A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

A former colleague of DH’s, they went through IOT at Cranwell together 25-odd years ago, is a newly minted Labour MP. Can’t for the life of me remember his name, but wonder if he fancies a promotion 😜

Though like many of you say, it’s unlikely any ex-military will touch the job now.

What is going on in regard to yet another delay on the DIP is fast becoming a national disgrace. Make no mistake jobs and skills are at risk.

John Healey’s resignation letter has laid bare the utter chaos at the heart of government on this issue. Defending the UK and investing in our defence industry simply can’t be done on the cheap. British defence needs investment. Failure to protect UK defence jobs would be a national betrayal.

Could almost be part of a Telegraph (or pretty much any newpaper) editorial. But actually its a quote from a union leader - Sharon Graham of all people.

boys3 · Yesterday 17:02

I also sense that Milliband's (Ed) fingerprints are all over this as well. Doubt he is sorry to see John Healey's departure from the cabinet.

I can see why there has not yet been an announcement as to the new Defence Sec - ultimate poison chalice.

How's this for a wildcard (though I think another pp upthread has already mentioned this - Rayner? Difference is she might actually be a serious consideration in the empty recesses that pass for Starmer's mind. Shows the depth of the mire he (and by extension us and the rest of the country) is in.

This is a government in chaos, unable to govern, with no leadership, under a caretaker prime minister who’s expected to be replaced within weeks … Britain deserves better. We need a clear plan to stand on our own two feet, to show global leadership, and to make this country resilient in a changing world. Starmer does not have that plan.

Not sure Zack does either. Though his words suggest a complete re-write of Green Party defence policy. Suggest no one holds their breath waiting for that.

Didn't someone say our drones could last for two days in an attack ?
And our subs that protect against putins subs are not fit for purpose.

AlternativeView · Yesterday 17:09

Without a shadow of a doubt that billion pound package for red ed needs stopping immediately.

Upstartled · Yesterday 17:10

Rayner? I'll cross my fingers and hope you are wrong. Her stint in housing shows she's all talk and no plan.

boys3 · Yesterday 17:20

Very true @Upstartled.

another scenario of dread though.

Steve Reed, one of the final Starmer loyalists, could be moved, probably willingly, to Defence and Ange comes back to Housing to replace Reed.

I was thinking that. Reed will defend ANYTHING so he's perfect. Then Ange could whip off her camouflage print dry robe, and pick up where she left off. We've cracked it @boys3 😂

How scary is it that this could actually happen? 😬

Blimey, this by election and the collapse of Labour is bringing out the mean-girl streak in some posters.

Not long till bollard has to sling his hook and then they'll be pretending they wanted Burnham all along, and whichever of his opposing opinions he is floating that day.

boys3 · Yesterday 17:48

I really hope though that we haven’t cracked it @Nuthatch26 ☹️ but I fear there is a half-decent chance that we have.

Then again maybe Starmer will announce this evening that he’s standing down as PM with immediate effect. Always an optimist me.

But, and it’s a big one, although that would be very welcome I shudder to think who might become caretaker PM.

I said essentially that on another thread and was accused of being insulting. 🙄

According to this article (and I heard Rory Stewart reference the exercise a few weeks ago), NATO countries are woefully unprepared for drone warfare.

These Ukrainian drone pilots took out NATO forces during drills

At NATO's Aurora 2026 military exercises in Sweden, a group of Ukrainian drone pilots was tasked with playing the role of attackers. The Kyiv Independent's Francis Farrell spoke with drone pilots from Ukraine's 20th National Guard "Lubart" Brigade, pa...

Starmer's letter to Healey. Absolutely deluded!
I will always do what is needed to keep our country safe. I thank you for your work to deliver on all of this. You are also right that we have to go further. The Defence Investment Plan does just that — delivering an unprecedented increase in defence spending in a sustainable way. It will provide the resources our military needs to keep us safe and the clarity the British defence industry needs to plan.

“go further” think have we heard that before. What does he mean?

Was there actually a Welfare Spending Review?

Or was that not needed?
