When I was at primary school (late 80s) half the boys in the school had names like Darren, Mark and Lee. They would now be men in their late 40s/early to mid 50s but I don't hear those names much anymore. I can't remember the last time I met a Darren!

I remember a Darren in primary school and that was in the 1970’s. He was English (am in NI) and I remember I had never heard the name before😆 It seemed to become more popular a few years later. I know two adult Darren’s in their mid forties. One painted the inside of our house and the other painted the outside! They knew each other and hadn’t a good word to say about each other. I know loads of Mark’s, young and old. We seem to like our biblical/traditional names here. We still get baby John’s and David’s and Michael’s. I’ve only ever known one male Lee who was in my class in primary school. I know a few women called Lee though. Late fifties/early sixties now.

Lee is always a wrong'un if there's a character called that on TV. We used to call the wanted section of Crimewatch 'The Wall of Lees'.

Any footballers called Lee were invariably featured in 1990s/early 2000s tabloids where they exposed as love rats or just general wrong'uns.

Jamie Lee Curtis! John Lee Hooker!

an add-on name, in the states.

My DS is called Mark. He’s 18.

Did you always love the name @Markisagreatname ? Does he like his name?

Pistachiocake · 17/08/2026 15:39

Same as the Sarahs and Rebeccas!
Seriously, Darren and Lee do make me think of men in their 40s, but I know Marks both older and younger (none in my immediate friends/family groups, but work/friends of friends etc). I don't know if it's because that's a biblical name, and associated as an ok for Royalty name too, so more likely to be a classic?

TheyGrewUp · 17/08/2026 15:41

I imagine they may have gone the same way as Clive, Nigel, Jeremy, Simon of my childhood in the 60s. Amanda, Deborah, Jane, Heather for girls. And of course the ubiquitous Mary-Jane, Emma-Jane and Sarah-Jane for girls: MJ, EJ and SJ.

aberamagold · 17/08/2026 15:44

My first love was a Mark. He became an investment banker.

Yes, he loves his name.

No, we didn’t always have it in mind. It wasn’t a name that I had always loved. I was fairly indifferent to it, tbh.

We just wanted a name that couldn’t be shortened to something we didn’t like and we don’t like made up, “unique” names.

It suits him very well.

My DS is a Mark. He’s extremely smart 💯🤣

Imarrieda1980sWayne · 17/08/2026 15:53

So I married a 1980s born Wayne.
My sister a 70s born Simon
And we have plenty of Dave's.
All of our names in my immediate family are top ten list for the year we were born.
We've got a full house 😆

Imarrieda1980sWayne · 17/08/2026 15:54

Oh and the bloke who broke my heart was a Mark.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 17/08/2026 17:05

I am always astonished that DS(17) has a friend called Ian. There’s nothing wrong with being called Ian, it’s just not a name I see very often, if at all, on the under 50s.

BeWarmKoala · 17/08/2026 17:11

I remember four Marks from secondary school in 1970's, 3 of them in my A level chemistry class. There seem to be lots of Danny's in their 40's a plaster and plumber we use plus two of our neighbours.

Aw, I feel nostalgic. I wish I could walk into a pub and be introduced to Gary, Lee, Mark and Rob. And their wives, Louise, Sarah, Amanda and Carol.

Actually I think there used to be lots of Alison’s too.

I think Carol is a bit older.
She’d be married to Nigel.

MrsMoastyToasty · 17/08/2026 17:34

Warren.
Brother to Darren, Karen and Sharon.

Clydebuilt · 17/08/2026 17:38

I know a 17 year old Darren…

My DH Darren will be 60 next year. I believe it originates from Darrin, a made up name for the character in the original Bewitched TV programme. It is very much of its time and to be honest we both hate it. But Que cera cera. My Darren is awesome, we’ve been together forever, and he has just sold his business for £8 million so I can overlook his chavvy name!

I’m also married to a Darren but he’s probably worth 8 quid not 8 million! But he’s a nice enough bloke though 😆

EBearhug · 17/08/2026 17:48

I work with them all. Darren, Lee, Mark. Also, John, Dave, Mike, Andy, Simon, Paul, Matt, Dan, Nick.

I have commented that we could do with more name diversity when we're next recruiting, though I'm not sure I could get that past HR as essential criteria.

I know a 19 year old Jason!

DelphiniumBlue · 17/08/2026 17:57

I work with 6 men and 3 of them are Mark! In their 40s, I think.
DS born in 1992 had a year group full of Oliver, James, and Alex, with a smattering of Sam, Ben and Thomas.
Im in my 60s and lots of men I know of my age are Mike, Dave, Chris and Andy.

MrsLFii · 17/08/2026 18:13

I know a few Darrens, several Marks and a Lee. So I presume they must all be in Devon with me 😂

MerylSqueak · 17/08/2026 18:13
