How is Ariana Grande allowed to keep going?

She looks like she’s at death’s door with anorexia and yet she’s just kicked off a world tour.

I thought we were living in more enlightened times now and that celebrities’ ill health wouldn’t be enabled like this. If she went to any hospital she’d get admitted for malnutrition.

How can you or I know whether her life is at risk? She looks very thin, that's all.

There's thin, and there's emaciated.

Because being that underweight and about to do a strenuous tour is life threatening.

In America they can. Remember the restrictions on Brittany Spears

That wasn’t restriction, that was removal of her right to freedom by putting her under a conservatorship. And her conservatorship sent her on tour to make money, so it didn’t help her

AG clearly has anorexia. But a conservatorship doesn’t address that problem. It doesn’t even relate to it.

Anorexia leads to organ failure. Ariana Grande isn’t usually this skinny.

Perhaps you are a doctor specialising in anorexia. I'm not.

She is clearly dangerously underweight. Would you also claim that Nikki Grahame was not necessarily unhealthy before she died? Or that you needed to be medically trained to know there was an issue with her?

ArcticBells · Yesterday 19:10

I hope she gets the help she needs. She’s such a lovely person and hugely talented.

You can tell because it’s obvious

People have been saying Eugenia cooney is going to die immediately for 10 years.

the reality is the public just don’t know.

there are plenty of recovered anorexics who have said they would’ve loved the conversation around them that AG is getting, and that it would’ve fuelled their disorder further

People who die of eating disorders usually do so after quite a long time. Some keep going for a really long time. I’m sure if EC doesn’t get help she will die at some point.

Yes, my relative has anorexia (recovering), but she didn't do a world tour at her sickest.

I got a knot in my stomach. If they let her perform this way, they are liable IMHO, exploiting vulnerable artists for financial gain, how these people sleep at night I'll never know.

If who let her perform? There's no gun to her head, so to speak, to perform, she can cancel if she wants. She has full agency.

It’s another Karen Carpenter situation (except Karen was significantly more talented).

Just bearing in mind the nature of this thread and the likelihood that AG is affected by a mental health issue was your in parenthesis addition completely necessary? I know she won’t be reading mumsnet but still.

I'm not claiming anything. If Ariana Grande is seriously ill then hopefully someone will raise a concern with social services and sectioning her is a possibility. But her family and friends can't make it happen.

NameChangeMay2026 · Yesterday 19:17

I just Googled and a photo of her doing her show opener came up. I agree the photo is too distressing to post.

That poor sweetheart. 😢 She's clearly extremely ill, and it's worrying because anorexia is very dangerous.

If she won't admit herself to treatment, then I suppose the only way would be for a family member to get her committed, but I can only imagine the legal obstacles to that.

If she doesn't want help, I don't think she can be forced.

It really is tragic.

Namechangefordaughterevasion · Yesterday 19:17

There's a massive difference between weight loss from jabs and an ED.

My eldest child suffered from anorexia from age 19-22. She's in her thirties now and (PG) seems fully recovered. I can hardly glance at photos of AG because it brings back painful memories of my lovely girl starving herself to death.

AG is an adult and no-one can stop her doing what she chooses but its heartbreakingly sad that this beautiful, talented young woman is being touted as one of life's success stories while she is obviously very ill indeed.

Yes so AG might last quite a long time too 🤨

we’ll feel a bit daft promising she is absolutely going to die right now in 10 years time when she’s still going.

FlatWhiteExtraHot · Yesterday 19:19

That photo posted upthread is very different to the ones posted on AG’s instagram. One wonders which one has been digitally altered.

Even if she doesn't die, being that weight causes tremendous strain on your heart and other organs.

I was less emaciated than her and was threatened with a hospital stay and told to not even go for a walk.

It is sad that she is so ill so publicly.

CheerfulYank · Yesterday 19:22

Given that only a few years ago she looked like this, it is shocking. But I don’t know what can actually be done about it unless they involuntarily commit her, and that’s unlikely due to the amount of money being thrown around.

It’s very sad. So strangers stating she’ll die soon is choosing to focus on drama rather than the sadness of performing when poorly.

Family. Management. Record company. Her doctors. Friends. Even the bloody insurance company for this tour should have a vested interest in making sure she’s healthy.

basically anyone with a personal connection to her or who is currently making money off her.

she looks like she’s at the level of needing an involuntary hold for anorexia to me.

None of these people automatically have the right to "stop her". In fact, the management and record company would probably be breaking Equality legislation to do so. Obviously if she is asking to be allowed to cancel and go for help and they were persuading her to go on, that would probably illegal, but you have to go through a fairly rigorous process of mental health assessments and then be declared to need serious in patient psychiatric care, before you are deemed legally unable to make your own decisions and people can stop you doing things.

GellerYeller · Yesterday 19:23

Her mum appears to be on tour with her, or at least, has been at her opening dates.

She looks lovely here but AGs eating disorder is very well established over decades. Like many people she has periods of recovery and periods where she falls back into the depths.

Ophy83 · Yesterday 19:26

I love her music.

I have also attended (in a professional capacity) an inquest of a 30-year old who died from anorexia with a bmi of 12... the photos look similar. Anything below 14 is extremely dangerous.

I agree that her management company owe her a duty of care which should include requiring a healthy BMI before doing something as strenuous as a global tour (above 18).

TheBlueKoala · Yesterday 19:26

Just happy I don't have daughters. I think pictures of AG should be banned because they are clearly pro Ana content.
