Would you recognise Bagpuss?

I, born 1970, have him on a Tshirt.

DS, born 2003, has no idea, fair enough.

But, BF, born 1977, swears he's never heard of him.

There's only 7 years between us, it feels like a generational gulf!

Oh I definitely would. It would be hard to pick a favourite between Bag puss and Mr Ben as a favourite. I've now got the organ mice, mending song as an ear worm. 😁 My husband can barely remember Bagpuss though. He was probably outside playing football for the whole summer of 76!

  1. Absolutely! And may have made my children watch him on YouTube..

I'm not alone so 😂

My husband and I were both born in the late 70s. In about 2015 they had a Bagpuss exhibition in the Bethnal Green Museum of Childhood, which we went to. The real Bagpuss from the show was in a glass display case. It was so lovely watching an endless stream of men and women our age walking in, looking around, spotting Bagpuss and crying “There he is!” in voices of utter delight, as if being reunited with a very old and very dear childhood friend.

No way!!! I'd love that! What an experience

sanityisamyth · 17/04/2026 17:58

I would but I don’t really know what it is. Born 1983 but didn’t have a childhood.

Is Charlie Mouse part of the bold mice who pretended they had like a chocolate biscuit factory but (*Spoiler Alert) it was the same one?

Oh man I have to raid youtube later 😂

also @Whatnow89 & @TheBirdintheCave

Side note I ALWAYS wanted the OG Humpty from Playschool, if he's in The Beaney in Canterbury I'm off @shufflestep !

Afraid it's only the 'Smallfilms' characters like Bagpuss, the Clangers etc - made by Oliver Postgate and Peter Firmin. They made all their animations from a barn in a village just outside Canterbury, which is why all the originals are there.

Age 67, parents had a tv well before I was born. Not allowed to warch much, if any, ITV. Considered too vulgar.

Scorchio84 · 17/04/2026 18:20

I suppose Humpty was A List 😎@shufflestep Ah that looks really cool, what a treat! Also so cool that the creators "Smallfilms" made their creations there in Canterbury, what a legacy

When I was in college I worked in this crazy vintage shop part time & next door was the original Dolls Hospital here in Dublin & I used to pop in once a week on my lunch break just to look at the old massive dolls House & really old teddies etc..not the in patients but really old vintage, worn & weather beaten teddies & dolls even though I'm not a massive doll fan..it was a shame when they relocated & I actually think they've even shut up shop so to speak completely

What about Hamble? I personally believe the rumour that she is the spawn of Satan and that she had been buried in a lead lined box on consecrated ground.

Oh fuck me Hamble!! Talk about nominiative determination, she was wretched! Mind you I wasn't a fan of Jemima either..Humpty was the love of my life, even though he had some velvet on him & it gives me the willies.. Hamble though? Where did that name come from? I feel a deep dive coming on 😂

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 17/04/2026 18:45

I had to look, didn’t I…

Go on, google it. You won’t be disappointed (although you may be a little nervy 🤣)

Neuronimo · 17/04/2026 18:46

Ooh Hamble, was the stuff of nightmares! Did anyone else get very cross if the story wasn't through the Arched window?

thatAgneswhocallsherselfPerditax · 17/04/2026 18:47

I was born in 1978 and remember Bagpuss well! TV shows tended to be repeated multiple times back then, so I’m surprised your husband never saw it.

There was also something of a revival of Bagpuss memorabilia around the late 90s or early 2000s, I think? I remember seeing slightly younger, mostly alternative-dressing girls with t-shirts, fluffy backpacks and similar.

But I was quite shocked to discover that Bagpuss was bright PINK!! I’d watched on a black and white TV as a young child, and always imagined him being marmalade cat-coloured.

Pinkywoo · 17/04/2026 18:51

Born in 1980 and he was my favourite when I was little, I even bought the VHS of him when I was a student and made my flatmates watch it when we were drunk!

Oh yes, me too with the colour!

ComeOnPhilEarlySpringPlease · 17/04/2026 18:54

1971 yes, could draw him for ya

Regarding Hamble (and other strikingly ugly dolls of the period, notably Tiny Tears) I think the problem was that their faces were sculpted to resemble newborn babies. They’d have looked fine if they’d been left bald or with a few wisps, but then manufacturers inexplicably added that thick, artificial-looking hair.

The result was that they looked (to me at least) like bad-tempered old women who’d just been for a shampoo and set!

OMG YOU ARE SPOT ON 🙈 I hated all dolls as a child but Hamble and her ilk gave me nightmares - and that’s why. I hadn’t made the connection!

Maybe this is why I hate dolls, my sister had Tiny Tears & even Teeny Tiny Tears? Did she cry? maybe when she saw me coming after years of blissful retirement in the toy trunk 😂My friend loves those porceline dolls.. I'll say no more

spiderlight · 17/04/2026 19:05

Yes of course I would! Born in 1972.

I remember them at raves like dodees of small backpacks in the 2000s! Thanks for that unlocked memory x

ruethewhirl · 17/04/2026 19:07

Born late sixties so was a tad old for Bagpuss by the time he came out, but I didn’t let that stop me. 😄 Got a Bagpuss car ornament on my dashboard.

StJulian2023 · 17/04/2026 19:24

Absolutely. He’s a legend. Born 1979.

Cheersmedears123 · 17/04/2026 20:04

I’d have thought most people over the age of 30 would recognise Bagpuss!

My Mum would let me watch Blue Peter (it's educational she said) but never Magpie on ITV.
Never found out why !
