I haven't read every single post and agree with so many. I don't know if anyone has mentioned Carlisle yet. We had a brilliant weekend break there a few years ago. It got off to a fantastic start by the journey there on the beautiful Settle-Carlisle railway in bright sunshine.

In Scotland we enjoyed our visit to Stirling last year.

Other towns I like - Frome, Bradford on Avon, Wells-Next-the-Sea, Alnmouth, Morpeth.

I’m exceptionally fond of Wales, Aberystwyth is beautiful and Cardigan.

Oxford would be nice without the tourists, it’s too small to handle them.

The architecture in Bradford city centre is incredible, the Waterstones bookshop in the old wool exchange is probably the most beautiful bookshop in the world. My DD(10) and I jump on the train to head to the amazing fountains in Centenary Square on a hot summer’s day.

Thank you for being so positive about Bradford. I grew up there and it was absolutely smashed to pieces on the other thread which was gutting. It does have lots of amazing architecture and you’re spot on about the Waterstones, it’s the best in the country.

Is Bombay Stores still there? That’s a brilliant place too.

Yes, it is. My kids are enthralled by it.

I'm glad someone has started this thread - I'd love recommendations for nice towns that still feel occupied and welcoming.
I'd go with
Holt in Norfolk (posh but nice)
Bath when it's not busy
Knaresborough
Truro
Stratford on Avon out of season
Warwick
Welshpool

Re Holt, we're devatated that Byfords no longer have the deli, it's apparently now a bar for the hotel guests. Where can I get my chocolate fridge slices now, obviously asked on behalf og my grandchildren!

This thread's intersting because of the number of places cropping up on both the worst and best places, just proof that beauty is in the eye of the beholder!

Ha ha, me too, Stroud is soo off kilter feeling, eek.

Me too re Stroud

AndrewMountbattenWindsor · 22/06/2026 11:20

... Slough. It's a great centre for visiting many places and very quick and easy on the train into London. Also local bus service to Heathrow. Black Park has the rare Purple Emperor butterfly... and the chocolate smell from the Mars factory...

Slough is a borough and many of the villages are pretty. Slough itself is not but it has good transport links and it's only about 2.5 miles from Windsor and Eton. The parks in Slough are good.

Slough.
...oh no! Wait a minute. Not Slough, I meant Aldermaston. You know, where they make bombs.

Slough. Reminds me of the poem by Sir John Betjeman.

I went there once. He wasn't wrong.😂

Edited to add: LOL, just noticed your username!

St Andrews, st Ives, Inverness

You’re the second person to say Inverness I know it well I must be seriously missing something! It just a boring small city with bloody awful traffic.

igelkott2026 · 21/06/2026 17:43

I'm always surprised so many people love St Andrews. Ruins and a golf course. So many other better places in Scotland to love!

Stunning blue flag beaches , amazing history, lovely parks, good restaurants and shops, proximity to Edinburgh … lots to like.

Tigerbalmshark · 22/06/2026 22:13

Depends whether it’s to live or visit. I could definitely imagine retiring in Harrogate, Winchester or Canterbury (I’m at an age where you think about that sort of thing). Or Glasgow if we are doing the whole of the UK. Plenty of others I’ve loved visiting but wouldn’t want to live in permanently (I already live in London so I’m not including it).

I love Bath and Edinburgh, but London is one of the best cities in the world.

Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland, not in England.

Did you mean England, or the UK? The very first post was about Wales 🤦‍♀️

Seconded. Staithes is also the location of the best fudge shop on the planet. 😋

And Runswick Bay. Like walking through a fairy story. It's beautiful.

Error404BrainNotFound · 22/06/2026 23:06

The Mumbles near Swansea

Greentea4 · 22/06/2026 23:13

I love Norwich. Got everything..

England, not Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland - which makes up the United Kingdom with England. I'm aware of what the Uk and England are and the difference

The very first post mentioned Birmingham, which I think has a lot to offer and around that area, there are other posts listing great places then a random Welsh or Scottish place popped in, not sure whether they don't know or aren't aware - probably best to just ignore

@MikeRafone I think people are just being rebellious which makes it fun!! I commented on a post liking Verona!!!

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 23/06/2026 07:56

I put Perth. Sorry. I got a bit carried away.

Myblueclematis · 23/06/2026 08:00

Not recently, but Arundel and Lymington were two nice towns that I remember visiting.

I also like the next town along to me where I was brought up, really annoys me when people slag it off, it does have some really nice aspects to it but just because the town centre is really awful now, they can't seem to see past that.
