Welcome to our long running thread for political discussion, general chit chat, a friendly hug and taxes in kind. 💐🍦 for anyone who needs them.

The capacity for lying by keyboard warriors should never surprise anyone. They never miss an opportunity to whip themselves up into a frenzy.

Thank you so much for your kind words. Yes, it has been hard realising that Lightning’s long-term quality of life might be less than what it should be. He is such an adorable cat too.

But at least he’s still with us, I’ve been through the loss of a beloved cat, so I know how painful that can be.

I agree with you about PIP threads, too. I don't post on them myself, they wind me up too much and I really don't want to get into argument, which would be a waste of my time.

The ginger one I posted today (Lasagna) has stage 2 CKD. He's not 5 yet. Vet thinks it was triggered by the infection that he picked up on the mean streets of Cairo (he's also an immigrant) which also resulted in him having all his teeth out.

But he's lucky, he's on medication and now at 2 years post diagnosis he is in better health than he was when we got him. He won't eat renal diet food but is fine with the medication and regular food plus poached white fish for dinner (which weirdly is cheaper than cat food).

My DS gets PIP, top rate, 10 year award. Because his conditions are serious and won't get better. He works. PIP enables him to stay part time and allows him to not cook when he can't and take taxis to work when he can't reah the bus stop.

Personally I divide the haters on MN into two groups: those who can't understand (because they are unfashionable) and those who understand perfectly well but enjoy the cruelty.

Ooh, party at my place. Bring a bucket.

Make sure you say that it's a bbq.

Gets coat and runs away.

I don’t normally post in political threads, but I wanted to share a little hedgehog tax, caught snuffling about in the undergrowth behind my garage last month, and later trotting across the lawn -

We found a hedgehog in our garden a couple of weeks ago and I dashed off to get water for it but it had vanished. I've left some out just in case, top it up when I bucket the shrubs.

I feel terrible that as a child I used to leave out milk. (Lived in the middle of nowhere - very common to see hedgehogs). They are lactose intolerant and it makes them very ill.

Sorry about your cat, Lizzie. You are right about the PIP threads. I have posted on the onr today and wish I hadn't. The utter lies that people write are just so bloody annoying, though. Sitting on my hands now and repeating @pointythings mantra.

You were amazing what you posted.

Although pointy is right and o should have heeded the advice to stay away 😂

dontcallmelen · 16/08/2026 18:05

Last sentence of your post sums them up Pointy it’s the purposely cruel ones that get to me I cannot fathom having such spite in my heart the most galling thing is politicians aiding & abetting the hateful narrative.

Making employers responsible for two years sickness benefit has to be their stupidest idea yet. When coupled with their plan to repeal the employment rights act, it will just lead to people being sacked for being sick, and those who have health issues or a sick record being unemployable.
All they'll achieve here is swapping out paying sickness benefit for paying unemployment benefit, and to far greater numbers, and for far longer because they can kiss goodbye to moving anyone with a history of health conditions into work.
I can only assume they've taken a bung from the insurance sector on this one because they are the only beneficiaries. The public purse certainly won't be.

dontcallmelen · 16/08/2026 18:41

Give em time @5128gap im sure more if the same is coming especially if Jenrick has been given a say & no doubt someone/organisation is waiting for a big payday because it sure as hell won’t benefit most of the population.

Edited

Insurance companies will do well.

As luck would have it Aaron Banks has extensive involvement in insurance companies.

dontcallmelen · 16/08/2026 18:45

What a happy coincidence for him.

DuncinToffee · 16/08/2026 18:57

When is the Standard Commitee's report due?

There will some more batshit policies before then.

My bar is very low. I don't expect them to factor in any care or empathy for people into their thinking. I don't expect their policies to take account of human suffering. But I did expect a policy to reduce the welfare bill to look like it was going to save some money.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 16/08/2026 19:06

Very sorry to hear your cat updates @countrygirl99 and @LizzieW1969. Best wushes to you both.

People with secret phones should disable all alerts. Their normal phone will have the alert.

DH had a selfie next to that outside St Pancras July last year!

Ha! Did he show it to his mates and pretend it was his? I've always wondered what people do with their selfies with the car.

Did anyone mention the risk to people who had a secret phone

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cwyllkz80dlo

????

It was well advertised how to disable alerts ahead of the test message. Abuse charities should definitely be aware and publicising it. I’d have thought everyone would have known of this after all the hoo hah before the test.

I edit that to heat enthusiast and it still wouldn’t allow it. I swear phones are getting worse.

He just sent it to DS1 who's car mad. But DS1 just said the colour was gross and DH wouldn't fit in it.
