I'll start:

travel trousers. - just put some jogging bottoms or leggings on for God sake and stop being a twat
Wills - Maybe nobody I know inherits any money, but wills seem to be a big deal on here

Trans- in the last month I have come across two people that I and others have accidentally misgendered in a volunteering capacity. Both have gently corrected us. I did hear one say completely unprovoked that they are scared about the number of anti trans groups out there and why can't they just use the bathroom they want in peace.
Both in their early to mid 20s I guess so like with most things it depends on the people you mix with.

Pronouns are the business of the person using them, not the person who is the object of them. Very disconcerting to have to remember someone who looks female is 'he'. Also linguistically improper, removing the certainty of reference and interfering with the coherent meaning of a sentence. In their earshot name and bloody pronoun if absolutely must. Out of their earshot, truth.

Because usually IRL people talk about stuff they care about?

Like in my group of friends we talk about cost of living, the government, public transport, school, what the best flavor of ice cream is. All the important stuff. Trans? Never.

No, I meant how do you know people "couldn't give two hoots" if they've never discussed it?
Perhaps it really does matter to them, one way or another, but they're too anxious to raise it?

Speaking to your local MP

My local MP here in Australia is a arsehole he wouldn't help anybody and the whole town knows it

I live in Australia and over here it's considered very rude to ask people about their income also nobody seems to care I don't get the whole crazy class system you have why does it matter what school you went to?

Yes, it is the same here in South Africa.

No one really cares how much you earn. And I would never ask someone as you say, it is looked at as really rude.

And then what is the cut off in UK to go into middle class bracket? 😀

( we don't use the term working class either. In fact I am not sure what it even means)

Trans rights.

Harry and Meghan.

No one in real life has the strong opinions that you read here - they are barely discussed.

That's because some of the opinions can get you cancelled, cost your livelihood if discussed in real life.

Having a Will is sensible if you have any savings, a house etc. And people don't know the best way to go about it.

And people's questions / concerns are not 'banging on' any more than anything you ever talk about is 'banging on'.

Very rude. Not interested? Scroll on.

Absolutely. A Will is essential, and can be critical.

Yes! My son is on biologics for IBD and a dose of Covid could make him seriously ill. He’s entitled to antivirals. So we like to know whether it’s Covid we’re dealing with and that involves testing. The blasé attitude of some people takes my breath away. It’s almost as if nobody ever died of Covid or there aren’t thousands of people living with long Covid. But hey, it’s just a cold and we need to put all that pandemic nonsense behind us.

I agree. I am not eligible for antivirals, and was housebound for 4 months after I had covid 2 years ago. I couldn't walk, and I couldn't ride in the car as it made me severely dizzy, carsick, and would leave me bedbound for days after. So people who refuse to test, isolate, or who make fun of people wearing masks don't realise how lucky they are that they don't have to worry about it, but I do wish culturally that they remembered the same people they were trying to protect during lockdown are still out here trying to live a normal life while they deride our choices we make to try and protect ourselves.
I hope your son can stay well 🙏

Not answering the door to uninvited guests…

in real life, my mum or MIL would knock on the window or ring me, or text “I’m outside”

I ring the bell at any house I am visiting, expected or not. Don't go to places where I am unexpected very often or at all, in fact.

Yes Trans for me too. Everyone I know thinks live and let live. I've only experienced Trans women in the ladies once and they were universally welcomed.

Were they really welcomed? Or was everyone pretending in case they were outed as GC - social and financial death in some places. No-one will say because they are afraid of the TRA mob turning on them and they don't know they are not in a ladies sex segregated space that is not full of TRAs.

Anyahyacinth · 26/08/2026 11:59

FrenchandSaunders · 26/08/2026 09:18

covid! Some people are still obsessed and even testing.

Some people are immune suppressed and have to be careful not to pointlessly die ...my goodness

My friends are "obsessed" their daughter has had a transplant...what evil parents for caring about their little girl 🤦‍♀️

Thats like moaning people talk about cancer

RampantIvy · 26/08/2026 12:00

TBH most things.

However, I discuss things with friends and family that people on MN seem to be afraid to do in real life.

If I can't afford to do something
How to split a bill with friends before a meal
Saying no to requests that I either can't fulfil or don't want to do

I refuse to be guilt tripped into things, and everyone I know must sense that. Either that or I just have reasonable friends and family.

Traypaint · 26/08/2026 10:12

On thia occasion they were treated like celebrities. Busy toilet in city centre pub, everyone excited by the novelty, not worried about men in the ladies.

Everyone was afraid to say 'why are there men in here?', because everyone was treating blokes who think it's a turn on to violate women's boundaries with kid gloves because they were there violating boundaries and men can be unpredictably violent - especially those who are mentally unstable (i.e. TiMs).
There is also the likelihood if a woman complains to the bar owner that it is she who will be told to leave the pub and that she is banned.

Being "treated like celebrities" and "everyone was excited"? That's a strange one, isn't it? I've never come across such a toilet celebration.

Parking, maybe all my friends just have drives to park on

Lucky then.

GreenCandies · 26/08/2026 12:04

Ohhh I need to see these travel trousers

Thundertoast · 26/08/2026 12:06

Harry and Megan
At least among my circle, you'd be seen as a right weirdo for having strong opinions on H&M because the only time we discuss the Royals is when we are discussing Prince Andrew/Epstein. And we are not 'celebrity gossip is stupid' people in the slightest.
Everyone who has hate for H&M ive ever met IRL have been to be totally honest, not very bright and completely oblivious to the idea that these stories are hyped up for £££ by certain news outlets, the sort of people who think there's certain rules in life and not following these made up rules is WRONG!!!!!! And H&M are WRONG!!!!

Right, so... you have heard it discussed in real life?.

WonderWeeksArentReal · 26/08/2026 12:09

Rightly or wrongly, I don't actually know any unmarried parents IRL who gave DC their mother's surname

I don't know anybody IRL whose kids are at private school

I don't think I know anyone on a £100k salary but IRL no one I know discusses their salary.

The people I know who are anti UPF food don't 'bang on about it' they just politely decline it if offered and everyone moves on.

isthismylifenow · 26/08/2026 12:10

I thought of another one, and before reading it here I have never heard the term being used...

Autumnal

Autumnal clothing
Autumnal candles
etc. etc.

Traypaint · 26/08/2026 12:13

The only time I have come across travel trousers was on a group trip which included Americans. One of the woman there thought I had "fabulous travel pants".

They were a pair of elasticated harem trousers I'd bought for £5 on a market stall. Comfortable, weirdly warm and cool and no creases. I never really liked the way they looked, and didn't wear them much at home but they were indeed great for a hiking trip where I had to carry all my luggage.

BlackCat14 · 26/08/2026 12:15

LTB because he did something slightly irritating.

whirlyhead · 26/08/2026 12:16

Definitely all the trans talk. I've known trans people all my life, they've all been perfectly pleasant people and I've just treated them as people, I've never really thought about their sex. I have a good friend with a child who changed gender as well - also fine. We're all quite used to calling them by their new name.

Also cleaning - I do not know any people who clean their houses as much as some MNers do. I haven't mopped my floor in a month. The world will not end.

Harry and Meghan - never talk about them to anyone. An american once asked me what I thought of them and I cheerfully said I never think about them. I am just not interested (like a lot of other people).

Surrogates - I have a casual friend who was unable to have children and whose daughter was born to a woman in England. The kid is now 10 and has always been aware that they have 2 mums and is perfectly well adjusted. It works well for them and who am I to judge??

That’s something I just say in my head most days when I talk to friends about their other halves.

“Accidentally misgendered” ie spoke the truth which your eyes and ears told you.

I agree with a pp who says MN is the space to discuss what we often can’t talk about in real life.

#nodebate being a prime example.

How awful men are. Absolutely some men are bad. But there are also a lot of lovely men.
