnet Madness, self explanatory title that was the source of much entertainment. I have seen MN described as the "paramilitary wing of the Daily Mail" which is the only other outlet that has the Harry and Meghan obsession so there could be some truth there. Speaking and H and M, I was out with friends last week and we spent about 5 minutes talking about how tedious and boring the whole thing is and I doubt we will ever mention them again. I do read the H and M threads on here because it's an insight into a mindset I just cannot undestand.

Trans issues. Literally has never ever come up in my actual life, in discussion. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a trans person outside soho, or if i have in the changing rooms they have passed so well I didn’t notice

It comes up a fair bit in my circles, but I live in Fife - apart from the NHS Fife issues, we've had high profile cases of three violent local men trying to enter the women's prison estate. Two of them succeeded.

The only serious daily paper for the area has covered all of the above, as have all the Scottish red tops.

There were also reports in our local papers about a handful of high school pupils demanding gender neutral toilets so that they wouldn't be 'triggered'.

6ate9 · 26/08/2026 11:02

Men are NOT universally welcome! Just because some women decided they were in this instance, doesn’t give any man the right to use women’s toilets. It’s against the law.

And again!

I see RSV and kissing etc with visitors discussed a lot outside of MN, I certainly did when I had my last and I saw a doctor talking about it a while back. Don’t think it’s that unreasonable when you have a newborn at all. RSV was on the rise a few winters back, discussing how to reduce the spread is normal.

A family member had a baby recently. No visitors at home for a week and no kissing.

Ive worked with sick babies with RSV/ flu and even those affected by a cold sore/herpes virus and i think its personally valid to ask people not to kiss vulnerable youngbabies.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 26/08/2026 12:48

That someone could be ND because theyre a shit partner.
A twat is a twat is a twat and I dont know anyone who thinks otherwise.

Depends what sort of circles you move in because that's most of my friends.

Wills definitely a topic of conversation in our house and family. MIL's is causing no end of stress and prompted us to sort ours (that and bankers nagging anyway)

It's come up in my family, but that's because there was difficulty some years back when an elderly uncle didn't make a will.

I'm trying to sort out my affairs so that history doesn't repeat itself. Mind you, I doubt that there'll be Inheritance Tax to pay in my case.
