Not a town or city but I went to Port Meirion in Wales (where some of the TV show The Prisoner was filmed). It was amazing, I loved it.

Favourite UK city I have lived in was actually Birmingham. It was diverse, vibrant, good fun. Really enjoyed it!

Nicetosn · 21/06/2026 11:16

My town. Littlehampton. Medium sized, nice beach train links to Brighton and London

PermanentTemporary · 21/06/2026 11:16

So many! Really hard to pick one so I’ll go with my heart and say London.

SpottyPyjama · 21/06/2026 11:16

I love Bath and Edinburgh, but London is one of the best cities in the world.

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 21/06/2026 11:20

London is my favourite. I left a few years ago and wish I hadn't.
Harrogate
York
Perth is very nice
Matlock
Scarborough.

Cheltenham
Bath
Leamington Spa
Exeter and Penzance aren't exciting but great bases for beautiful countryside and both have lovely outdoor pools (Jubilee in Penzance and Exeter has uni outdoor pool plus one in Topsham)
Portishead
Topsham
Caerleon
Chichester
Cambridge
London
Wimborne Minster
Winchester
Newcastle and you can get the metro train to the beach (think it is Tynemouth)
Leeds
Hebden Bridge

We were in Kent last week and visited Canterbury. I’d like to go again.

dottiedodah · 21/06/2026 11:47

Bridport is very nice .

Just posted this on the other thread but Berkhamsted.

Harrogate

ABitFab · 21/06/2026 11:55

Amersham

Butteredtoast55 · 21/06/2026 11:57

I'm glad someone has started this thread - I'd love recommendations for nice towns that still feel occupied and welcoming.
I'd go with
Holt in Norfolk (posh but nice)
Bath when it's not busy
Knaresborough
Truro
Stratford on Avon out of season
Warwick
Welshpool

I may be biased because I was born there but London is the best city I've been to in the world. Better than NY, better than San Francisco, Paris, Rome, Amsterdam ( amazing though they are) just for the sheer variety of incredible things there. I live elsewhere now and, if anything, without the stress of actually having to live there I love it even more, and visit more, as £1000 a month on a mortgage buys a lot of train tickets!

Canterbury is lovely

Ibi · 21/06/2026 12:02

London

Teado · 21/06/2026 12:05

The OP has requested English places, so Edinburgh, Portmeirion etc don’t fit the bill.

Id say Harrogate. Went there recently.

igelkott2026 · 21/06/2026 12:08

I thin York is the top of the tree easily but Chester, Winchester, Canterbury and Salisbury are all great too.

Lincoln was a revelation for me.

Desperatelyseekinglazysusan · 21/06/2026 12:01

Canterbury is lovely

Yes, Kent is generally underrated - so many pretty villages and small towns as well as Canterbury and Tunbridge Wells.

igelkott2026 · 21/06/2026 12:08

Another one for me is Cirencester - and also vaguely in that part of the world, Worcester. There's a bit of a "cester" theme with most of my choices ;)

whiteroseredrose · 21/06/2026 12:10

Agree Wells is a little gem.
Bath is lovely as is Hay on Wye.

Ihateboris · 21/06/2026 12:11

Chester is beautiful but I'm biased

itsallgoodinthehood · 21/06/2026 12:11

Windsor

peppermintteadrinker · 21/06/2026 12:12

Too hard to choose really

Town .... Lichfield (or is it a city?), Ludlow, Knaresborough, shout out for Steyning in Sussex, Alnwick, Lyme Regis, Beaumaris, tons in Wales tbh...Solva is more a village I think

City.... Newcastle, Durham, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Birmingham, London, York, St David's, Dundee, all got loads going for them and a soft spot for Brighton and Hove.

Britain is a wonderful place really despite the gloom. We have some beautiful towns and cities. It's also how you feel when you're there and what memories they bring back. All the above have happy memories for me.

Zanatdy · 21/06/2026 12:12

Wallingford Oxfordshire
