I’d have it like a shot and even considered installing it when I first moved in but this is an HA abode and therefore verboten. Plus I detest where I live anyway so want to do a swap. But I will most certainly not be swapping for another east/west-facing greenhouse!

Hopefully one of the types who frequently tell us how much they love this disgusting heat will jump at the chance to live in a sweatbox.

Proper installed air con is the cheapest to run as its the most efficient. Another reason why, despite the initial higher outlay, it works out better in the long run than portable units.

But even the portables don't cost a fortune imo. At max usage, so we're talking 7am to around 1am in 30+ weather, costs me approx £3 a day. That cools my living room and kitchen (semi open plan) and my bedroom, although they're not on at the same time. I don't mind paying it so I don't really scrimp on it but you could use it less for sure.

Re the portables. I’ve said before I have tilt and turn windows and they’re large ones so trying to figure out how to vent the hose has always put me off.

Dh measured the windows for an air con unit and our windows are the wrong sort , so it would be difficult to do easily.

Exactly. I did look it up before summer hit, actually, and all the solutions involved awkward DIY of some sort.

The one I just bought came with some kind of big mesh thing and something else in a bag, sorry its a bit vague! But I have sash windows so I just needed the kit for that, so I just flung the bag aside. I'll have a look tmrw and see what it actually is. They said they included stuff to fit "any" window (the sash windows stuff was also in there). So it might work for your windows.

That’s kind of you @DancingLions but my windows are seriously awkward. They’re floor to ceiling and open inwards like patio doors when not on tilt and turn. And I think I’d need to actually have the window setup semi permanent because otherwise such a ballache and one of the only things I like about this place is that come sundown, I can fling open all these massive windows and get a bit of real air.

So the windows that heat the place all day work in favour at night. As long as it cools down outside, that is.

Developers are banned from installing it - even in large blocks of flats. It's some Net Zero lunacy. They have to prove that everything else has been tried and failed - which is impossible until you've built the flats and then it's too late.

Ah right. Yeah that is awkward. The only other possibility then is what my mum did. In that she had someone round who actually cut a hole in the wall that fits the hose exactly and then has a sliding cover to go over it when not in use. But it is a bit of a drastic option!

Plus then with fiddling about with walls and stuff would need permission from the HA which will never happen. And cost. I think if I loved this place maybe I’d consider doing it on the sly but I loathe it, so not going to throw any more money at it. Hence trying lots of diy solutions like fan placement and space blankets!

The space blankets have been the best but even then I can’t put them on the living room windows because I’d blind the neighbours opposite. For anyone without that issue I’d say buy some. £5.99 for 3 from Amazon (even though I don’t like to line that wanker Bezos’ pockets any further. Bet he’s got superior air con, too.)

Same but I saw recently that someone had a window fabric thing from.amazon with velcro and also extensions

Same here. I’ve sat in a dark room with the fan blowing full on at me tonight and cried.
There doesn’t look to be an end in sight to this hell.

What’s making it worse tonight is that the heat and sweat has affected my hearing aids. My husband, two sons and one of their girlfriends are sitting outside chatting and having a lovely evening now it’s cooled down a bit, I can’t hear what they’re saying very well so I’m not able to join in the conversation and sitting outside at this time they can’t raise their voices so that I can hear, and they’re outside because it’s so bloody hot and uncomfortable inside.

Absolutely they do. If and when they ever do, though, I suspect people’s service charges will skyrocket even further to offset the cost.

Sorry to hear that re your hearing aids. Completely want to cry along with you, though. Obsessive checking of the forecast isn’t helping either. I keep hoping it will miraculously change to a sea of little rainy icons overnight,

Our house was only built last year and I’ve wondered why air con wasn’t fitted as a standard, at least in the main bedroom. It seemed strange to me since air con feels like it’s something every home will need if Summers are going to be like this. Solar panels were installed as a standard feature so in hot weather the renewable energy that they produce could go some way to running the air con.

The small portable air con unit I have only goes in one room because of the exhaust pipe (my bedroom) and because of the orientation of the house has actually struggled a bit. BUT I wouldn’t be without it either - it has made the intolerable heatwave into almost bearable and has been a god send.

But! I hate this weather so much I’m tempted to remortgage just to get properly installed air con.

Because yesterday here was 35 with an overnight low of 19, it didn’t get to cool at all last night (needs to go down to at least 14 or 15 for that). Then today was around 33 I think? My living room and kitchen were like a furnace. I have some minor relief now but I know if it doesn’t get down to an almost cold-feeling temp (enough to put on a cardi or something) then tomorrow will again be unbearable.

I’m struggling to breathe with the heat during daylight hours. It’s absolutely vile.

Just had a shower ready for bed. I wanted a cooler shower so put the shower to “cold” … the reality was a hot shower because the sodding cold water tank for the shower is in the loft!!

I hate this! Bring on October! (And the quicker the better!).

I have not RTFT and I apologise but I feel the need to say that I am here in solidarity with all the haters of the heatwave. I have three kids, one is neurodivergent and struggling massively in the heat and also currently three dogs rather than our usual two as we are looking after an extra one for a few weeks. I should add that I adore both dogs and children. Dogs are all morons who keep going into the sun and overheating. I have provided cold pads they refuse to go on. I have to keep putting them in the kids pool to cool down. The heat has turned me into a rage filled loon. I hate everyone and everything, it is just too hot and relentless. I’m just furious all the time. No end in sight. I’m in SE England 😩 want to move to northern Scotland asap.

Wow they’re banned from installing it? But I suppose it’s still allowed to install central heating?🤔

Wow I got the bedroom down to 26 overnight previously 30.

So I think opening the loft hatch definitely helped even if it did fall and smack my head, the ice pack was nice though 😄

I have ordered a third meaco fan due to be delivered tomorrow as I gave DD one as she is struggling in her flat.
