Would you recognise Bagpuss?

I, born 1970, have him on a Tshirt.

DS, born 2003, has no idea, fair enough.

But, BF, born 1977, swears he's never heard of him.

There's only 7 years between us, it feels like a generational gulf!

I was born in 1972 and loved Bagpuss. The best episode was the one where the mice made a chocolate biscuit machine, reusing the same biscuit! So funny.

They would show a 15 min children’s programme on BBC1 just after Pebble Mill at lunchtime. Was either Bagpuss, Camberwick Green, You and Me, Chigley among others. My other favourite was the Mr Men programme. I can still hear the narrator now.

Born in 1974 and fondly remember Bagpuss

I was born in 1976 and Bagpuss loomed large in my childhood.

Maybe your DH had older siblings who preferred the higher-octane ITV offerings?

Born 90 absolutely would recognise ..am I wrong in saying it was remade at some point?

Astra53 · 17/04/2026 23:32

Born 1964. I love Bagpuss so much that my friend bought me a small soft toy version about 15 years ago.

Not remade that I am aware of but there was a ‘revival’ in the 90s with merch.

Riddo · 18/04/2026 12:42

I was born in 1966 and loved Bagpuss, my DD was born in 1994 and loved him too because I introduced her to him.

Handeyethingyowl · 18/04/2026 12:46

Apparently Hamble was called Hamble because she was from ‘humble’ origins as opposed to the middle-class Big Ted and Little Ted, in attempt to reflect the diversitt of the viewing audience.

I’m afraid this distinction was lost on me at four.

Yes! Born in 1980.

He went through a resurgence in the late 90s - I remember when I had my first car we all had a little bagpuss and George and Zippy beanies on our parcel shelves.

The kids I teach today wouldn’t have a clue, however, but they were born 2011-2015 ish!

RodJaneandBungle · 18/04/2026 12:55

One of the best kids programmes that adults love too!

PollyannaWhittier · 18/04/2026 13:13

Of course ! I was born in 1993 and I can recite the whole opening sequence; and my sister and I still sing several of the songs, and quote random parts of several episodes Grin Our parents brough us up on the classics from their childhoods - Camberwick Green, Bagpuss, Ivor the Engine, The Herbs etc.

DH bought our DD a TShirt with this pair on it ( bit before her time she's 23 but she knows who they are ! )

Bagpuss is iconic. My parents bought DVDs of quite a few of the classic tv series for our DC. So we all know Ivor the Engine (a double disc with Bagpuss), Mr Benn, Trumpton, Camberwick Green and Chigley. DH doesn't remember Chilgley for some reason plus anything that was shown on ITV because his parents were snobs 🤣
For those old enough that means he didn't see Magpie or How.

Hopefullycatok · 18/04/2026 16:01

I was born in 1978 & I know who Bagpuss is :)

I have an Emily born in early 2000 who has a bagpuss stuffie. She also has watched it.

Teaandscone · 18/04/2026 16:17

Breadcrumbs and butterbeans!

ChaToilLeam · 18/04/2026 16:28

I loved Bagpuss!! Born 1971, and my DP was born 1976 and remembers him too.

Overall I was more an ITV kid, because I loved Magpie, and Get It Together, and The Tomorrow People. But Bagpuss was special.

Toddlerteaplease · 18/04/2026 16:29

I was born in 81 and didn’t know who he was till I was an adult.
