When I was at primary school (late 80s) half the boys in the school had names like Darren, Mark and Lee. They would now be men in their late 40s/early to mid 50s but I don't hear those names much anymore. I can't remember the last time I met a Darren!

I know several Mark’s but they are all 50-70 years old

@AnitaCam

i met a 3 year old Alan (could be Irish spelling Alun going by his mum’s accent) never write off names! We teased kids in my school for having middle names like Arthur, Archie or Zach yet they are two a penny now

I still have Darren Lee and Mark in my orbit. Theyre still around.

Too early really for the new Darren/Lee/Mark babies as they are dad names, not Grandad names on the whole. BUT I have recently taught a John, Brian, Simon, Phillip and Ray so they are not far behind….

Alun is a Welsh spelling, not Irish.

Oh I thought Nigel was a Welsh name! No idea where I got that idea from.

It seems quintessentially English, but in fact Nigel is derived from the Irish name Niall.

Crikey. I knew the Scandinavian name Njál came from Niall but always assumed Nigel was of Norman French origins. Every day a school day.

Maybe from the wonderful rugby referee Nigel Owens?

I did know one Welsh woman who married a Welsh Nigel, got divorced and then married another Welsh Nigel. That's really bad luck.

I love the name John. I'd happily call a son John if I were young enough to be pregnant again.

I married a Darren, he’s in middle management for an accounting firm, although I’ve always thought his name doesn’t suit him. Apparently his mum was a big fan of Bewitched.

When I started online dating last year (am mid 50s with a filter of 49 - mid 50s) all the men were Steve or Andy
At one point I was texting 3 Steves - it was v confusing!
