When I was at primary school (late 80s) half the boys in the school had names like Darren, Mark and Lee. They would now be men in their late 40s/early to mid 50s but I don't hear those names much anymore. I can't remember the last time I met a Darren!

My husband and I are early 50's. DH has three friends name Darren, two named Mark and my BFs husband is called Lee, they haven't gone anywhere lol!

We also know absolutely loads of Andy's (and most of those are knobheads!).

I don't see Mark as in the same category as Lee and Darren at all. Lee and Darren were seen as made up type names of the 60s / 70s. Same group as Wayne. I know someone will come along and say they have now but, I doubt an Ancestry users are finding rich seams of Darrens and Lees before the 1960s. Mark is completely timeless and classless, it's just not been popular recently. It's a good name.

I always thought where after actors/characters.

John Wayne
Gary Cooper
Lee Marvin
Darren from Bewitched

Naming after celebs is not new.

Lee is always a wrong'un if there's a character called that on TV. We used to call the wanted section of Crimewatch 'The Wall of Lees'.

Wayne - Runs the cup and saucer ride on Ilfracombe seafront
I just love this.

Eighties schooling here, left in 1984. There were loads of Darren’s, David’s and Kevin’s. Also loads of Tracey’s, Caroline’s and Sharon’s. I had a very different first name. It was English but incredibly old fashioned and I have only ever met one other person with it and it was last year, a really young bartender. I heard a colleague of hers call her and thought they were talking to me. I was the only one she had met as well. It was fashionable in the late 1800”s. My Dad was Chinese so picked it from a book. My English Mother liked it so agreed.

Oh, yeah, actors and characters influence names. But for that list, none of those were there real names.

Lee Remick was a beautiful actress, if anyone recalls her! And of course Lee Majors was the bionic man!

Maybe Lisa was more popular in the UK than Lee, for girls.

Treylime · 17/08/2026 12:07

I was at secondary school 84-89.

In my year there were two girls called Tammy. Never met another Tammy in my life after that.

I want to know the private school boys names!..... 😁

Ben, James, Toby, Rich/Rick, Charlie, Ed, Will Simon, Alex, Tom, Jon(athan). A few outliers, but most boys had those names.

Darren is now a plumber.

Lee is a grifter.

And Mark is in my heart as Mark from Flambards, one of my first loves.

My DS is called Mark. He’s 18.

AnitaCam · 17/08/2026 12:12

Arent there tons of Nicks too? Tons of girls called Nicky and boys called Nick.

ceramicfrog · 17/08/2026 12:16

I know exactly what you’re saying!

I have a name that was very popular in the 80s/ 90s - there were a few of us in my class alone.

Yet as an adult, I’ve only met two people with the same name!

That’s why I chose names for my DC based on how much I liked them and didn’t worry about popularity (I chose fairly popular names but they ended up being the only ones in their years anyway).

Im late 50s. Boys in my school were called Mark, Gary,Lee, Steve and Dave. At one point at work I had a team of 6 who were called Dave and Mark.
This was replaced 10 years or so ago with Matt, Josh and Ollie. It's just the way it goes

Matt, Josh and Ollie are late 20s, early 30s?

Had a Tammy at state primary in the 80s. Tamsins only at private school from 1990. I've met ONE Tamsin since. Very posh.

Think they migrated from private schools. Several Ollys, Joshes and Matts at private school ending 1999.

AnitaCam · 17/08/2026 12:31

I’ve never met a Tamsin. The outliers are Adele, Vivienne, Andrea, Imogen, and there was even a Daphne, which is now trendy again apparently!

absolutely the worst imo was the epidemic of Chloe’s. How on earth that happened I’ll never know. I always think of Joyce Grenfell playing the clumsy police officer called Chloe.

fairygarden26 · 17/08/2026 12:33

My brother is called Mark and Lee lol there in there late 40s now

bitontheobtuse · 17/08/2026 12:33

We have friends called Mark and Lee, and our plumber rejoices in the name of Darren.

Bluffinwithmymuffin · 17/08/2026 12:38

Darren and Lee are approaching their 50s now. They married Claire and Michelle respectively and their children, Callum and Ellie have just become parents to baby twins Arlo and Hudson
