My Children want to contribute but I never let them. Sometimes my mum pays

We take it in turns.

TorroFerney · 19/07/2026 13:01

I am the adult child (but a middle aged "child"). I pay every time, well my husband and I - joint account.

ShetlandishMum · 19/07/2026 13:01

We do with our +18yo children.
My parents do with their +18 yo children and grandchildren.

SqueakyFromme · 19/07/2026 13:02

We used to always pay for Mum

Deadringer · 19/07/2026 13:03

Working adult dc pay for themselves.

DollopOfFun · 19/07/2026 13:04

We always pay.

I appreciate that they offer every time, but I will never not pay.

Maddy70 · 19/07/2026 13:04

I've always paid for my adult children

cupfinalchaos · 19/07/2026 13:04

We always pay for our adult kids (5 between us) and also when we take them and partners on holiday.. not cheap!!

Teawithfrenchtoast · 19/07/2026 13:04

if I’m out with my parents, we usually split the bill. If I’m out with just my mum for a coffee/cake - she will usually insist of paying. If my DH and I are out with our DS (20yr old) then we usually pay however my DH can be a little put out at this and would prefer DS to at least offer to contribute.

fornobody · 19/07/2026 13:04

My parents have always paid for me and I will always pay for my children. Unless someone on either side is significantly struggling I would find the role reversal uncomfortable both ways

parachutegirl · 19/07/2026 13:05

We used to always pay until the last year or so since DH retired. They’ve all got good jobs and we take it in turns.

Deffoanon · 19/07/2026 13:05

This will depend on who is better off imo

Eg we pay when we go out with my dps who are on a state pension and things are tight. When I was a student etc they would.

My pil pay because they are in a better financial position (no mortgage with decent pensions not wildly different to what they earnt). Currently we are in a tighter spot than them because of mortgage, childcare etc.

My grand parents would ocassionally pay because it was important to them

It also depends on who does the asking, and the situation. Sometimes in somewhere like a garden center we will split it

Thinking about it we split it alot, sometimes fairly and sometimes unfairly. Eg split it in 2 when pils offer despite there being 4 of us and 2 of them

"My parents have always paid for me and I will always pay for my children" - this is how it works in my family too.

HoppingPavlova · 19/07/2026 13:06

We always pay. Our expectation is that when we retire, it swaps😁.

Laiste · 19/07/2026 13:07

If they are alone with us we pay. If they are with their husbands/fiancés then each couple pays separately.

Coralsunset · 19/07/2026 13:07

I always pay.

If it’s just coffee and cake sometimes DC will pay but mostly it’s me.

parachutegirl · 19/07/2026 13:08

Those of you that are insisting on always paying for fully functioning working adults - what’s the reasoning behind that?

We have supported ours through uni, bought their first car, helped with house deposit etc so we have certainly been financially helpful to them, but their incomes are now higher than ours so it’s fairer to share the bill.

Gardenisablooming · 19/07/2026 13:08

Adult dc include
1 who earns a fortune, pays their share and not a penny more
1 who has a baby and doesn't work -i pay for her .
1 who treats me if it's just us 2 as a thank you for 5 lifts from the station a week. Pays her share in a group but isn't a penny counter likely dc1 !!
2 who thrown in a few notes in because cba to add up their share!
Works well for all in our family .

MrsKeats · 19/07/2026 13:09

We always pay for the kids. We can afford it and they are just starting out in life.

AgnesMcDoo · 19/07/2026 13:09

I’m an adult child.

I always offer to pay. My dad usually insists on paying so I compromise and pay for the drinks.

GrumpyPanda · 19/07/2026 13:10

Adult child here and it's always been our parents paying since they're significantly better off than either of us sibs.

We don’t ‘insist’ and we still outearn them by a considerable amount. We had free university and they didn’t. We bought our first house for 34k and they didn’t. Shall I go on?

Some families do things differently to yours. It doesn’t affect you in any way shape or form so why the snark?

RedRosie · 19/07/2026 13:11

We always pay for meals with parents and most other relatives (apart from my brother who is very wealthy). We do this purely because we are better off than them. My elderly dad always offers, but we always pay. My adult stepchildren are now settled and better off, so we sometimes let them pay if they want to.

OwlCalledSage · 19/07/2026 13:11

Our are early 20s and both working in first and second jobs after uni. We always pay. Now girlfriends are included, we pay for them too. We’d not dream of sharing bills at this stage. We can afford it, we like to treat them.
