I've got "big feelings " about being called English when I'm not

its offensive, rude and downright ignorant

Okay, genuinely sorry that your feelings were hurt. I liked Port Meirion (in my opinion it is beautiful and the people I met there were wonderful) and I misread the OP. I did not mean to make a comment on nationalism etc. I do appreciate it was not the country being asked about.

Everyone can now go back to waving their flags or whatever else keeps them busy, fulfilled and happy.

It's a shame that the choice is limited to England, because some of the best places I've visited have been in the other home nations.
Anyway, I really like Warwick, York and Leicester.

There's no need for the last sentence

you could have just left it at the apology.

I love Wallingford too! If anyone wants to visit there is a good bus service from Reading / Oxford (as no train)

Lovely places.

I love Bath and York, I found myself in Leamington Spa for work the other month and that seemed like a nice town too would like to visit it properly.

The title asked for towns or cities in England. Why then do posters keep referring to Edinburgh, Glasgow and Perth which are Scottish cities?

If the OP had intended to ask about towns and cities in the UK as a whole, then she would presumably have said so.

Crunched · 21/06/2026 15:53

Coventry has some wonderful architecture and really friendly locals. It has probably been the place I was most pleasantly surprised by.

You’ll find that the Scots who are horrified at the ever present threat of Scottish independence and the breakdown of the U.K., will be particularly concerned about the U.K. being referred to as England as it just noises up the Nationalists. 😁

Nicetosn · 21/06/2026 15:59

olivepicanto · 21/06/2026 15:19

Maybe not thaf "deep" but it's either arrogant or ignorant to answer a question that the OP didn't ask.

There’s another active thread about the worst place you’ve been in the uk, this is clearly just a positive version of that and the op slipped up in the title. I don’t think it’s that deep if people want to comment Edinburgh or whatever

Fair enough! But I really just misread the title. Again sorry. I don’t think Scotland, NI or Wales are part of England! I live in Britain and appreciate the differences. I really didn’t mean to cause any hurt feelings. I appreciate for some people this is an important issue.

And for what it’s worth Port Meirion in Wales is absolutely beautiful as are many places in England.

Esperanza25 · 21/06/2026 16:00

And another vote for Cambridge. So beautiful and just the right size. Nothing but happy memories of living there ❤️

@olivepicanto, It's not a town or city either. The thread title is What is the nicest town or city you have visited in England?

Portmeirion Village | Holiday Resort North Wales

There's no need for the last sentence
you could have just left it at the apology.
@Loub1987 does it in most of her posts.
It's not an apology when it's followed by a passive-aggressive comment.

Blueeyedmale · 21/06/2026 16:02

My top 3
1 London no place like it in the world,so many Londoners take it for granted, but definitely one of the best cities in the world.

2 bath love the many beautiful buildings, friendly and really laid back atmosphere.

3 Lymington beautiful place and it's days like this you can just get in the car take a nice drive in the new forest or park up,take a stroll and watch the amazing wildlife roaming free.

Well, we'll just have to agree to
differ. I'm sure the OP knows the difference

Edinburgh isn't in England. That's fact. It's not about being "deep". It's about having a bit of respect.

I may be biased because I was born there but London is the best city I've been to in the world. Better than NY, better than San Francisco, Paris, Rome, Amsterdam ( amazing though they are) just for the sheer variety of incredible things there. I live elsewhere now and, if anything, without the stress of actually having to live there I love it even more, and visit more, as £1000 a month on a mortgage buys a lot of train tickets!

this!
