Which little luxuries are worth spending a bit more on?

Hi all!

As the title says - what are the little luxuries that are worth spending a bit more on for you? Just little bits that make you feel more intentional, I like a thin silk scrunchie for my hair instead of a normal hair band. It just makes me feel a bit put together.

A mattress - we spent £3k on a Hypnos mattress. You spend a full third of your life in bed. If it lasts 8 years that’s about 50p each a night.

NotMyRealAccount · 27/05/2026 20:50

Coffee.
Ice cream.

cmonspring · 27/05/2026 20:51

M&S tea bags and washing up liquid

Ocean 2 and Sandals. Bloody luxury.

Thanks - will look at these!

humptydumptyfelloff · 27/05/2026 20:53

Ah loads

m and s fruit and salad as it lasts and tastes so much better

expensive good quality shoes

expensive hand cream and moisturiser

organic hair colour and products

expensive washing liquid and softener

organic food /meat where possible

after many years of budget holidays we’ve splashed out abit more the last couple of years including private transfers both ends etc and it’s a game changer

nails. I now pay to have my nails done every single month. It’s around £55 a time however it feels like an absolute luxury after years of having them plain.
my hands now look so much nicer.

expensive eyeliner/mascara/ skin tint

sunglasses

my car. In 22 years of driving I chose a car with everything that I wanted, colour, automatic, seat warmers, sport line etc and it took me literally months to find it,mainly because I was so nervous about spending such a huge amount on it but worth every single penny.

Ok a mattress isn’t a small luxury, but then neither is a holiday in Barbados 😎

chipsticksmammy · 27/05/2026 20:55

M&S bagged salad and deli coleslaw.

Booths bread.

Dear Green Coffee - Goosedubs blend. Glasgow coffee roasters. Brilliant stuff.

TheFrendo · 27/05/2026 20:57

At low-budget end... Maldon Salt.

I know, it is just salt, but it comes in flakes which you can crumble/sprinkle over you food with your fingers.

Dimpledaisies · 27/05/2026 20:57

Honey
Granola
Supplements
Toothpaste
Facial products
Bedding
Mugs
Coffee

I’ve just treated myself to a new bed, new pillows and some beautiful white bed linen.

Where do you get bath towels? John lewis ones that used to last years now turn to cardboard almost immediately

I recommend trying Hampton and Astley. Need to follow the washing instructions carefully and tumble drying seems to get them extra fluffy. They aren’t cheap but they’re gorgeous.

The best mattress you can afford.
Quality bedding and lots of it for choice - some of my nicest was bought on eBay, hand embroidered French linen. Gets better every wash,
Decent cutlery-with weight to it.
A good set of knives.
Bean to cup coffee machine. On our 3rd now. Wouldn’t be without one ever now. Worth every penny,
Bread - I make my own now, or I pay £4-£6 a loaf.
Growing your own herbs - saves money in the long run.
Good salt. I’ve used Maldon sea salt since Delia turned us all onto it 25 yrs ago. Love it so much.
Potatoes - buy quality potatoes & buy the right one for the job. You can’t make a potato salad with a king Edward or mashed pots with a baking potato Jill! (I had an argument years ago about this. I still think of myself saying this when I buy king Edward’s in winter,)
A good potato ricer- great mash is achieved.
Meat from a butchers - eat less of it but you get better quality. A pork chop with the fillet piece attached (and kidney too if you want) is a thing of joy.
Fresh flowers. - even if it’s carnations which are always cheap. They bring joy.

I could write 100 more!

This is exactly in the spirit of the thread! And I agree.

What bedding do you recommend?

Unless we're talking mega money, Next has fantastic bedding. Their expensive stuff is the best quality I own.

sesquipedalian · 27/05/2026 21:09

@ FeltCarrot -
I can’t buy Lurpak now it comes in 200g packets. Anyone who does any amount of cooking would agree - a packet of butter needs to be 8oz or a bit more. And yes, beurre Président is the best.

RuudGullitOnAShed · 27/05/2026 21:14

Good butter
Locally made gelato (made on the farm where they milk)
Good quality coffee beans
Loose tea leaves

Coldiron · 27/05/2026 21:16

Olives. Life is too short for shit olives in a can.

Magnums rather than the own brand lollies

I had some Magnums this week and the ice cream seemed so tasteless. Have they changed the recipe since I last bought them?

Good bread from a bakery/homemade, good eggs, and the fancy butter with sea salt crystals in are our luxuries. The only problem is it makes most egg dishes underwhelming if we go out for brunch.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 27/05/2026 21:29

Just about anything tbh, although I'm not bothered what I wipe my bum on!

But chocolate, good quality clothes that last (I'm wearing a linen blouse today that I got from M&S in 2009), shoes that support and protect your feet, furniture that will last . . . it's true that if you buy cheap, you buy twice. Or more.

fundamentallyauthentic · 27/05/2026 21:30

Organic for eggs, coffee and milk. There’s a difference in taste.

Good quality chocolate - you’re talking almost £4 these days for 90 grams but it’s worth it.

200 thread at least 100% cotton bedding. John Lewis is my favourite. I could never go back to the poly / cotton stuff.

M&S fruit and veg.

searchforthesun · 27/05/2026 21:42

M&S fruit, especially the blood kiwis. Kerastase heat defence cream.
nice body lotions.

Frenzi · 27/05/2026 21:44

Flowers. I have a flower subscription and have beautiful fresh flowers delivered every two weeks.

Ineedanewsofa · 27/05/2026 21:48

Coffee, sourdough, soap (another Pears fan here!) tonic water (can make or break the G&T) knickers (100% cotton only) nail appointments, hair appointments, elizabeth arden 8 hour cream.

fundamentallyauthentic · 27/05/2026 21:52

Forgot to mention - Twinings tea.
