What is the nicest town or city you have visited in England?

I'll go first

Wells

As a non Brit, I have visited England and went wow, and sighed with great pleasure. You lot really have some gorgeous cities, towns and villages. How well preserved your heritage is is amazing, those lovely old churches, thatched cottages in a row, village greens, duck ponds and so on. Fabulous and the likes are not to be seen anywhere else. You should all be very proud.

I know there are blackspots, and things are not that great at the moment, but you have an awful lot to be thankful and proud about.

My wow places,

Chester
York
Lincoln
Lichfield
Harrogate
Bath
Cambridge
Oxford (and the villages around)
Cotswold villages

I'm sure I've left out some but those are the highlights I remember.

Reposting for those I offended by not reading or processing the thread title accurately.

I am English but would always refer to myself as British. Apologies.

Too hard to choose really

Towns ... Lichfield (or is it a city?), Ludlow, Knaresborough, shout out for Steyning in Sussex, Alnwick, Lyme Regis, Beaumaris, tons in Wales tbh...Solva is more a village I think

City.... Newcastle, Durham, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Birmingham, London, York, St David's, Dundee, all got loads going for them and a soft spot for Brighton and Hove.

Britain England is a wonderful place really despite the gloom. We have some beautiful towns and cities, (as do Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland). It's also how you feel when you're there and what memories they bring back. All the above (including those crossed out) have happy memories for me.

Better? 🙃

Lincoln
Hull old town and waterside area

I enjoyed Hull round there too. Some lovely cafés and museums.

Nice to see some love for places that get bad press.

I want to see what they've been doing up in Bishop Auckland and in Stockton. It's my home county but don't get there so much these days. Nice to see things happening.

HurdyGurdy19 · 21/06/2026 14:23

Lincoln.

Although I did think I was going to die before I reached the top of the very aptly named Steep Hill 😂

Whosthetabbynow · 21/06/2026 14:24

London. Brighton ❤️❤️

Sheffield - more trees than any other city. Only city to have part of a national park in its boundaries - ie Peak District.

London is the world’s first National Park City

Welcome to London National Park City

London National Park City is the long-term grassroots movement for everyone making our city greener, healthier and wilder.

I really must visit one day .... Lincoln and Bath .. never managed it yet. 🙈

MrFluffyDogIsMyBestFriend · 21/06/2026 14:35

Bakewell
Grasmere
Bury St Edmunds
Ely
Old Hunstanton (but I'll always have a soft spot for the less posh Hunstanton).
Kenilworth
Cambridge

Part of other cities. Someone's mentioned Lincoln and the bit by the cathedral is wonderful but the rest of it is so grotty it totally spoils it.

Probably lots of other places mentioned but I've not been recently and can't quite remember.

Mysterian · 21/06/2026 14:38

Matlock, Chester, St Albans.

Not English but Edinburgh and Llandudno.

SideboobToYouToo · 21/06/2026 14:39

My home city, Durham completely underrated.

leporello · 21/06/2026 14:42

Bradford-on-Avon

My home city, Durham completely underrated.

I've always fancied visiting it. So many places in the North East are underrated.

How incredibly rude!

It's pretty rude to say it's not relevant to you that Scotland and Wales are not in England.

If I said that Utrecht was in Holland and was corrected, I wouldn't say it wasn't particularly relevant to me.

Absolutely stunning cathedral and walks by the river, the Durham dales are great too.

Not a town or city but I went to Port Meirion in Wales (where some of the TV show The Prisoner was filmed). It was amazing, I loved it.

Favourite UK city I have lived in was actually Birmingham. It was diverse, vibrant, good fun. Really enjoyed it!

Great but it's not in England

GellerYeller · 21/06/2026 15:12

Cambridge, as a PP said; historic and vibrant.
York- doesn’t feel like a city- I recommend not going in high summer or when the Christmas market is on.
Machester and Liverpool. Loads of cultural attractions. The Rylands Library in Manchester is brilliant and Liverpool has the Tate.
Anywhere in The Cotswolds. So pretty and feels like what Hollywood thinks the UK is. Busy though.
Another vote for Hull. Loads of interesting history and pretty areas, Awful shopping centre though.

Teado · 21/06/2026 12:05

The OP has requested English places, so Edinburgh, Portmeirion etc don’t fit the bill.

Id say Harrogate. Went there recently.

my favourite is Manchester. All day long

Im not sure why posters are confused. I live in a place mentioned, and am stunned to hear I'm now in England.

AlcoholicAntibiotic · 21/06/2026 12:13

Wasn’t that keen on York last time I went (too many stag and hen parties) but I agree with the others on your list.

Lincoln is probably the most underrated city I’ve ever been to.

Outside of England, I really liked Belfast and - possibly bizarrely - Dundee.

Love this! I live in Belfast and went to uni in Dundee - both great cities IMO ❤️

I really liked Durham when I visited, it was beautiful.

anniegun · 21/06/2026 15:17

Stamford is a very pretty town and a nice compact size

olivepicanto · 21/06/2026 15:19

Nicetosn · 21/06/2026 13:34

I imagine the op probably meant the uk and it’s not that deep. An offshoot of the “what’s the worst place in the uk” thread where loads of Scottish and Welsh places were mentioned

Maybe not thaf "deep" but it's either arrogant or ignorant to answer a question that the OP didn't ask.

I've got "big feelings " about being called English when I'm not

its offensive, rude and downright ignorant

Lichfield is a city, albeit a very small one. Its gorgeous

pigalow27 · 21/06/2026 15:28

Shout out to the delightful Bury St Edmunds
