Good Lord.

This is the 5th time I have said Good Lord today.

I also agree with a poster who says these look as much like staged shots as today's phone photos do.

MaybeNotBob · 13/05/2026 11:37

And if the Labour party thinks that Wes Streeting is the answer, it's asking the wrong question...

DuncinToffee · 13/05/2026 11:37

Can't they just watch the TOTP reruns or 80s and 90s films?

OP posts:
PickAChew · 13/05/2026 11:41

All the TOTP re-runs that can still be aired. Aahh, the good old days.

Hahaha at Andy Burnham!

Game on. Streeting is apparently going to resign tomorrow and go for it.

A new report suggests Wes Streeting will resign as health secretary tomorrow to challenge Keir Starmer for the Labour leadership. That is according to Aubrey Allegretti and Patrick Maguire from the Times. They report:

Wes Streeting has told allies that he is preparing to resign and trigger a leadership contest as soon as tomorrow.

The health secretary confronted Sir Keir Starmer this morning during a meeting ahead of the king’s speech that lasted just 16 minutes over the turmoil engulfing the Labour party.

Allies of Streeting who have spoken to him directly said that he has made clear that he is “going to go for it”.

They said that he is likely to resign on Thursday and mount a formal challenge for the leadership

BUT it is The Times, so...

Edited

I definitely don’t think Wes Streeting is the answer to Labour’s problems, because of his known links with Mandelson, which would very quickly be brought up by Badenoch at PMQs.

Burnham is a better option, but I don’t see how he’ll get back into Parliament in today’s climate; he wouldn’t be able to win a by-election and he wouldn’t have any credibility if another MP gave up his seat for him.

Angela Rayner would still face questions over her tax issues, and would the Labour Party really elect a woman? (Although tbf she is popular within the party.)

But I don’t see how Starmer can regain his authority within the party.

LizzieW1969 · 13/05/2026 12:17

I do wish that, since Starmer is clearly determined to fight on, he could have been a lot more radical in this speech.

@LizzieW1969 2/3rds of the PLP haven’t expressed any lack of support. As many have expressed support as asked him to leave. I’m not sure he’s lost authority - yet. And I don’t think any change of leader at 5his moment would be beneficial.

I agree that it wouldn’t be beneficial to either the party or the country for there to be a change of PM. But I think he definitely needs to up his game, so that he can start to improve his poll ratings. Then the discontent within the Parliamentary party will dissipate.

Piggywaspushed · 13/05/2026 12:34

How do you 'up your game' with our right wing media though?

PickAChew · 13/05/2026 12:38

I missed red Ed, too 😂

Guardian have same story as the Times now wrt Streeting resignation/challenge tomorrow - with different additional sources

Yes, point taken. It will be very hard to combat that, obviously. But half the country voted for left of centre parties, so there’s still opportunity to turn it around. Especially with Reform councillors revealing their true colours.

littledrummergirl · 13/05/2026 12:46

If Streeting challenges at this moment in time, giving the hard right exactly what they want, he can never call himself a socialist, and will have no right even being in Labour, let alone leading it.

He would be a wanker of the first order.

TemperanceWest · 13/05/2026 12:46

I don't think Wes would win. He's not that popular with the membership, I don't think?

Especially with his known links to Mandelson. He must be tone deaf not to realise this.

Absolutely. Does he think the media will let him off the hook on that one?

DuncinToffee · 13/05/2026 12:54

From Guardian reporters (Elgot and Crerar)

Parliamentary Standards Commissioner will launch an investigation into Farage's £5m donation.

Understand that Nigel Farage is being investigated for a potential breach of rule 5 of MPs code of conduct which says that new MPs must register "all their current financial interests, and any registrable benefits" received in the 12 months before their election within one month of their election.

Direct speeches, social media. Just bypass the msm. He needs a shit hot social media team - they were red hot pre election - and a cracking speech writer. They need to capitalise on the opposition parties’ mistakes. In other words be sharper and more agile.

DuncinToffee · 13/05/2026 13:08

Sacking McSweeney was a first step. I am not sure who is his communication team now.

They know what the media is like, so deal with it.

Same, something very likeable about him unlike Streeting who always gives me “something of the night” about him vibes.

See, I don't think this works for Labour. The smear campaigns begin as soon as they are in post and even before. What is in the RW press has much further reach than we imagine as , even if it's on GBeebies it gets repeated worldwide on SM.
