Is a round of applause when a plane lands lovely or cringe?

I think it's lovely.

It is cringe. Whenever I’ve been on a plane and it’s happened, I feel embarrassed on behalf of people that do it.

It’s only ever happened on jet 2, tui package holiday type flights, I’ve never had it happen on any flights with national carriers like BA, Air France, Thai airways etc.

Whatnameisif · 04/04/2026 21:26

Cringe. I saw it on flights to America first and it seems to be spreading.

I occasionally clap if the weather makes landing particularly bad.

Youreoneofakind · 04/04/2026 21:27

I think it’s nice to clap, but then I am quite nervous and am always glad to land safely.
I also thank bus drivers.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 04/04/2026 21:31

Germans always do it. I find it odd.

LindorDoubleChoc · 04/04/2026 21:33

Utterly cringe. Omg I am cringeing so hard even reading these words. Thank fuck I've never been on a flight where it's happened.

JulietteHasAGun · 04/04/2026 21:34

I had what felt like a near death experience on an Emirates flight, plane was plummeting and people screaming and vomiting. I was lifted off my seat and was having to hang onto the backrest in front to push myself down. Even then nobody clapped when we landed. 😆

Never seen it on a transatlantic flight either. Only with Ryainair, Monarch and EasyJet. Didn’t Ryanair (maybe they still do) play a fanfare over the tannoy when they landed? Have I dreamt that. Everyone was always clapping on Dublin flights but I think they’re full of drunk stag and hen parties so all a bit giddy.

Luckyingame · 04/04/2026 21:36

Fucking cringe.
Unfortunately, people from my country are known for doing this.
(Czech Republic).
Portable hole to jump in would be a solution.

Recklessismymiddlename · 04/04/2026 21:36

Had it on a Virgin flight once, when we had to be diverted, due to bad weather. It was a grim flight. Seatbelt sign on most of the time.

Another 2 are BA, one for landing in winds in Madeira and after aborted landing for Budapest, when the plane just shot straight back up, as he couldn’t see runway due to fog. I’d have snogged the pilot when we landed, never mind applaud him.

otherwise cringe. And if others clap I don’t. Dh calls me a spoilsport. Doesn’t happen very often though.

RubieChewsDay · 04/04/2026 21:03

You mean Gen Z. Gen X are too busy grumbling about how we always used to thank the bus driver.

You are absolutely correct!

RedRiverShore6 · 04/04/2026 20:09

I thought people only clapped when something bad has happened like engine on fire or no landing gear and then you are just thankful to not be dead so clap

This ^

Any other time - ultra cringe

Whiskeymum · 04/04/2026 21:53

Totally cringe worthy.

TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis · 04/04/2026 20:57

My 2.5yo decided to do it spontaneously when we landed back in the UK. No one else was doing it, he just started as soon as we hit the tarmac!

So I now think it's adorable.

It is!!

...if you're 2.5 years old!

BigGra · 04/04/2026 22:00

I didn’t know this was a still a thing as hadn’t experienced it in years until last December when our flight from Madrid landed in Dublin during storm Bram. The plane was full of Spanish students who burst into clapping and cheering.
Bar a scenario like that, plane clapping is awful and unnecessary.

EvangelinaMae · 04/04/2026 22:20

I think it's nice. I'm always a bit miffed when no one claps. I always feel like giving a little a cheer. It's like waving at a passing boat or train, isn't it.

MissCooCooMcgoo · 04/04/2026 20:10

And why is decorum so very important?

Clapping when the plane lands is very RyanAir...

RedToothBrush · 04/04/2026 22:22

TheTideIsNigh · 04/04/2026 20:09

If it’s a landing in a hurricane, maybe just about acceptable. Otherwise it’s very cringe.

This.

soontobeamama · 04/04/2026 22:23

I haven’t been on a plane where passengers have clapped for years - is it still a thing?

I actually used to quite like it - especially when there had been a lot of turbulence; it was like a collective relief when we landed safely.

Ryanair used to (maybe still do?) play a fanfare when they landed on time. FIL flew a lot with them and said they said flights were longer than they actually were, in order to keep their "97 per cent on time" record (or whatever it was).

PurBal · 04/04/2026 22:34

I literally expect one thing of a flight: to get me from A to B.

WhaleEye · 04/04/2026 22:38

The only time it happened on a flight I was on was when there were terrible cross winds and the pilot had 2 attempts to land before planting it. The whole cabin went silent during it, just willing him to get it on the ground otherwise we faced a diversion.
Everyone was so relieved we all clapped.

Just flown with them. No fanfare, lottery tickets or clapping. Thanks god

Mind you, they’d probably charge you extra for it now.

Jamesblonde2 · 04/04/2026 22:57

Complete and utter cringe. Hope you don’t have teens with you OP they’d never forgive you.

If you’re clapping the pilot doing his job, he can’t even hear you. Embarrassing.

Morepositivemum · 04/04/2026 22:58

Only ever clapped when we all thought we’d possibly not get there. Totally warranted!!!

My teens already know not to give a shiny shit about strangers who don't know them and will never see again think...

It’s cringe. The Romanians do it all the time.
