When I was at primary school (late 80s) half the boys in the school had names like Darren, Mark and Lee. They would now be men in their late 40s/early to mid 50s but I don't hear those names much anymore. I can't remember the last time I met a Darren!

My plumber is Naomi, decorator is Tanya, house painter is Ollie and cleaner is Ian.

I honestly don’t recall one child named any of these names at my school in 80s and 90s. Admittedly private school so perhaps that’s relevant to some extent

I want to know the private school boys names!..... 😁

Exactly

what a peculiar response from @CordwainerBird

It’s just funny in the starkness; “no Darrens at my private school, goodness me!”. I know it’s true.

No skin in the game as I went to a single sex school so there were no Darrens, Lees or Marks anywhere, even my pals’ brothers.

No, that's not what I'm saying. I wrote "I don't hear those names much anymore"

Yeah so do you mean you're surprised that people younger than you don't have the same names as the generations before them (which is a bit of a silly question), or confused that given they were so popular when you were a child you'd expect to be meeting a lot of adult men around your age with those names and you aren't (which would make slightly more sense but your response suggests is not what you're asking?)

I prefer a good old-fashioned name myself. Classic.

They have gone out of fashion
I think Mark willl make a reapperance at some point as its a biblical name
Not sure about Darren and Lee i think they might have been very much of their time

Darren is now a plumber.

Lee is a grifter.

And Mark is in my heart as Mark from Flambards, one of my first loves.

I married a Darren 😂 he’s ‘only’ 40.

sadly, he doesn’t do anything so useful as plumbing.

The second part, I clarified that in a later post: I am surprised that I do not meet many men my age with those names since I went to school with so many. But it could be to do with various factors.

No, I would not expect to meet any young person today named Darren, Lee or Mark unless they were e.g. named after a much loved male relative. My DS has a very 1970s middle name which is a reference to his late uncle (my brother).

I only know one Darren, he's a city trader with homes in London, Padstow and the same street he grew up in (so he can look out for his elderly parents).

Mark is now a GPs practice manager.

Lee? I only know one, quite a famous bird watcher.

😱😱😱 why would anyone do that to their kid?

Darren and Lee are approaching their 50s now. They married Claire and Michelle respectively and their children, Callum and Ellie have just become parents to baby twins Arlo and Hudson

I would say more early to mid 50s

Eastie77Returns · 17/08/2026 10:57

Wasn't Princess Anne's first husband called Mark? I think the name straddles both the working class and middle class. Bit like Thomas, Edward and William which were all equally popular with working and middle classes in the 19th century and beyond.

CalpolOnToast · 17/08/2026 11:02

I was thinking nonsense, I know a Lee who's only a couple of years older than I am, then I remembered I'm 44!
