Things that people bang on about on here that you never hear discussed in real life

I'll start:

travel trousers. - just put some jogging bottoms or leggings on for God sake and stop being a twat
Wills - Maybe nobody I know inherits any money, but wills seem to be a big deal on here

Weddings! On MN they are an endless source of drama, resentment and validation (or lack thereof) of your relationship with the wedding planners, depending on your invite (or lack thereof).

IRL everyone I know just turns up to weddings and, generally speaking, is happy for the happy couple.

MyKindHiker · 26/08/2026 09:59

Going no contact with family members over totally trivial stuff (my fave yesterday was the OPs mum wanted to throw her a baby shower she didn’t want - the answer, go NC?!). in real life i don’t know anyone who sould cut their actual family off.

Mumsnet provides a place to talk about the things we don’t talk about in real life - you have hit the nail on the head, like;

  • financial independence separate to a man.
  • pensions
  • The importance of making a will
  • Organising power of attorney before anyone is sick or infirm
  • The impact not getting married on financials if you split
  • The importance of a Babylis Big Hair before we got older and could afford a Dyson Air Wrap. (Huge things and small things sit side by side)

People tend not to speak about things which will ‘rock the boat’ or cause upset and so lots of things don’t get spoken about.

Mumsnet has provided a space to do just that.

Exactly. Mn also has threads on regretting having had children, social class markers (not spoken about in RL as the whole point is that they’re unspoken shibboleths) how exactly you wipe your bottom and whether you fold or scrunch the toilet paper, awful baby names, ordinary turns of phrase that irrationality irritate you, piles, things you would never say out loud but think privately, jealousy of friends with more money, friendlessness — all these are precisely because Mn is a big, anonymous online space. You’re not boring or upsetting your RL friends by exposing yourself to them as a fascist or whatever.

Parking, maybe all my friends just have drives to park on

Pretty much everything tbh!

I often find myself wondering what I talk about IRL, because it isn't usually any of the shit I find myself talking about on MN 😂.

You're lucky. Try living in a terraced house with no off street parking.

paomara · 26/08/2026 10:03

Private education costs, places, standards.

Royal Family shite

I do 10 holidays a year, where's left and how far do I go, budget £1m?

Medical stuff. I swear there are wannabe doctors in every reply and they know about everything including the lingo. Very impressive sometimes.

Cleaning, cleaning, cleaning. Life revolves around cleaning. What's that, and who does a "deep clean" anyway and FGS why?

Handbags and style. I swear everything I see recommended costs hundreds and more and the same things are available in Uniqlo, Next and the likes for one tenth of the price. It's the labels dahlings.

MurielTheTerrible · 26/08/2026 10:04

Agree re the NC stuff. Don't know anyone in real life who has cut off their entire family, or even one person.
Gentle parenting - everyone I know just gave a bollocking/hug as it was required. No fucking bleating on for hours.

PatriciaRocks · 26/08/2026 10:05

I would never wear jogging bottoms. Ever. Trousers comfy enough for travel? I'd look at recommendations.
Wills are very important. Believe me.

Traypaint · 26/08/2026 10:05

Yes Trans for me too. Everyone I know thinks live and let live. I've only experienced Trans women in the ladies once and they were universally welcomed.

How on earth do you get "universally welcomed" in a toilet?
I tend not to notice other toilet users. I go in the cubicle, come out, wash hands, leave.

upupandaway45 · 26/08/2026 10:11

Oh where to start 😬

> wedding satire. Not once have I heard that lemon is too bridal 🤨

> LTB over the smallest inconvenience. Does no one value marriage anymore? Didn’t mean their vowels? Willing to throw it all away because dh didn’t take the chicken out the freezer.

> SUV’s being so hated. Never in real life have I heard anyone moan about them 🤷🏻‍♀️

Yeah, what's with being terrified of tradesmen using the toilet? Or generally being in the house? Weird.

I let a carpet fitter use my toilet and he was in there ages. Blocked my toilet, stank the place out with his poo and the cigarette he smoked in there. It was revolting. I had to unblock the loo and wash my towels.
Friend let the kitchen fitter use the loo and he peed all over the floor. Then walked through it back into her kitchen.
It does make you a bit wary tbh.

On thia occasion they were treated like celebrities. Busy toilet in city centre pub, everyone excited by the novelty, not worried about men in the ladies.

That's very unlucky. I've had tradesmen doing work of very degrees over the last 40 years and never once had an issue with them using the toilet.
Maybe just luck.

That might be the most ridiculous thing I have read on MN. Good grief.

Thrump · 26/08/2026 10:14

Oh lots of things! I do value hearing other perspectives even though I might find them a bit batty sometimes. It takes all sorts.

I've not fallen out with a neighbour, for example, for 25 years. I'm going round to my old neighbour's, from my old address, for dinner at the weekend. But it's interesting to see all the crimes I am constantly committing. I never take my bins in or collect my packages. I get up at weird times and work in the middle of the night. I am always on the wrong pattern for opening and closing curtains, somehow. I have all sorts of visitors, some quite disreputable. I call round my neighbours' without texting first. Sometimes I go out dancing of a Saturday night and bring friends back and they all sit in the shared grounds smoking fags and laughing. 😱

My actual neighbours don't mind at all - we all get on really well and go on outings together (often they are also sitting out the back) and eat together at the weekends - but oh I'd be a villain on Mumsnet.

Trans rights shoehorned into any conversation.

Can you imagine commenting IRL about a pair of trousers you’d bought from M&S and someone replying about trans rights in response?

Also boundaries. Everyone bangs on about them here. People never say that word to me in real life.

Ooooohhhyessss · 26/08/2026 10:17

MIL issues
M&H
Touching ,visiting or breathing near newborns.
NC with family
Avoiding phone calls / not answering the door
And so I could go on !
Bloody boundaries…have never heard the expression unless talking about land !

My uncle died of it six months ago with no pre-existing health issues so yes, unfortunately it is still ‘very much a thing’.

I am sorry to hear about your uncle, I think Covid is now like flu and it will be here for life.

I never see it discussed in this sense, but online I am sick to death of seeing people discuss the vaccine, about how the government were actually injecting you with poison, how it killed millions, how those who refused to have it are superior and the rest of us are ‘sheep’. (Not on MN, just online). It seems to be being brought up at such random times online. An article about a wildfire and someone relates it back to the Covid vaccine, anti vaxxers so exhausting.

Why on earth would people talk about trans rights when you mention M&S trousers? That's just bizarre.

Oh yes the months of angst ahead of birth about when to present one’s baby to nearest and dearest. How many minutes per person can baby be held, with obligatory handwashing and no kissing rules. Followed by a ranting thread 3 months after birth that friends and family are not showing much interest in baby.

Sounds like you probably embarrassed them with all that fuss. They just want to pee in peace and be treated like everyone else; making a big deal of it is quite transphobic.

School whatsapp groups.
None of the schools round here have them. Ditto to birthday party invitations!

I would not join a school whatsapp i couldnt tolerate that! 🤣
