Defence and why it doesn’t matter seems to be the latest mantra, though it’s always been lurking just below the surface.

"Go further" = raise taxes even further.

That is to say interesting the choice of not yet appointing one. At least not as of 7pm.

I’d hoped that go further was a reference to telling his driver to keep driving as he approached Downing Street.

Seems though that Starmer doing his best, and I have to admit he is truly gifted in this respect, limpet impression.

You never know - the political currency ed balls view was reeves and treasury shouldn’t have let it get this adversarial - essentially team healey and Starmer is finished.

is it too much to hope Reeves and Starmer are putting the finishing touches to resignation speeches? Probably a bit longer…

Osborne otoh is of the firm view that the spending crisis is so bad that whoever comes in is inheriting hell and can’t commit much more on defence…

Thanks, seems plausible. Starmer committed to the strategic defence review (which he requested) publicly, both here and abroad. His reputation for being a good international statesman is now in tatters. He was lying to us, and our allies.

Yeh it fits. This is still on Starmer. He’s an absolutely terrible PM. His chancellor is on the edge of mental distress and he’s lost grip of his government.

Darren Jones and Dan Jarvis names being floated. Do you think Jones is stupid enough to say yes to that?

He might, he has been loyal to Starmer, prepared to follow the party line to his own detriment ( pocket money) and he's ambitious enough to fall upwards without any regard for his capability.
