I am really struggling today.
I had a hysterectomy two years ago and it's made me very heat intolerant.
My family is getting on my nerves.
I am behind on all my stuff at home and work.

Today I spent an hour watching America's Next Top Model !😪

Lifeomars · 28/07/2026 15:21

It's hot and humid here today and we have an amber heat warning for tomorrow, on top of feeling drained from the heat i have pulled a muscle in my lower back and can barely walk. House is in a state as moving is very painful and even if I was able to get around and do stuff it would make me pour with sweat. I've been in tears today and had to have stern words with myself to stop wallowing in self pity. Keep telling myself it will all pass, the weather will cool down and my back will get better but its a struggle.

friedaklein · 28/07/2026 15:43

I am sweaty ten minutes after getting out of the shower. That's how hot the house is. Already had two showers today.
Hope your back gets better @Lifeomars

The heat is destroying my curtain hooks. They’re all becoming brittle and crumbling Confused

I keep getting notifications because I commented on this thread.

I am FUMING because back in Glasgow its business as usual, about 17 degrees and pissing it down! Just checked the live cams on YouTube for England beaches and can see your beautiful weather... puts on safety gear and waiting to be told to fuck off

Thesquaregiraffe · 28/07/2026 20:13

I just want to do what I need or want to do without having to consider how hot I’ll be doing it!

I want to do a deep clean on the bathroom. But frankly, that room is like a sweat box torture chamber. And on a personal level, to zone out for a while, I’d like to play on The Sims 4 but that means turning on the gaming laptop and that pumps out enough heat to fry an egg if it was next to the fan vents.

Please god! When will it end!?

just really needed to vent. Thank you!

I have commented before about the tone deaf and relentlessly cheery "we love the heatwave" on the local news and tonight they outdid themselves. Prior to the forecast with the amber health warning they did a vox pop and it was all positive, no mention of the health risks, the possibility of wild fires due to (amongst other things) the use of disposable bbqs, and the horrific drownings of people plunging into uncharted water to cool off. They showed four people, all of them keen on the heat and saying how fabulous it is, telling people to "get out there and enjoy it" and "I wish it would last til November" . It was so unbalanced and grating, or maybe I am just too cross due to the heat

I want a survey done on the type of homes the people who have been jumping into open water live in. Because i bet i can guess the outcome

EmeraldRoulette · 28/07/2026 20:29

@Thesquaregiraffe yeah I just want to do normal stuff

All my plans for the summer went completely, it's such a shame. I normally get loads done in the summer because I have really bad SAD in winter.... !

had a meeting today with a bunch of people who love it they are absolutely thriving and honestly they look really well. I don't ask people personal questions about where they live but I do think even the type of your accommodation can make a big difference.

btw politely suggest we ignore people who are just here to cause trouble.

I was intending to sit down and do a plan for how to cope with next summer - I always have a plan for summer because living in a flat like this there's normally a bunch of stuff that you have to do to mitigate the effects. This year I didn't do any of it because of some health related stuff that came up in March

Obviously, I regret that now but I'm only likely to be signed as done with it at the end of this week - so I'm not sure how much of an effort I want to make - oh it's a long boring story but you guys will all understand.

anyway, I'm not quite sure whether I want to make the plan or not because whatever anyone says if you look at the pattern of summer since 2018 which was also horrific... this is absolutely unprecedented.

I know somebody who really really hates summer and loves winter and she keeps telling me that the last few summers have been horrific. But they haven't. They haven't been anything like this. and surely I would remember - because I used to be on the tube all the time!

Yeah, that happened to me
I thought it was because I bought a cheap plastic rail

Then, after the cheap plastic rail actually fell down, I had it replaced with something else which was the wrong thing - I mean cosmetically it looks better but it doesn't work as well because it lets in wayntoo much light in summer

I don't know how I always manage
to get house stuff so horribly wrong.

One of the things I could try and sort out is proper blinds and yes, I do mean underneath the curtains - but they will probably take six weeks to get done made to Measure anyway so it seems a bit pointless. I should probably delay them until next year.

Really hoping some sort of miracle occurs and I don't have to live in this flat next year

I loathe those news reports which take this tone. And it’s especially moronic now when it’s obvious that far from being something to “enjoy”, this heat is a devastating result of climate change and a terrifying harbinger of what lies ahead. Cheerful comments about “getting out there and enjoy it” are utter rank stupidity imo. And yes, I agree with others on the thread - the people who make these comments tend not to be the people living in hot flats with no way of cooling themselves down.

MotherofPearl · 28/07/2026 21:01

And yes, I agree @EmeraldRoulette- best to ignore the trouble makers.

This is the worst - I started paying attention ten years ago when I moved in here. This has been the worst summer of my life for one reason or another. And this heat has put the vile lid on that.

Support to all of those suffering. This too shall pass.

ConstantlyFuriosa · 28/07/2026 21:06

“Really hoping some sort of miracle occurs and I don't have to live in this flat next year”

Me too, @EmeraldRoulette I’ve wanted to do a swap (mine is HA and you end up feeling trapped in a way you wouldn’t if it was a private let, because you’d be mad to give it up, yada, yada). At this point I’d probably panic swap for anything as long as it’s not east and west facing.

34 here tomorrow. Which means BOILING in the space I call ‘home’.

EmeraldRoulette · 28/07/2026 21:21

@ConstantlyFuriosa may I have some advice - as someone who is very oversensitive to weather!

you know these flats that only face one way? So single aspect I think?

I don't think you can face any direction - except maybe north - without having this problem. fundamentally some buildings just trap heat. I'm convinced that the newer ones are worse but I do see a lot of people complaining on social media and they've got similar temperatures to us in spite of living in houses that were built in the 40s, 50s and 60s. So you just don't really know.

I think the only way to mitigate is to have either balcony doors and windows that open fully or windows situated so that you get a cross breeze - this year that would have been very limited use because it's just hot air outside.

So if you get offered a swap, I would keep that in mind. It would be awful to go through all the hassle of moving for that reason.

we're also expecting 34 here tomorrow.

It actually angers me. I find it self absorbed and tone deaf considering the fires it’s causing, the ill health of many including myself and the food shortages to come.

the80sweregreat · 28/07/2026 21:36

The ‘ we love this weather ‘ people do tend to be rather smug. I doubt they see that the lack of rain is worrying or how it can affect people who
don’t like it, especially the humidity.

I promise you all Im not trying to cause trouble or be smug. I appreciate the issues being mentioned, just meant Im a bit annoyed our heatwave ended so quickly and yous dont even want it (again I understand). X

EmeraldRoulette · 28/07/2026 22:23

OMG. The heat and humidity has really built up in the last hour!

JenniferBooth · 28/07/2026 22:28

Found a way to make cooking bearable tonight Got in a cold bath and submerged while wearing a t shirt so that and my hair were sopping wet while cooking Needs must in the Sanctuary sweatbucket.

socks1107 · 28/07/2026 22:40

It’s very humid in the SE tonight. It’s given me horrible anxiety this evening ahead of a train and tube journey tmrw. I’ve enjoyed some of summer but this permanent increasing hot days is too much for me, ready for it to break

Oh, I certainly wouldn’t want a single aspect and I’d love a bungalow - I’ll never get a house swapped for a flat although if you didn’t actually live in this hellhole you wouldn’t suspect the heat unless you knew already about east/west facing.

It’s one of the reasons I’ve yet to swap, because I don’t want what anyone is offering so far. Luckily, I’m fairly central where I live so this has elements of a ‘des res’ - until you live here in summer!

I’ve said this before but ideally I’d love one of the ‘40 degrees is glorious’ crowd to actually swap with me. Then they’d soon change their bloody tune!

ConstantlyFuriosa · 28/07/2026 22:48

And I’m ‘fortunate’ to not be single alspect. Just a shame I get all of the morning sun in my bedroom and the full force of west facing in my living room, bathroom and kitchen. Ugh.

ConstantlyFuriosa · 28/07/2026 22:51

A you say @EmeraldRoulette at least you can get a cross breeze in the evening if there is one. But it’s like a regime I must have in the summer. Cool the place as much as possible until daybreak and then close everything up again. It’s just so tiring. The o the night I said sod it and didn’t stick to the routine. The next day was 30 degrees even though it had ‘only’ been about 26 that day. Got to stick to the regime or else.
