A question only for those who think UK society has lost its way, in the fascist direction

How long do you think this will last? And how bad will it get? I'm thinking of Weimar Germany. So let's say 1929 to 1945. But then also the post way recovery. Will a whole generation lose their best years? I can't see things getting better very fast to be honest. I think things are going to get much worse before they get better. Much much worse. What do other people think? I'm not at all interested in the views of those who think that things are getting better. You go off to your own thread. This is for the really worried among us.

Question only for those who leap to comparing us to Nazi Germany at any possible minor civil unrest… Is it anxiety causing you to catastrophise or are you actually looking forward to it tuning out that way so you can be proved right? We are nowhere near that and it’s insulting to victims of the Nazis to imagine otherwise. For starters wanting economic migrants to stop coming here is nothing like trying to kill off entire ethnic minorities who have always lived in the country and have nowhere to go. But keep whipping yourselves up into a frenzy of fear and egging each other on.

This is naive at best. Look back at the early days of fascism in different countries. It starts slowly and there are parallels that can be drawn with the beginnings then to the rumblings now. There’s a fascinating book called ‘The Anatomy of Fascism’. I’d recommend reading it.

I saw it on X so it must be true. Etc etc.
In fairness there has been, the riots on Belfast being particularly bad. I don't want to downplay that.
But during the 2024 riots (as in right when they were happening) I remember being a bit worried about going into Birmingham but had to and it was lovely, people of all races going about their business and interacting with each other in the summer sun like a Beneton advert or some sickening mawkish video about multiculturalism. There was (horrible) unrest relatively close by but even in one of the cities worst affected, at the time it was happening, it wasnt everywhere.
As I said, I really don't want to downplay how bad it is that you get angry mobs trying to burn people's homes down. And it must be very scary to be a parent from a refugee background and be worrying about how your teenage sons will be perceived amongst all the disorder. But if Birmingham is anything to go by we are not at risk of civil war. Some sort of coordinated seagull attack and takeover yes.

This is very close to my own experience.

No I'm not remotely curious.
Does she really own homes all over the place?
As far as I was aware there is the former family home now held in trust for her disabled child and a flat in Brighton.
As a govt minister she may have access to a property in London but she will not own that.

She is 46, 30 years since she was a pregnant teenager. She has built a successful career, probably made a bit of profit on house sales like millions of other people.
What is the obsession with her financial affairs, there are plenty of others with much more dodgy finances - Farage's dodgy £5 million for one, who also owns 5 properties.

OK 😂 So no then.

And in spite of the fact that I didn't mention any particular Government and specified the problems with ALL Governments, you're triggered because I dare criticise your beloved Labour government and can only defend someone who was sacked for being a liar. 😂

Yeah a really balanced view 😂

Nothing to do with immigration.
And it’s easy to see the parallels.

friedaklein · 26/07/2026 10:28

Glasgow Unite the Clans rally. Have a look. Violent thugs attacking non- white people disguised as " concern over immigration".

raspberryrisotto · 26/07/2026 10:38

We do not live in the UK and the area in which we live is a melting pot of cultures, languages and customs. Of course, there are still some issues here but I love that my DC have grown up here and this is their norm, but it is soul destroying trying to explain what is happening in the UK, and why their family members hold certain political views.

I am thankful that is not their norm…

I don’t know what the answer is though.

There is far more hate online than in real life. Most of it is fake, created to further an agenda of division. Unfortunately it does influence people in real life, but what is said online does not accurately represent what is actually happening. Online communities and social media magnify hate, because it drives clicks from both sides. Then people think that's how things are irl because it's all they see.
I do agree that it is worrying. Seeing conservative Christianity, anti science views etc on the rise, online at least, is extremely scary. The US is a malign influence.

Couldn’t agree more.

You see many posts online say the RNLI shouldn’t help migrants in distress in the channel. Actually how many would feel that if actually faced with that situation? Hopefully not many, or maybe I have misplaced faith in humanity.

Absolutely agree that the US is a malign influence, I just hope Trump actually discourages that approach over here given how awful he is.

Weimar Germany?

Are we having to pay reparations now??? The treaty of versailles was 107 years ago.... Not sure we have an equivalent.

Historically, this is such a stupid post.

This is why GCSE history matters in school.

At one point what happened under the Nazis was 'nowhere near' what it became, too. But it happened. Fascists rely on people assuming 'that could never happen' and accusing others of catastrophising. Do you really think those who ended up having to live through the atrocities of the Nazis saw anything so utterly terrible coming? Highly unlikely, I'd say, not only because it's beyond the reach of what most people could ever have imagined, but also because Hitler purported to be on their side and speaking their language. Much as the far right are doing now.

Would it be possible for there to be a part of MN just for white posters, in the interests of equality?

Why would you need one?

There has been some civil unrest in UK. I saw police in riot gear with crowds trying to push past them and throwing things. It's happening across Europe. In Northern Ireland there was a mass riot with fires being set and groups of men with their faces covered going to the doors of HMOs, one of which was set on fire, groups of men in black stopping cars and checking who was in them.

Actually it's perfectly reasonable to look at the period that have rise to our last experience of full blown fascism in Europe and ask if we are going through a similar period. None sensible thinks that this means there has to have been a recent Treaty of versasille! Well, some do, perhaps because they want to deny any parallels?

And if you did study history, you'd know that it is very common to look for historical parallels between one period to another, and speculate about what we can learn from doing so.

Weimar Germany was 1919-33. Third Reich was 1933-45. Which era are you wanting? Weimar was the hyperinflation, Third Reich the fascism.

It's not comparable. Society is way too different. Too many generations of advancement. The former Yugoslavia breakup might be a better yardstick.

Hitler wrote Mein Kampf in 1923 after a failed putsch and became Chancellor of Germany in January 1933. The Law for the Prevention of Hereditarily Diseased Offspring was passed in 1933. People started to be forcibly sterilised in 1934. There was no clear divide between the two eras.

I agree 🎓 and as a History graduate I can see many worrying parallels between the propaganda of the 1930s and the present day.

You and your cronies and your post asking only people who agree with you to read, you are spitting hatred yourself. Go shopping, read a book, join a club, anything to help your issues.

I don’t mind reasonable debate, and I’ve read plenty of books. I went shopping yesterday. Nice try, but I want to be on this thread.

I’ll tell you who the fascists are – the so-called ‘liberal’ left! They have IMPOSED mass immigration and multiculturalism on Britain and destroyed any sense of shared culture or shared history or shared identity.

A speechwriter for Blair said their plan was “to rub the right’s nose in diversity and render their arguments out of date.” Needless to say, by ‘the right’ he means ‘anyone who disagrees with us in any way.’ Those are the words of a fascist. When you “rub someone’s nose” in something you are a fascist and a bully. No one on earth is more dictatorial, intolerant or hate-filled than a metropolitan liberal. But because their spite and hatred is directed towards middle-class Daily Mail readers, somehow it doesn’t count. You can demonise their national heroes. You can destroy their identity. You can turn their world upside down, and make them feel like outsiders in their own towns and cities. And if they get angry and hit back, they’re still the baddies and you’re still the goodies.

The smugness and hypocrisy of the left takes my breath away.

Edited

The Daily Mail published an article called “Hurrah for the Blackshirts!” in early 1934. They are publishing slightly more subtle material now.

Where is the civil unrest in the UK? People are obviously fed up but I'm not seeing civil unrest.

There were riots after the Southport murders during which a mob surrounded a hotel housing asylum seekers calling for it to be burned down.

More recently, there were riots in Belfast with arson attacks on homes.

I see these incidents as examples of civil unrest.

This government wants to remove jury trials and charged anti genocide protestors as terrorists- already pretty fascistic.

Does anyone think this could be to do with digital ID ?
