I'll start:

travel trousers. - just put some jogging bottoms or leggings on for God sake and stop being a twat
Wills - Maybe nobody I know inherits any money, but wills seem to be a big deal on here

OP posts:

Not wanting to get smear tests
Someone of the opposite gender in a bathroom
How great home schooling is

WLI, never hear it mentioned and don’t see more people losing weight than years ago. I’m on them and can’t relate to anyone, and I’m all over the place meeting different people

Proved the point!

Men are NOT universally welcome! Just because some women decided they were in this instance, doesn’t give any man the right to use women’s toilets. It’s against the law.

The point is, in line with the OP, you don't hear that view IRL.

Speaking to your local MP

I'm often in touch with my MP, also my local councillor. If you want to make changes, you have to get active.

SerendipityCat · 26/08/2026 11:08

Friendship groups. Only ever hear about them on Mumsnet, which is probably just as well as they’re invariably stressful, if not downright toxic.

My closest friend inherited a quarter of her father's estate recently. The brothers took cash but she took a house. It's changed her life after fleeing her DH and DV. Her DC now have the security of a mortgage free home. This was discussed before her DF died as the brothers always wanted her to be secure.
We also recently inherited from MIL. Families do discuss wills and inheritance in my albeit limited experience.

I have never heard it discussed IRL. My only experience of trans women in women's toilets was that no one could give two hoots.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 26/08/2026 11:09

I had a person at work and a different person in my choir. Both trans

How would you know if you've never discussed it?

The baby thing has to just be on MN. I have never in my life (and I’m in my 60s) come across anyone being so precious that no one can see their new baby (serious baby illness in hospital excepted). It’s always been fine for anyone who wants to see new baby, be it family or friends. Barring even grandparents on here just doesn’t exist as the norm in the real world.

Quite when DS was born, my mum and step visited the following Sunday. He was born on Monday, I drove to and did a shop for their lunch on the Saturday! DH looked after him for 90 mins. It was bliss.

I understand the RSV point more than most because DS was v poorly with it at 4 months. However as a newborn, ai believe they have protective antibodies from their mother if breast fed, and people with a cold would stay away.

It is great there is now an RSV vaccine, my GD will be having it v soon. Meeting her in October (different Continent) and hope to give her mum lots of breaks.

CuriousKangaroo · 26/08/2026 11:11

I think some of the topics which we don’t hear about in everyday life are specifically only on an anonymous forum because they are the sort of things you can’t or wouldn’t discuss with others. Wills are an excellent example - many would consider discussing money and inheritance with friends as crass, but that doesn’t mean they wouldn’t find it helpful to get opinions so MN is an excellent place to do so.

The non private “topic” I have never seen anyone in real life care about or discuss is Meghan and Harry. Most people do not care, yet there are a bunch of MNetters who are obsessed.

Parker231 · 26/08/2026 11:12

Breast feeding v formula. In real life no one is interested in how you decide to feed your baby.

CalmFairy · 26/08/2026 11:16

Marriage.
Most of the men and women i speak to cant be bothered with it, yet on MN its a huge deal.

In real life some people do give ‘two hoots’!

RosesAndHellebores · 26/08/2026 11:17

I'm not sure about that one. My community midwives and HV were rabid about to the point of pushing me into PND when I was struggling and had infective mastitis, and a breast abscess. Before the abscess, the HV actually said "bottle feeding mothers put themselves first, breast feeding mothers put their baby first.

When I wanted help with switching to formula the NCT refused and the HV said it wasn't her job.

31 years ago - unforgettable.

Mumsnet provides a place to talk about the things we don’t talk about in real life - you have hit the nail on the head, like;

  • financial independence separate to a man.
  • pensions
  • The importance of making a will
  • Organising power of attorney before anyone is sick or infirm
  • The impact not getting married on financials if you split
  • The importance of a Babylis Big Hair before we got older and could afford a Dyson Air Wrap. (Huge things and small things sit side by side)

People tend not to speak about things which will ‘rock the boat’ or cause upset and so lots of things don’t get spoken about.

Mumsnet has provided a space to do just that.

Great post. Nail on head.

P.S. I don’t have anything to leave other than my house and I’ve got a will. I thought it was a totally normal thing to do - it’s about so much more than money. I’ve also got an LPA because if you become incapacitated without one it’s a living hell for your family. Have discussed both issues with friends as completely everyday conversation.

aliasfrog · 26/08/2026 09:33

That's because some of us are vulnerable and/or immunocompromised or spend time around people who are 🙄

And people who are immuno compromised, etc, are more likely to be at home more, so able to post on MN. This skews the results, as it were.
Before I get jumped on, I am GENERALISING. And perfectly aware that some very ill people continue working. But lots can't, so Bob around in the internet instead.

covid! Some people are still obsessed and even testing.

People are still testing???????
Presumably the same deluded fools who still wear masks?

EmptyInTheValley · 26/08/2026 11:19

Surrogacy. I never hear about it in 'real' life. Apart from that my cousin's wife was a surrogate, happily and successfully, many years ago.

OP's question was Things that people bang on about on here that you never hear discussed in real life.

People do give two hoots about males in women’s spaces but they don’t voice it to you because you’re clearly ignorant and dismissive of the issue.

It’s not about transwomen using toilets - it’s about women’s safety, dignity and privacy away from men (however they present).

If you happily wave men in to anywhere they like - toilets, changing rooms, rape centres, women’s sports then you should reflect on what consequences that has for girls and women before you so dismissively sneer at women who are concerned about it.

I let a carpet fitter use my toilet and he was in there ages. Blocked my toilet, stank the place out with his poo and the cigarette he smoked in there. It was revolting. I had to unblock the loo and wash my towels.
Friend let the kitchen fitter use the loo and he peed all over the floor. Then walked through it back into her kitchen.
It does make you a bit wary tbh.

Well what do you expect, I take it you do realise working-class people have never been taught how to go to the toilet, they go in holes in the backyard that they have to share with the whippet, and it's a scientific fact that what they 'produce' is 10x more gross than the potpourri-scented bags of bodily waste middle-class people daintily produce? 🙄
