I leaned into the culottes and polka dot trend this season and was delighted with this bargain in Sainsburys last week. I thought I looked great. Effortless and summery chic etc etc. Until 14yo DD looked up at me with withering disdain and asked why was I dressed like a Tombliboo.

We had a similar situation last year when I bought a striped teeshirt and they called me Bagpuss for the whole summer.

DS22 told me last year that I need to stop wearing patterns as they make me look like an old lady! He then spent a day out shopping pointing out everyone who was wearing a pattern, saying “look see what mean, she looks like a granny’
my wardrobe is now completely plain colours, with no pattern (except stripes, apparently they are ok sometimes 🤣). I didn’t just throw out all my clothes, I’ve been losing lots of weight so replacing things.

Ah the joys! My dd is 11 but just looks at me and says

"Just no mother"

Times like this I'm glad she has three brothers. Mind you I showed my ds a patchwork coat and he said I looked like a Soviet grandmother in it.

Dd2 told me my skirt was giving shower curtain vibes 🙄. Still wearing it.

Caused Dd1 great embarrassment by looking at sparkly birkenstocks. Not even trying them on. Looking at them.

Same. 14 year old super model for a DD. Effortlessly looks stunning. Make up like a pro. She makes me feel like a drab old lady. I’m super proud though cos she’s cooler than I ever way. My idea of cool was a band T-shirt a high boots

Our stylish Deputy head frequently wears an outfit with strong Rupert the Bear vibes.

I came downstairs in a very ordinary grey hoodie and blue jeans and was instantly labelled as " generic Pixar mum"!

I had the following conversation with 11yo dd while looking through my wardrobe before a night out:

I think I’m going to wear this dress to go out tonight, what do you think?

‘I’m not sure, it doesn’t look like the sort of thing a millennial would wear’

But I’m not a millennial

‘Are you a gen Z?’

No, generation X

‘Is that older?’

Yes

‘Well, it still doesn’t look like something you wear in your twenties’

‘Oh yeah, okay then, you should wear it’

I showed my DS the dress I was going to wear for his graduation and he said it was ‘old lady’ - he conceded when I put it on!!

@PaperFlyingFucks sorry but we got it taken away as people were so desperate for a negative reaction that the laughing react was co-opted for that.

When Teddy Bear coats were in fashion I had a full length pink one that I loved loved loved!

Cant begin to tell you how much I loved it!

First time teenage daughter saw me in it she said “Why are you wearing a dressing gown?”

Then when teenage son saw it he said “Why are you dressed like a pimp?”

Still wore it though!

It’s sweet revenge though, I always remember walking into the bathroom when I was a teenager and seeing my mum in the bath and said “I hope my boobs don’t end up like that!” After breast feeding 4 kids you can guess they are much worse than hers ever were!

So I have no sympathy for myself!!

When I was in the trenches of three kids, a full time teaching job and a two hour commute my DD used to call me Smithy’s mum because I was always falling asleep! My style conscious DS told me that my smart new biker jacket made me look like a fat teenager.

Tbf I saw those trousers & was put off by the Tombliboo resemblance 😆
