Is a round of applause when a plane lands lovely or cringe?

I think it's lovely.

It is very cringe.

RedRiverShore6 · 04/04/2026 20:06

Depends if it's a normal landing or a near death experience

Legolaslady · 04/04/2026 20:06

Just weird imo
Do you clap your taxi driver?

JumpinJehoshaphat · 04/04/2026 20:07

It’s so embarrassing. No one with even an ounce of decorum would do it.

Lilacspring · 04/04/2026 20:08

Cringe

TheCurious0range · 04/04/2026 20:08

The only time I'd experienced it until recently was when we'd had horrific turbulence and landed in the middle of a storm and you could feel the wind bashing the plane around, that pilot deserved the applause. Then suddenly the last two flights i've been on since September clapping on landing, perfectly ordinary short haul flights. Bizarre. DS asked why people were clapping, I told him honestly, I didn't know.

MissCooCooMcgoo · 04/04/2026 20:09

Eh, why not? So little joy in life sometimes. I say we should cheer and clap at more things tbh.

Plenty of time to be miserable when your dead.

YerMotherWasAHamster · 04/04/2026 20:09

Its not objectively one or the other because its a matter of opinion.

Mine is that its stupid.

TwistedWonder · 04/04/2026 20:09

Not just a bit cringe absolutely off the scale hideously embarrassing toe curling cringe

RedRiverShore6 · 04/04/2026 20:09

I thought people only clapped when something bad has happened like engine on fire or no landing gear and then you are just thankful to not be dead so clap

TheTideIsNigh · 04/04/2026 20:09

If it’s a landing in a hurricane, maybe just about acceptable. Otherwise it’s very cringe.

This.

Normal - cringe.
Terrifying - lovely

Have been on one flight with lots of turbulence and a very hairy landing. That deserved a round of applause.

My DP has landed at Lukla Airport and said everyone on the small plane clapped. Have a quick Google of landings at Lukla Airport 😱

And why is decorum so very important?

Ukholidaysaregreat · 04/04/2026 20:10

The only time I have had this happen was in LICs and I think people were genuinely pleased to have landed and still be alive. I liked it! There should be more clapping and general happiness.

Round the ear if he takes the scenic route.😁

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 04/04/2026 20:11

When I was cabin crew - a very long time ago - I do remember that once virtually all the passengers burst into applause, since our captain had landed the plane so gently, no bump or anything, that if you hadn’t known we’d landed, you’d never have believed it.

It was a VC10. They were lovely planes.

TBH I’ve never heard passengers applauding a landing since.

ILoveDaffodills · 04/04/2026 20:11

If it was a very difficult landing & a round of applause from lots of passengers - liveky 👏🏻🤗

one passenger in a very ordinary flight - massively cringey!!

Tigerbalmshark · 04/04/2026 20:11

I’ve only seen this on American flights (either to, from or in the US). It’s super weird, like you thought there was a chance you wouldn’t make it.

TrustedTheWrongFart · 04/04/2026 20:11

I clap my bus driver when I get to my stop.

User8457363 · 04/04/2026 20:12

Many years ago I had to fly Ryanair to an airport which was only reachable by that airline. The friend picking me up warned me that Ryanair was full of people who "clap when the plane lands" and he wasn't wrong. It seems like behaviour from those who literally never fly or can only afford to fly so occasionally that a plane ride feels like a special event.

MyJollyMentor · 04/04/2026 20:12

Is it pure relief? Then lovely

"Wheeeeeyyyyyyyy! Fab driving there Steve!"

Betano · 04/04/2026 20:13

Total cringe.

Might start doing this instead of saying "thank you driver".
