When I was at primary school (late 80s) half the boys in the school had names like Darren, Mark and Lee. They would now be men in their late 40s/early to mid 50s but I don't hear those names much anymore. I can't remember the last time I met a Darren!

They all hated their names so much they changed them to Dylan, Noah and Oliver…

Or Olivia, Amelia and Isla.

My DH Darren will be 60 next year. I believe it originates from Darrin, a made up name for the character in the original Bewitched TV programme. It is very much of its time and to be honest we both hate it. But Que cera cera. My Darren is awesome, we’ve been together forever, and he has just sold his business for £8 million so I can overlook his chavvy name!

I want to know the private school boys names!..... 😁

Tarquin and Farquhar. Knew a co founder of a famous company who called their sons that. They went to Eton.

I know Marks and Darrens in their thirties. Haven't met a Lee in forever. Mark is a classic name , in the Gospel and will always be there. I know a Dara who was often called Darren in England. Or Daryl , Dai , Gary. This name doesn't seem to have existed before it was used for a character in a tv show in the 60s afaik. Bewitched?
Not sure what happened to poor old Lee. Every football team seemed to have a couple a few years ago.

CordwainerBird · 17/08/2026 11:09

I like the name Lee but I only know a couple and they’re both pricks. Marks are decent.

Ah sorry , @HappyImarriedaDarren i missed your post.

DH is 55 and went to a superselective boys grammar school. Half of his mates are called either Simon or Steve.

And Wayne. I know several Waynes in their 40s/50s - very few babies called Wayne now.

Wayne, Barry and Terry - that takes me back!

IKR, I’m old (55)

I forgot Gary!

I work in the construction industry and know a few Lees and Darrens.

Matthew Mark and Luke seem to always have a similar average level of name popularity and are not such a class signifier. There are not many Johns these days though. They're all Jacks instead! I know posh Jacks and working class Jacks.

LondonLass2026 · 17/08/2026 11:17

Yes I knew loads with these names at school in the 80s. Multiple boys were called Darren and Mark, in particular.

Also Steve, Nathan, David. Everyone I know called Dave is over 50.

I suppose "Baby Lee" or "Baby Dave" don't have the same ring to them today as they would have in 1985 😂.

TrugFullofLove · 17/08/2026 11:18

Darren - Fits your carpet
Mark - Does your MOT
Lee - Reform MP
Ian - Engineer. Wife left him. Spends every night in pub
Paul - Roofer. Deep tan and many affairs. He's the reason Ian's wife left him
Stuart - Manages a furniture showroom in a small seaside town
Andrew - Lives in his mum's old house now she's in a care home.
Wayne - Runs the cup and saucer ride on Ilfracombe seafront
Barry - Scrap metal man. Front teeth missing
Terry - Window cleaner. Tells women to smile it might never happen.

Barry 😁 I tried to get my friend to choose 'Barry'. Her married name is 'Potter'. She instantly dismissed 'Harry' 😂

I went to secondary school with a Lee, a Darren and a couple of Marks (1990s). Never met another Darren, but work with several Marks (aged 30-60) and have met a few Lee/Leighs over the years.

I think Mark will come back. I know several young Lukes and Matthews and one young John. Leo and to a lesser extent Leon are the new Lees I guess. I don't think Darren was ever in the same league as Mark and Lee!

ImADarren · 17/08/2026 11:22

I'm a Darren (name changed for this!), born in the early 80s

It's never exactly been a common name, think I've only ever met about 6 people with the same name, and I was 11 before I met anyone else called Darren.

It's not a name people even tend to recognise as a first name. I've got a very common first name as a surname (think "Thomas". It's not that, but it'll do as an example). I've lost count of the number of times I've been referred to as "Thomas Darren" by teachers, doctors, hotel receptionists etc. most of my job interviews have started "Hi Thomas", "It's Darren actually"

OvernightBloats · 17/08/2026 11:23

I know a Darren (now late 50s) who went to a posh public school - he was teased about his name.

The name now doesn't have the same association as it did in the past but it was definitely out of place in snobby circles. It was very fashionable at one stage and will probably come back into favour again.

TrugFullofLove · 17/08/2026 11:24

There were two Darrens in my class.

One was referred to as Darren Ears and the other as Darren Teeth.

I don't need to tell you why.

You're obviously a people watcher 😆

I think your probably a decade or so too young for it to have been popular
All the Darrens i know were born the late 60s early 70s
