Is a round of applause when a plane lands lovely or cringe?

I think it's lovely.

I find it a little bit cringe, more so when I was younger. Now? Not really bothered! If it makes people feel better, what harm does it do? Some people are infrequent flyers and may have been a massive bag of nerves - let them clap when they safely land! It’s hardly anything to judge someone by. Mind when people used to bang pots in lockdown 😬

ChocolateBasket · 04/04/2026 23:07

Cringe. Why do people do it? To say well done to the pilot or relief? Or both?

To me that says "I'm a cunt"

i hated the clapping during Covid. I once went to Aldi on my way home from work and had forgotten to take of my NHS lanyard. People in the queue told me to go the front and then clapped as I walked past. I work in substance misuse and not an icu nurse. I was mortified.

Ryanair used to (maybe still do?) play a fanfare when they landed on time. FIL flew a lot with them and said they said flights were longer than they actually were, in order to keep their "97 per cent on time" record (or whatever it was).

I remember the Ryanair trumpet fanfare too, it used to make me laugh. Like they were clapping themselves for landing! 📯😆

I've been on a few different airlines where passengers have clapped. I've never felt the need to but not annoyed or cringing for those who do it, it's usually 30 seconds or so, no big deal.

Ha ha

My teens already know not to give a shiny shit about strangers who don't know them and will never see again think...

Maybe they can teach you then. Since you felt the need to ask the opinion of strangers.

Relief your safely back home and a laugh..a bita fun x

Youshouldbestrongerthanme · 04/04/2026 23:42

I'm 45 but genuinely feel so relieved every time I safely land from a flight I clap until my hands are sore - always amazes me the cabin crew don't start throwing me fish!
My poor husband 😄

I’ve only ever witnessed this on American Airlines flights to and from Miami and New York.
It’s cringey!!
There was nothing special about these flights at all. I find a lot of Americans cringey to be honest. They make a big show about things you and I would just shrug off.

murasaki · 05/04/2026 00:00

Cringe in normal circumstances. I've experienced it once, when we were caught in a sandstorm in Egypt, and were told that after third turbulent time at trying to land in Luxor that we'd be diverted back to Cairo and have to bus it down for several hours , and I actually found myself praying for the first time in years, it was that scary, yes, I joined in the claps when we made it. It is still the most scared I've been in my life.

I think it's lovely.

The crew think clappers are wankers

eggandonion · 05/04/2026 00:28

@Newtwopothouse Best placename ever!
I always join in rounds of applause on Ryanair flights and thank bus drivers. I love the idea that it's cultural.

Ladamesansmerci · 05/04/2026 00:30

I mean, I wouldn't clap, but internally I'm clapping. I absolutely hate flying and I'm really scared!

I don't think it's a big deal though. It feels quite joyful and happy. People shouldn't be such miseries.

mondaytosunday · 05/04/2026 01:04

Does the pilot even hear it? I think if it’s been a difficult, turbulent flight then gosh yes thank the people that got you there in one piece! But I’m the kind that always thanks the bus driver etc.

It's customary and expected in some cultures, so a bit xenophobic to categorically label it as "cringe". But it's not common or trad in the UK, so let's say someone did it on a London to Aberdeen flight - I'm more inclined to say it's people who consider it customary, and/or local people who have adopted a custom they've seen elsewhere and like. I'd say it's fine - what harm does it do?

PS - it's not a traditional USA 'thing", but Puerto Ricans (who are mostly US citizens) and a lot of other Latin Americans do it. In Europe, I think it is mostly German, Russian, Italian, or Baltic. Israelis often do it too.

Lots of Irish too.

We also say 'thank you' to the bus driver. This is considered polite, not done because we rarely travel on a bus.

I thank the crew when I'm getting off the plane too.

Friendlygingercat · 05/04/2026 01:14

As I was getting off I always used to put my hand on the fusilage and say "thank you plane". I got a few funny looks. Did I care what randoms thought of me?

There's a lot of jockeying for coolness points on this thread. I think you just won the boiled sweet prize.

Clapping when the plane lands is very RyanAir...

Ooooh, now that's a dig.

Are you not a teensy tiny bit embarrassed to appear so snooty?

Everyone thanks the bus driver here.

Like your username too!
Pass through it a lot 😊
And yes, everyone thanks the bus driver here.

Inthenameoflove · 05/04/2026 01:39

I’ve only experienced it when there was severe turbulence and it was a bit scary. It seemed to break out spontaneously and everyone joined it. It didn’t feel cringe in the moment.

Twilightstarbright · 05/04/2026 02:00

I’m in SE Asia and no one clapped on the long haul flight or any of the short haul flights. No one seemed miserable either, just didn’t clap! My experience leads me to believe it’s a certain type of flight that has clapping.

Similarly, I’ve never heard noise on a plane like a flight to Ibiza. There was clapping throughout the flight amongst other things.

sashh · 05/04/2026 03:15

Tigerbalmshark · 04/04/2026 20:11

I’ve only seen this on American flights (either to, from or in the US). It’s super weird, like you thought there was a chance you wouldn’t make it.

I've only come across it in South America but I have not flown for a while.

I'm a teensy bit embarrassed for you that you took that ridiculous post seriously.

Riapia · 05/04/2026 03:50

Only on the return flight, in relief at being back home.

tofumad · 05/04/2026 04:01

Totally cringe
