I agree that even though winter weather can be a bit biting, you can pop the heating on, wrap up in cosy clothes, and pop a fleece blanket over you, and get warm and snug in the house.

It's much more difficult to get cool in this type of weather. Indeed in this current weather/heatwave, it's impossible to get cool. DH and I do have a few fans.. We have two in the lounge one for me and one for him. Then one in the kitchen (which we only put on when we're in there.) Also one in the bedroom! And that does us to be honest.

I know some benefit hugely from air conditioning, but I won't bother getting an air conditioning unit anytime soon. I don't really want to spend my life sitting in the house in front of an air conditioning unit. I am going to go in my garden in about 10 minutes, and sit in the shade with my book. (Temperature is 27C, and it's due to be 35C this afternoon.) The Midlands is getting the hottest temperatures in the UK this week! It's going to be hotter than Portugal and Spain and Greece and Italy!

I do understand that some people benefit hugely from air conditioning units though, and feel better/are healthier because of them, so that's not a pop at people who have them (and sit in the house in front of them,) I just prefer to be in the garden...

It's been 28 degrees here all week so not as bad as some of you but I am not built for this.

It just makes me feel unwell. I slept well last night so I feel better today than I did yesterday.

There is cloud cover today so at least its not as blindingly bright, that's one less problem.

The rest of my family cope fine in this heat which makes it worse. They go about things as normal while I am a hiding sweating mess.

The garage is boiling. Probably should venture out and open the door today to let out some heat.

you are my spirit twin, I am starting to feel that my brain is begining to shut down as i can't form a coherant thought in my head! Got something out of the freezer and stood there with the door open and am sure i felt my head clear and felt normal for a few seconds

I did the cold water bottle thing last night. Dug out my hot water bottle, it' s one of those really long ones with a fleecy cover and a godsend in the winter. Wrestled the cover off in a sweaty rage and filled it with cold water. Helped for a while and I did manage a restless sleep which was better than being fully awake and drenched with sweat. Woke up this morning and touched the bottle, it felt faintly warm! the horror, the horror 😱

I’m pregnant and struggling and I’m in Northern Ireland where it’s only mid-high 20s. I honestly don’t know how people are coping with 30 plus on the mainland. I especially feel for pregnant and menopausal women, people with newborns and old people :(

I see what you're saying, but it's having air con that enables me to leave the house at all!

If I'm already hot, sweaty and miserable indoors, then the last place I want to go is outside where it's even hotter. I used to have lovely shade in my garden from a huge tree in the garden of the house that backs onto mine. The bastards have cut it down! I actually could have cried when I saw them doing it. All shade and privacy gone. I'm going to have to spend £££ now to try to rectify the effect of it. We're in London and to me, every tree is precious! But most of my neighbours have chopped them down and put down fake grass. It's so upsetting.

Anyway, with air con, I can keep my core temperature low which means I can then bear to go out here and there because it will take me longer to overheat. And knowing I have air con to come home to, helps me psychologically. There's also the fact that I sleep well because of it so I'm not knackered and depressed, which again doesn't put you in the frame of mind to want to go out anywhere.

Has anyone tried those fans that connect into the light bulbs?

Lol. I don't like the winter heating bill or more washing that takes ages to dry and can't go out on the line.😥

Both things can be true. Babies are born in hot countries all over the world. And the UK isn’t equipped to deal with temperatures like this and it’s understandable parents of newborns who can’t get their room temp below 30 are probably quite worried. But thanks for policing.

I don’t agree! I look bloody awful in any summer clothes and love my autumn/winter gear! I feel/look much more stylish! ( IMO of course😃)

I’m wearing a neck fan which works because it blows air so close to your face. My pedestal fans are doing nothing but blow hot air. I’m annoyed that DS is home from uni because I have to wear clothes and not sit around in my pants covered in a wet tea towel in front of a fan. Having to adapt to adapting to this heat is grim.

Yes and people live difficult lives in hot countries and do whatever they're able to to stay cool.

I don't like the bill either and barely have the heating on. I literally can't stand the feeling of heat around me.

My hearing is really muffled again. If its affected permanently due to this i will likely take legal advice
My door handles are hot So was the light switch when i turned it off last night.

Just remember not to use that bottle for hot water again! Freezing damages the rubber.

I was warned against those because there are electrical issues if you just plug it in yourself. I think you need a proper electrician to fit a ceiling fan

I am from a hot country where it can go up to 45 C.

There are ceiling fans, large windows, well ventilated houses and aircon everywhere including public transport, restaurants and hospitals. They can"t believe our Tube has no aircon.

The UK heat is way worse because no one is equipped.

Paracetamol before bed helps. It brings down body temperature.

I put a thermometer outside in the sun and it’s over 40 C. It only goes up to 40 C but as it came inside where it’s cooler it hit 40 so I knows it’s over 40 C outside and the thermometer is working. The temp reading is decreasing now it’s inside. I’m getting a better thermometer delivered today so I can play my new favourite game. Currently watching Wimbledon and pleased Fery is an excellent player to watch. Eating ice pops and trying not to move. I was compelled to get out of bed and eat half a tub of Haagen daz to cool down in the early hours.

Neck fans do work. I bought mine in May from Amazon and it works because it’s so close to your skin. Mines a Jisulife after I did a bit of research but I’m sure any one will do. John Lewis sell one.

As soon as portable air conditioning units are back in the shops I’m buying a decent one.

I don't think people realise how bad the tube is once the trains leave the tunnels. It's a cramped glass and metal tube getting baked in the sun. Some of the lines run for 30 minutes outside the tunnels.

Hot countries know that they will experience heat every year and their infrastructure and the way they manage things (e.g siestas) are part of life. The UK is/was a temperate climate with cool wet weather being a regular thing, i can remember many a summer being an absolute wash out so in that sense we are not prepared.
