Things that people bang on about on here that you never hear discussed in real life

I'll start:

travel trousers. - just put some jogging bottoms or leggings on for God sake and stop being a twat
Wills - Maybe nobody I know inherits any money, but wills seem to be a big deal on here

Parent and child parking

Limeisunderrated · 26/08/2026 11:21

I haven’t seen travel trousers discussed, so might have missed that.

I’m a member of class WhatsApp groups. They’re useful for reminders and birthday parties. Some people are pretty vocal on them, some are silent.

I test for covid. Lots of people do which is why they’re so easily available to buy. If someone said they had flu, I wouldn’t think they were obsessed. I wouldn’t ask if they’d tested or be surprised if they had/hadn’t (plenty of flu testing kits available too btw). If someone said they were cancelling or off work due to chickenpox or norovirus (both which have fewer risks than covid), I wouldn’t think they were obsessed either.

I know loads of people who have inherited money in real life! One even told people how much it was and what the tax bill was too. Money is a subject best avoided on here though.

TBH I’ve only ever known it within the family.

Not answering the door to uninvited guests…

in real life, my mum or MIL would knock on the window or ring me, or text “I’m outside”

I've never lived in a house as an adult where anyone would just knock on the door. Long driveways, rural life, no near neighbours. I suspect the dogs might lose their minds if we had people knocking on the door. As might I!

bitontheobtuse · 26/08/2026 11:25

Toilet brushes.

Class.

TheCabbageMerchant · 26/08/2026 11:25

Ultra-processed foods. Nobody I know in real life, friends, family or at work, give a hoot.

Weight loss injections. See above. Nobody cares who is using them or not.

I'm not sure about that one. My community midwives and HV were rabid about to the point of pushing me into PND when I was struggling and had infective mastitis, and a breast abscess. Before the abscess, the HV actually said "bottle feeding mothers put themselves first, breast feeding mothers put their baby first.

When I wanted help with switching to formula the NCT refused and the HV said it wasn't her job.

31 years ago - unforgettable.

That's horrific.

I hated NCT and gave them stinging feedback about their breast is best shit.

Thankfully the NHS midwife led antenatal course taught me how to makea bottle.

isthismylifenow · 26/08/2026 11:28

Absolutely no UPF food.

I live in another country so maybe it as much as of a no-no there as some posts make out on here.

But it must just zap some pleasure in life if every single thing has to be organically grown and cooked from scratch.

Imagine saying no to having an ice lolly in 30+ degree temps....

CeeJay81 · 26/08/2026 11:28

Anything about middle class life. Most people on here are much wealthier than the majority where i live. There are no private schools here either. Hardly anyone works from home or earns close to 100k.

I wanted to add about middle class as well.

It is not even a phrase I have ever heard in real life.

And then here, I it see it mentioned daily.

Well what do you expect, I take it you do realise working-class people have never been taught how to go to the toilet, they go in holes in the backyard that they have to share with the whippet, and it's a scientific fact that what they 'produce' is 10x more gross than the potpourri-scented bags of bodily waste middle-class people daintily produce? 🙄

😂😂😂

HairyAries · 26/08/2026 11:35

On thia occasion they were treated like celebrities. Busy toilet in city centre pub, everyone excited by the novelty, not worried about men in the ladies.

Did they walk through smoke dressed up as Cher?

Trans issues. Literally has never ever come up in my actual life, in discussion. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a trans person outside soho, or if i have in the changing rooms they have passed so well I didn’t notice

I live in trans central and have encountered several trans identified men. There is also a vociferous campaign to allow such men into women's sex segregated spaces, with some on X etc saying they are going to break the law as clarified by the SC, as it's transphobic and want to. That's why trans turns up on MN so often.
Also it is frequently unsafe to express gender critical views in public/at work/socially so this is a place where women (and some men) can find a space where they can see it's not them, it's the world that has gone mad!

Thatsillymama · 26/08/2026 11:38

School mum dramas
Private school
Earning vast sums of money but not being able to afford basics
Going NC over one minor argument
Huge salads

Who is at my front door, strangers on Mumsnet? I have a Ring door bell and the FBI installed cameras around my house but I don't want to actually go to the front door.

Why did my plasterer have to use my toilet?

Why did my plasterer not remove his shoes? In fact, why the Hell did he come into my house! Surely he can do this job remotely?

I hate cats, how can I rid create a cat-exclusion zone of 3 miles around my house? In fact, I also need to include men in that zone.

How very dare Harry and Meghan move house! How many candles has Meghan sold today, no need to check her website as the crazies of Mumsnet will update us!

My next door neighbour has the audacity to be making improvements to their home! I am trying to work from home, for goodness sakes!

The row I had in the supermarket today and the other row I had by the parent and child spaces.

Is May to early to visit Home Bargains for Autumn inspired home decor and an orange thing to hang on my front door?

Husband going to the gym every night and hiding his phone but there's definitely no other woman.

Do not be a SAHM, not even for a week. Your husband might abandon you and you will never progress in your career; you will die poor and alone with no pension.

I am very rich and I must tell you all about it even though no-one cares.

School mum looked at me.

School mum didn't pay me for thing I gave her.

I'm at the airport and the holiday is a disaster with the kids already! Should I go home?

MIL wants to see my baby 1 year after they were born. Should I allow it?

Man with bladder issue ducked into the ladies disabled toilet.

I hate trans people so therefore I must post about that hatred every day on MN even though I don't actually know a trans person.

'A hill I will die on'

'Get your ducks in a row'

'Cherchez la femme'

'First post nailed it'

'Serve a chicken with a big salad.'

FrippEnos · 26/08/2026 11:39

You don't hear trans issues spoken about in public because it is dangerous to do so.
Especially in the work place as it hass cost people their livelihood.

Toilet brushes.

Class.

Definitely class. So much benchmarking by average people. Very odd.

JoyousWriter · 26/08/2026 11:47

Trans people.
The royal family.
Six figure salaries.
Class.
Changing cushions to make your house sell.

Edited

I live in Australia and over here it's considered very rude to ask people about their income also nobody seems to care I don't get the whole crazy class system you have why does it matter what school you went to?

Slightyamusedandsilly · 26/08/2026 11:49

Trans. I know no one who is anti trans. In any way.

Most of my circle are pro and the rest have zero interest in with POV.

MyKindHiker · 26/08/2026 11:50

PatriciaRocks · 26/08/2026 11:10

How would you know if you've never discussed it?

Because usually IRL people talk about stuff they care about?

Like in my group of friends we talk about cost of living, the government, public transport, school, what the best flavor of ice cream is. All the important stuff. Trans? Never.

TheOnlyWayIsIlford · 26/08/2026 11:52

Having a Will is sensible if you have any savings, a house etc. And people don't know the best way to go about it.

And people's questions / concerns are not 'banging on' any more than anything you ever talk about is 'banging on'.

Very rude. Not interested? Scroll on.
