Both of which were also mentioned on the 'worst towns and cities' thread Grin

😂 clearly I have poor taste!

Love London. Also like Stratford-upon-Avon.

Came on here to say Wells!

Favourite town: St Ives in Cornwall. I don't know how anyone could not like it.

Favourite city: Norwich. Canterbury is a close second, mainly for the beautiful cathedral.

@MaggieBsBoat I’m assuming the people pointing out Scottish and Welsh places are not British in which case it’s forgivable (I live somewhere where the UK is just England) but otherwise it’s really annoying (and for me changes the answer).
Nobody had said "Scottish and Welsh places are not British" when you posted. OP said "in England".
Scotland and Wales are in Britain.

ginasevern · 21/06/2026 13:02

I'm rather partial to my home town of Bristol. Otherwise I like Wells in Somerset and Berkeley in Glos. My other favourites are in Wales so don't qualify.

Slough.

OP asked What is the nicest town or city you have visited in England? @Loub1987 .

We used to have a holiday cottage in Slough. It's a great centre for visiting many places and very quick and easy on the train into London. Also local bus service to Heathrow. Black Park has the rare Purple Emperor butterfly... and the chocolate smell from the Mars factory...
As I have always lived on the coast in tourist areas I find industrial areas and towns fascinating.

Sheffield - more trees than any other city. Only city to have part of a national park in its boundaries - ie Peak District.

Friendlygingercat · 21/06/2026 13:08

Another vote for Harrogate although not been for many years. Also York and Salisbury.

Octavia64 · 21/06/2026 13:10

Cambridge.

not in August though as the throngs of language students are tricky to get past.

i personally love Newcastle especially Tynemouth

Soozikinzii · 21/06/2026 13:11

I havent visited Wells . But I visit York alot because my son and grandchildren live there . I love visiting . Never tire of it .

Sidebeforeself · 21/06/2026 13:11

Fave city- Leeds born and bred there
Fave town - Harrogate. Live there now

But! I’m voting with my heart. Manchester is a great city as much as it pains a Yorkshire woman. And I’ll always always love London.

SunshineYell · 21/06/2026 13:14

Ooh, yes Salisbury is beautiful! Sheffield otoh…. Should be on the ‘ worst’ thread, imo.

deste · 21/06/2026 13:14

Loved Sheer in Surrey.

somewhereintheworld · 21/06/2026 13:15

Another vote for Cambridge. Loved it ❤️

NigellaWannabe1 · 21/06/2026 13:17

I love Stamford.

NinjaCoffee · 21/06/2026 13:17

Ascot/Windsor area - gorgeous. Also love parts of London!

Spongblobsparepants · 21/06/2026 13:19

Lincoln is a lovely city and I go there often. I also really like Hull and think it’s really unfairly maligned. Both really friendly places.

Also really enjoyed trips to Liverpool and York….and Nottingham for the foodie scene and some great live music.

I love London though, and fantasise about buying a pier a terre there to enjoy in retirement. I’ve mostly lived rurally and crave a city fix, but I don’t think DH would ever countenance a move from our village.

Augustus40 · 21/06/2026 13:19

Parts of London then Norwich then Windsor.

Berkshire and Bucks generally do very nicely too.

ThereWillBeSigns · 21/06/2026 13:20

Stroud. I just really like it.

Sorry! I read it wrong as Britain but thank you for policing the responses.

Im not British so the nuance is somewhat less relevant to me.

Anyway, loving hearing about all the lovely places to visit in England!

TubeScreamer · 21/06/2026 13:22

HairyToity · 21/06/2026 13:23

Scotland and Wales are in Britain.

Exactly!!! OP says England. There are numerous none-England cities mentioned on this thread.

my comment is saying optimistically that the people mentioning these places are not British and therefore don’t realise that the places they are mentioning are not IN ENGLAND! If they are British then it is a bloody shame!

Liquorandvinegar · 21/06/2026 13:30

Cities - London, Liverpool and Norwich
Towns - Stamford, Wells, Henley on Thames and Tenterden
Coast - Broadstairs, Wells next the sea, Whitby and Marazion
