It’s funny how 1976 is held up as some amazing summer. I wonder if it was sunny but just not insanely hot. My Mum raves about it - though I guess they were in Yorkshire so it can’t have been crazy hot.

I think that 76 was unique because summer time was so rubbish pre this time.
I remember getting burnt on my shoulders.
This one is much hotter and more humid.

Fascinating - just asked Chat GBT - in Reading it rained on the bank holiday weekend 27th-28th August that year so MiL was right. Guess it didn’t rain on the same day for everyone.

My forecast said it’s going to be like this for at least another week. I feel like crying.

My kids broke up from school on Friday so now I’ll not only have to contend with this heat I’ll have to do it whilst trying to keep them entertained……and no doubt they’ll want to be out in the garden or going on trips to the park etc.

It’s hell.

Scared, can you take them out after midday around 4 or 5? I know it’s not easy with children who want to go out a lot, but a later start might help a bit. I am lucky I don’t have to entertain children, but it is hard if you don’t like the hot weather. Maybe swimming ? Or the library ( may have air con?)
Hopefully the weather may break by the time they start the six weeks

Like you I’m no Pollyanna. Grieving my late mother from April but she would probably be looking down relieved she’s not dealing with the world and the way it’s going.

I lost my dad to prostate cancer in October 2024. I miss him so much but he would really be suffering in this

Ive done 32 years in the Sanctuary sweatbucket. We used to have slidey up windows that got a breeze going through the flat In 2004 they changed them to the shit with the restrictors that we have now

If you can afford a few cinema trips that might be a good escape for a few hours? Dark and air conditioned: bliss.

Cinema is a good idea. I often lurk around the supermarkets for the air con. I’ve been known to sit in the car with it on for five minutes to cool down as well.

DH literally said that to me earlier. But he has also modded the aircon unit and scrubbed the paddling pool. So maybe I’ll keep him

I was 6 in 1976 and remember it fondly as a hot summer of just running around outside all day long with friends with no parents in sight. No one complained about the heat. It was just a glorious summer and everyone was happy. We were all a lot skinnier in those days so maybe that helped. No snacking no lunch just a bit of breakfast and a decent dinner. I suppose where we lived it was just houses no flats.

I’m so grateful for somewhere I can rant with like minded people.

Who the hell actually likes this weather?? Actually who!? It is a bit cooler here today as we’ve got an almost constant breeze but again, this afternoon and as the sun penetrates the back of my house it feels like I’m in the hottest greenhouse from hell!

AND! I’m now fed up with having the curtains closed for most of the day and the constant sodding drone of the air con and fans! It took three lots of paracetamol to get rid of the headache yesterday. Oh! And! No such thing as a cool shower here either as the cold water tank that feeds the shower is in the loft - whooop!! Hot shower it is then! Aarrrghhh!!!

I sat in an aircon Starbucks for 3 hrs today with one iced latte and my book. Not cos I am cheap, but because I can't face eating anything in this heat except yoghurt and icecream.

Much better in North Norfolk this morning, because I’m on the coast it was actually a bit chilly, with sea mist rolling in. We have a hosepipe ban, so watered baskets and tubs with watering can, very pleasant.

Spent afternoon and early evening in Norwich, was our Lord Mayor’s Procession, which is great fun. Temperature just crept up and up, humid and sticky by 7p.m. Home an hour later, temp at 19, but humid. I want rain, a lot of heavy, consistent rain to clear the air. Our local duck pond dried up, and the ducks have gone looking for a new pond, which is why I’m totally in favour for the current water ban,. But when we get the much longed for rain, we will get a flood warning. Happens every year.

19°? Can only dream of 19. It's been 30 in Cheshire again today.
