I was in Cambridge recently and loved it. Spectacularly gorgeous on the backs, and the stunning architecture of the colleges. It was lovely to see a buzzing thriving town centre, and of course so much to do. I’d definitely return.

I thin York is the top of the tree easily but Chester, Winchester, Canterbury and Salisbury are all great too.

Lincoln was a revelation for me.

Wasn’t that keen on York last time I went (too many stag and hen parties) but I agree with the others on your list.

Lincoln is probably the most underrated city I’ve ever been to.

Outside of England, I really liked Belfast and - possibly bizarrely - Dundee.

Has to be Cambridge.
At night, when I can't sleep, I imagine cycling from my college then across the meadows to Granchester. It's my happy place, for so many reasons.
Also love Bath and Harrogate. In my dreams, I live in a beautiful house on the Royal Crescent.

Phineyj · 21/06/2026 12:19

Inverness is beautiful. What a location!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 21/06/2026 12:19

York
I am lucky enough to work there once or twice a fortnight.

Flinderskleepers · 21/06/2026 12:25

Witney, Tetbury, Cirencester, Cheltenham, Totnes, Haworth

Silverbirchleaf · 21/06/2026 12:28

Whistable is a favourite of ours, or to be more precise, Tankerton.

SunshineYell · 21/06/2026 12:28

Absolutely love Bath, Winchester, York! Edinburgh too, is gorgeous. Lincoln is somewhere I could imagine living, actually.
I used to love London but it’s way too crowded for me nowadays.

Dilemma999 · 21/06/2026 12:29

Totnes has a nice ‘feel’ although I’m not sure what it would be like in winter.
Lewes is great, small, loads going on for a small place, outdoor pool, the Downs and sea not far away at Eastbourne and Brighton.
London of course.
Kent is lively - some very pretty villages and loads to see and do. Shame it’s Reform territory!

Lichfield

Beautiful city with a lot of special memories for me.

IlikebigboatsandIcannotlie · 21/06/2026 12:31

Good question!

I like - Bath, Durham, Oxford, Ilkley, York, Edinburgh, Leeds, Knaresborough, Ripon, Weymouth, Canterbury, Stratford upon Avon, Falmouth ...
I am sure there are more but those all come to mind!!

DysonHoover · 21/06/2026 12:32

So many people have said Cambridge but imo Norwich is far superior. Cambridge always feels a bit soulless and up it's own arse. Norwich is far more vibrant

Iamnofool · 21/06/2026 12:40

town - Beverley, Yorkshire
city- Norwich

6ate9 · 21/06/2026 12:42

Great Malvern

MaggieBsBoat · 21/06/2026 12:46

I’m assuming the people pointing out Scottish and Welsh places are not British in which case it’s forgivable (I live somewhere where the UK is just England) but otherwise it’s really annoying (and for me changes the answer).

But it has to be London. I’ve lived all over and London is one of the greatest places in the world.

Not a town or city but I went to Port Meirion in Wales (where some of the TV show The Prisoner was filmed). It was amazing, I loved it.

Favourite UK city I have lived in was actually Birmingham. It was diverse, vibrant, good fun. Really enjoyed it!

Both of which were also mentioned on the 'worst towns and cities' thread Grin

Frequency · 21/06/2026 12:49

Bowness-on-Windermere, quaint buildings, surrounded by beautiful countryside and lakes, and very friendly locals.

And they love dogs.

Strictly1 · 21/06/2026 12:50

York
lincoln

TeenLifeMum · 21/06/2026 12:52

I love Weymouth.

City-wise I love London and Bath. Birmingham and Manchester are fab to visit but I’d love to retire to Bath, especially if I were a widow. Retirement in a village is my idea of hell.

I lived in Birmingham for a year and really liked it too. I was living in Acocks Green, very near the train station.

Friendlygingercat · 21/06/2026 12:54

I love London and used to visit the antique markets and book shops regularly. I also love Bath - best visited in spring and autumn rather than the main tourist season.
