Would you recognise Bagpuss?

I, born 1970, have him on a Tshirt.

DS, born 2003, has no idea, fair enough.

But, BF, born 1977, swears he's never heard of him.

There's only 7 years between us, it feels like a generational gulf!

I'm a 90's kid and I recognise him. Must have been a nostalgic re-run or old VHS tap.

Mysterian · 16/04/2026 23:16

In the street in daytime, yes. If it was past midnight in a dimly lit club and he's wearing black leather harnesses on top of a latex catsuit, maybe not.

Whatnow89 · 16/04/2026 23:28

Born 1992 and I remember bagpuss! I had a teddy bagpuss and a Charlie mouse who used to sing “we will find it, we will bind it, we will stick it with glue glue glue, we will stickle it, every little bit of it, we will stick it like new new new”. I remember all the words even though I probably haven’t heard it for 20 years 😅

Hedgehog23 · 16/04/2026 23:40

Born 1977 and I love bagpuss. As does my sister (1980).

SpringAndSunshineIsHere · 16/04/2026 23:57

Yes I would - 1976

worstnotholiday · 16/04/2026 23:57

I recognise bagpuss as there was a big 90s fandom of merch on bagpuss- I have a teddy, pajamas etc. but on meeting my husband (1977 born) I found out that it was not just a cute cuddly cat (like a Ty teddy) that had caught on, but rather a children’s tv show (with some lovely music!)

CuppaWhiteTea · 17/04/2026 00:08

My husband and I were both born in the late 70s. In about 2015 they had a Bagpuss exhibition in the Bethnal Green Museum of Childhood, which we went to. The real Bagpuss from the show was in a glass display case. It was so lovely watching an endless stream of men and women our age walking in, looking around, spotting Bagpuss and crying “There he is!” in voices of utter delight, as if being reunited with a very old and very dear childhood friend.

Sounds as if you don’t know Bagpuss quite as well as some of us then….

And don’t get me started on Charlie and his Mechanical Mouse Organ. Pure filth.

Yes. I was born in 1984 and I didn’t watch Bagpuss but I still know what he looks like.

Me too & like Emily I loved him! I had a much older sister & cousins so I was exposed to a lot of things "before my time"

There was definitely a baggy old cloth cat knocking around in one of the houses growing up

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 17/04/2026 05:49

Yes (early 70s) and the DC (2008, 2011).

Born in 1974 and love Bagpuss but I wouldn’t recognise him because I watched in black and white and I thought he was ORANGE, not PINK!

I thought he was orange too ( also watched in B&W)

sashh · 17/04/2026 07:12

I have a Bagpuss hot water bottle cover. I once sent a small Bagpuss to a friend who is 12 years younger than me, he also know Bagpuss.

I also have a Charlie Mouse.

MotherOfCrocodiles · 17/04/2026 07:20

Lol! Yep! We had this too 😆

GoldMoon · 17/04/2026 07:34

Yes I would . Trying to defend your dp, maybe Bagpuss was seen as not a " boy " thing so was never oonf his radar . Can you name all the cars or war like toy's that were popular back then ?

Favory · 17/04/2026 07:38

Lots of love for Bagpuss in our family. We saw him in real life in a museum in Canterbury, he did not disappoint. It was pretty surreal to see him, a friend from childhood, sitting there on his cushion surrounded by his friends, both inside and outside the cabinet!

The Herbs were a family favourite too, "I feel like a good howl". Iconic.

I'm a bloke. Bagpuss, that old fat furry cat-puss, was a delight. I really liked Thunderbirds but I loved Bagpuss.

DrEmilyCrabtree · 17/04/2026 09:22

Late 70s and definitely know Bagpuss. I have a cuddly one that my dad gave me

Couchpotato3 · 17/04/2026 10:15

Your BF has clearly had a deprived childhood. I once visited the office of an Oxford professor who had dozens of Bagpusses scattered around her room!

shufflestep · 17/04/2026 10:54

If you don't know, you can go and see the real original Bagpuss (and all the other characters) in the Beaney in Canterbury. They've also got the Clangers, Ivor the Engine drawings, Noggin the Nog, the Herbs.....a real nostalgia fest!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 17/04/2026 13:54

I have a Charlie Mouse who used to sing, bus his voice box broke some years ago.

I would love to know what thread this poster thought they were on!

OneBusyFinch · 17/04/2026 14:30

This thread has reawakened my desire for a bagpuss. Where can I buy a proper copy of him? Have done a quick google but most look like really poor copies

skyeisthelimit · 17/04/2026 14:41

1972 and know Bagpuss. My friend born in 1978 recognises him and has one.

Is Charlie Mouse part of the bold mice who pretended they had like a chocolate biscuit factory but (*Spoiler Alert) it was the same one?

Oh man I have to raid youtube later 😂

also @Whatnow89 & @TheBirdintheCave

Side note I ALWAYS wanted the OG Humpty from Playschool, if he's in The Beaney in Canterbury I'm off @shufflestep !
