Things you're doing in your life right now that would sound bonkers if you told anyone, but make sense to you....

I'm currently stalking a man in my neighbourhood because I love his dog. I've bumped into this man and his dog twice. I've started going out at the same-ish time and walking the same-ish route in the hopes of meeting him his dog

I have a whole imaginary world in my head where I'm a former supermodel now living a quiet life in the countryside. When I'm pottering around doing household chores, I pretend Louis Theroux is following me asking me probing questions about my tough childhood and stratospherically successful career.

I plan retirement every single day. I model different scenarios with different levels of income. I look at properties in retirement communities a lot. I'm 40.

I would never say these things out loud to another human because they make me sound absolutely bonkers. But there it is.
Tell me your weirdness that you could never verbalise...

I can't find the post now but yesterday someone commented about enjoying getting up at 4.30am to have a quiet brew before their DH got up.

To that poster - I get this totally. My dog was really ill a few summers ago and used to get up at all hours, including at sunrise around 4am. When it became clear she was going to be okay but still used to get up super early, I really enjoyed it. It was so quiet and felt like it was just me and her alone in the whole universe.

Sometimes nights I think I'd love to get up super early the next morning. But I never wake up before 7am and, if I did, I'd never force the dog to get up that early (she sleeps beside me in bed).

But I totally get the appeal if super early mornings.

my friend does this always up early and goes to bed early.
She does work, but says she still does it if on holiday.
I wonder if she'd do it in retirement. Maybe I'll ask here

Like some posters upthread I fantasize about what I would do if I won Lotto. (As I dont even do it there is fat chance but anyone can dream)

I would like to walk out of this house, change my name, go somewhere else (probably another country) and just leave it all behind. Just leave my possessions, my responsibilities, my bills and everything for someone else to clear up and cope with. It would be like starting again.

The ironic thing is that I did this in real life (to some extent) when I left the city of my birth and went to uni as a mature student. I changed my name. I left a big rates bill behind as I didnt agree with the system. I also left behind some unsatisfactory relationships.

This has been a conversation between friends recently, a 'what would you do if you won' etc thing. Most of the things people came up with they'd either done already to some extent at different times in their life or actually didn't need the big money to do except the house of their dreams bit.

My dog and I chat all day long, but in the most disgusting sweary language.

I have no idea why but it really cheers me up.

🤣

My husbands taken the kids to his parents for his parents for a few hours. Rather than do things useful like housework or something productive for myself like read a book or watch some documentaries, I'm sat on my bed, cup of tea in hand away to waste some time looking for my fantasy house 😁

I am careful to use all of my mugs in rotation so that they will never know that actually 2 of them are very much my favourite mugs and I get a little bump of happiness when it is either of their turn- I keep a poker face so the other mugs will not pick up on this.

Genius! I do this as well but I didn't realise it was because I was trying to pretend I didn't have a favourite mug. And I do, I have two favourite mugs just like you 😳

I didn't want to break my favourite mug and be bereft so I bought loads of it. I now have nearly 20 identical favourite mugs in use. (And another 10 stored in the loft for when breakages happen). I love that mug so much!

The not favourite mugs that I kept sit languishing in a cupboard wishing they lived in yours or @Cathpot house! They silently judge me every time I open the cupboard.

I do this with the pretty China side plates. They all get rotated but I have my favourites and I'm always pleased to see them on their turn.

The daydream I have in my head a lot is that I’m made the showrunner of Doctor Who. I’ve already planned out a whole season in my head and it’s rather good in my opinion. Oh and a comedy series about my hometown, which, if you’ve ever been there is comedy gold waiting to be mined.

Finally, my daydream about the lottery is that I win it but don’t tell my other half and just secretly have a very swish beach house I drink cocktails in like Moira Rose off Schitts Creek.

She's quite big though ... I wouldn't want one that size!

Maybe a mouse-sized T-rex would be a bit less scary than a dog-sized Protoceratops?

thevoiceofreasoning · 19/04/2026 02:24

Love this thread!
My daydream is to be at a open mic event and everyone be totally in awe at my hidden talent when I jump up to sing the perfect rendition of ‘what’s up’ (4 Non-blondes) whilst playing the guitar. In real life I sound like a less tuneful Hilda Ogden ….

I use my mugs in rotation in case any of them feels hurt at not being used. I want to be fair to them all.

I do a similar thing with knickers.

Glad to hear it's not just me who's a little bit...eccentric 😆

To pass the time on long journeys I have won the top prize on a game show and have to pick a number between 1 and 5. This corresponds to cars going the opposite way, so if I've picked 2 then I win the second car. I have to assess all 5 cars to see if I've picked well, or am disappointed with an old banger. I sometimes have to look down at my lap for a few minutes so I have not cheated by seeing the first car in the distance.

I neither drive, nor have any interest in actually being on a game show or winning a car.

😅😅😅😅😅

In my mind, I imagine I am starring in a musical throughout the day. So, when I have to hang up the laundry I imagine I am singing a song about it in front of an audience wearing all kinds of amazing costumes.

When I go running I imagine I am a hired ninja assassin and when I run towards other people in the park I imagine I am on a mission to eliminate them just like the terminator

I often imagine I am various animals depending on how I need to present myself that day. Eg if I am in charge of running a meeting then I am a lioness - powerful and self assured. If I need to confront someone I become a shark etc

Genius!!

Bellaviolets · 19/04/2026 09:48

I think this has been such a wonderful thread to read and nice to find another community of daydreamers!

I've done this for as long as I can remember. I know some people do it as a coping mechanism or to cope with lonlieness etc but I had a happy, loving childhood and had siblings and friends to play with it. I don't have autism, adhd or ocd and only anxiety so maybe to do with that? I don't know. I actually find it harder to go into my imaginary world when I'm in periods of high stress.

But I used to spend hours in my room drawing pictures and writing stories of this whole family and community I'd invented. I'd spent hours giving them all back stories and jobs and used to draw detailed plans of their houses (furnished from the argos catalogue!) And it's all stemmed from there. I see similar in my eldest who is 4. Again he has no additional needs and is a happy and socialable boy but he is VERY into imaginative play so I wonder if he'll be similar to me!

I never told anyone about all the worlds I created and still don't now but it wasn't until I read an article on maladaptive daydreaming that I actually realised there was a word for it and others like me!

Hoovering the ceiling and the walls.
Not a regular thing, but every 6 months or so.

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 19/04/2026 10:15

I have DID so I wander around the room having deep discussions with my headmates.

But...but....she's a herbivore! Only grass and plants need fear her jaws! Keep your nasty snappy mini Rexes away from us, or Pen might end up tossing them over her shoulders - or accidentally treading on them! 😅

PS she makes a great guard dino! 👍

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 19/04/2026 11:26

I often wish I had a car so I could play the left/right game from r/nosleep. You need a car because there's a point where you have to pick up a hitchhiker.

I strategise about how I would hypothetically steal things from department stores / supermarkets.

It's an intrusive thought, because in reality I am a goody two shoes who has only stolen the odd grape.

I've never even stolen a grape because I'd be too worried about the hundreds of hands that have already touched it. Some people don't wash their hands after going to the toilet.

goingback · 19/04/2026 11:38

planning overnight camping trips in my car even have a small tent and blankets in the boot. I decide on the destinations, plan the routes and make an itinerary for when I get there. I even imagine being scared at night in my tent and how to sleep in the car if the weather is bad.
