Would you recognise Bagpuss?

I, born 1970, have him on a Tshirt.

DS, born 2003, has no idea, fair enough.

But, BF, born 1977, swears he's never heard of him.

There's only 7 years between us, it feels like a generational gulf!

Yes I would. My DS born 1998 and DD 2002 also know exactly who Bagpuss is.

JoanChitty · 16/04/2026 19:10

Love Bagpuss. I have a cuddly Bagpuss that makes the yawning sound and is currently being looked after by my granddaughter who is nearly 4.

theleftsuitcase · 16/04/2026 19:10

My teenagers would, but we do have it on dvd!

DandyPanda · 16/04/2026 19:12

Yes I would, born in 2000

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 16/04/2026 19:13

Born in 1974, Bagpuss was a much loved part of my childhood. Seems so dated now but I adored it growing up.

Handeyethingyowl · 16/04/2026 20:05

I was born in 78. It was definitely on TV when I was little, along with a lot of other 70s programmes. Then the 90s revival came and I have a cuddly Bagpuss from that which is still on my bed. Also showed the DVD to my kids. I feel sorry for your BF, what a deprived childhood!

SomethingSScintillating · 16/04/2026 20:08

@Mischance absoltuy it's so pared back, simple and charming yet with enough meat to keep enquiring minds interested

I'm around the same age as you and I'd recognise Bagpuss in an instant. I loved that saggy old cloth cat.

When I was very young, though, we only had a black and white TV so I assumed he was orange and white - after all, who has ever seen a pink and white cat? By the time we got a colour TV they'd either stopped showing the programme and/or I had aged out of the audience. I think I was in my 20s when I happened to see Bagpuss in colour and the cognitive dissonance was striking.

He was supposed to be orange and white but I think the company which produced the original material made a mistake in the dyeing process.

I was born in the late 70s and love Bagpuss!

JMSA · 16/04/2026 20:21

Yes, born 1974.

And actually, on account of my love of sleep/napping, this was ex husband’s nickname for me! 😳

NoWordForFluffy · 16/04/2026 20:23

Born late '76. I loved Bagpuss. I have two toy ones...my kids have one each, so they could recognise him too (11 and 12)!

user2848502016 · 16/04/2026 20:49

Born 1981, yes of course!

I reckon anyone younger than me might not though because he was getting a bit past it by the time I was a young child!

TheDellsYoursongNsoul · 16/04/2026 20:55

Oh Bagpuss,Oh Bagpuss look at this thing that I bring.
Born mid 60s.

WaryCrow · 16/04/2026 21:06

Ive got a little booklet that was free on a crochet magazine with a bagpuss toddler jumper and a little toy pattern. May have been the only reason I bought that mag.

TheBirdintheCave · 16/04/2026 21:13

Yes of course. 86 here :) Mum had me watch videos of Watch With Mother and the Clangers too 😅

Gowlett · 16/04/2026 21:17

Depends where he grew up?

We were rural, and only had a couple of local channels. When we moved to a city, we had BBC & ITV. Then Channel 4.

Wouldn’t have watched Bagpuss, as a child.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 16/04/2026 21:18

Born 1984 and have no memory of watching bagpuss at all. I do know what he looks like, but only from seeing a toy at a friend's house as an adult.

MirandaWest · 16/04/2026 21:18

Born 1975 and love Bagpuss. Pretty sure DD born 2005 would recognise him. Not so sure about DS born 2003 but he might well do

ilovepixie · 16/04/2026 21:22

Yes loved him, born 1968.

runningonberocca · 16/04/2026 21:29

Born 1974 - huge part of my childhood! Sometimes watch episodes on YouTube if I’m feeling particularly stressed.

garlictwist · 16/04/2026 21:32

Born 1982. Never heard of it.
