Is a round of applause when a plane lands lovely or cringe?

I think it's lovely.

You both sound horrible.

They don't reallu. It really used to be so common on ryanair (former frequent ryanair flier) and lots of came to similar assumption. I clapped with everyone the first time😂. Was bit confused because my first ever flight on not low cost no one clapped (then I started payinh my own tickets and couldn't afford BA and such🙈). You could also see it in security queue that lots of people never or rarely flew and so weren't sure what to do.
But that's really long time ago and I have not encountered clapping lately on any arline. Which could in some way actually support that people now fly more generally so stopped clapping. Maybe.

I find flying so terrifying (I have to take Diazapam) that I am so happy to be back on the ground in one piece that I do often feel like clapping although my DH keeps a grip on me.

I always thank the bus driver. One time in Stansted I said ' thanks ' and he looked mortified. So I resolved not to embarrass myself next time. But I forgot and was rewarded with a dazzling smile. So you never know.

It would be very strange where we live not to hear someone thank the driver as they get off the bus.

I don’t clap on a plane though but I hear it regularly on the Newcastle to Milan flight. Not the return leg though! 🤔

EverardDeTroyes · 04/04/2026 21:09

I think it is an indicator of how scared people are to fly and how relieved they are to be safely on the ground again. So I would quite like it because it would mean I was not the only timid flyer. That said, I only remember it happening once when the plane landed in extremely difficult conditions. It was pure relief.

Pebbles16 · 04/04/2026 21:09

Very often it's cultural but - as more people fly - it's dying out

TheChosenTwo · 04/04/2026 21:10

I don’t think it’s lovely or cringe, I don’t do it myself because I’m usually hyperventilating 😂
I do find it a bit strange though as Ive been on planes before when there has been clapping on landing but the pilot can’t surely hear as they are in the cockpit with the doors firmly shut and headphone things on aren’t they? So I don’t really understand who people think they’re clapping for.

PeachBlossom1234 · 04/04/2026 21:10

Absolute cringe

HungryHerbivore · 04/04/2026 21:10

The only time I've experienced this was after flying through thunder and lightning in windy conditions in a tiny plane that felt like it was made from a meccano set. Felt it was deserved tbh!

SheWillBeTheDeathOfMe · 04/04/2026 21:11

Totally cringe, we have a family game of scissors, paper, stone and the loser has to clap. I lost once but bottled out and did the most pathetic clap thus embarrassing myself and losing the respect of my silly husband and children.

I’ve only seen this on American flights (either to, from or in the US). It’s super weird, like you thought there was a chance you wouldn’t make it.

I mean, there is always a chance you might not make it! But even so, let’s try to keep a grip on ourselves.

I do sometimes think I deserve a round of applause for a particularly lovely parallel park, but asking for one is off the scale cringe!

crazeekat · 04/04/2026 21:14

Long haul, or USA clap

Glendaruel · 04/04/2026 21:14

Only acceptable if the collective of the plane felt like there was a chance it wouldn't reach its destination.

SeriaMau · 04/04/2026 21:16

MissCooCooMcgoo · 04/04/2026 20:09

Eh, why not? So little joy in life sometimes. I say we should cheer and clap at more things tbh.

Plenty of time to be miserable when your dead.

Yes, the autopilot really appreciates that round of applause.

Notmyreality · 04/04/2026 21:17

Cringe

Long haul, or USA clap

We fly to the USA several times a year, and long haul (to Caribbean) every Feb. No-one has ever clapped.

Notmyreality · 04/04/2026 21:18

tartyflette · 04/04/2026 20:47

Only seen this on, er ‘budget’ airline flights. Never on BA.
(not snobbery, factual. Although I have sworn off both Easyjet and Ryanair after being messed about and treated badly.)

It’s a very American thing irrespective of airline.

Long haul, or USA clap

You’ve just reminded me that I once took an internal flight within the US and when we had a very rough, skiddy landing, the pilot came over the PA and said ‘Whoops!’

I just find it a bit odd.
Surely the pilots can't hear passengers clapping anyway? They're behind a door from the cabin, wearing headphones, and there's noise from the engines.
I'll stand corrected if MN's resident pilot says otherwise 😁

Never heard it in thirty ish years of commercial flying but maybe none of my landings were ever worthy of applause..😨

Comtesse · 04/04/2026 21:20

Only time I’ve had that happen was landing in South America - maybe it’s seen as normal there?? Still cringe though!

Delphiniumandlupins · 04/04/2026 21:21

Do people really not thank bus drivers? I wouldn't shout "Thank you Driver" if I wasn't getting off at the front door but otherwise I always do. I think it's cute when I hear a toddler wishing the driver a good day. Maybe it's regional.

I would join in applause for the plane crew if it seemed a tricky flight.

JulietteHasAGun · 04/04/2026 21:24

I think it’s bonkers to be honest, not like the pilot can even hear through the cockpit door surely?

Dont think it is universal, DD’s Canadian bF was surprised on a Ryanair flight when people clapped.

C152 · 04/04/2026 21:24

I've only experienced this once, after the plane had been hit by lightening and experienced a lot of turbulence when trying to land. I think it's weird if people clap for a normal landing after a normal flight.

QueenStevie · 04/04/2026 21:25

I do remember a flight back from Florida. The flight over (we should have been getting on that plane to come home) was hit by dreadful turbulence, resulting in several cabin crew being hospitalised with injuries. We had to stay overnight in a hotel near the airport whilst they got a new crew out to staff our flight, and then give them the necessary rest period. We all clapped that flight as we were just so glad to be back in one piece and grateful after the long delay and grateful to the crew for stepping in to cover their colleagues.

Glendaruel · 04/04/2026 21:14

Agree. Otherwise, it's complete cringe.
