Is a round of applause when a plane lands lovely or cringe?

I think it's lovely.

I love it - always warms the cockles when I hear it but feel the whole cabin needs to get involved for it to sound less naff. I think it reminds me of the first time I flew to Rome and everyone clapped on landing - felt like Italian joie de vivre in action compared to the stuffy brits.

ShanghaiDiva · 04/04/2026 20:39

I used to live in China and it was pretty common on domestic flights.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 04/04/2026 20:39

It's awful.

GardenCovent · 04/04/2026 20:40

I’ve never been on a flight recently where anyone has clapped, I remember it happening in the 1980’s though, it seemed to be quite normal then

wigywhoo · 04/04/2026 20:34

only occurs on budget flights,I believe.

No. I've seen it on various flights.

I just find it a bit odd.
Surely the pilots can't hear passengers clapping anyway? They're behind a door from the cabin, wearing headphones, and there's noise from the engines.
I'll stand corrected if MN's resident pilot says otherwise 😁

tartyflette · 04/04/2026 20:47

Only seen this on, er ‘budget’ airline flights. Never on BA.
(not snobbery, factual. Although I have sworn off both Easyjet and Ryanair after being messed about and treated badly.)

7238SM · 04/04/2026 20:49

I've clearly had it wrong all the years I lived in London, and never once did I clap my tube driver for getting me to the right stop. 😬

shellyleppard · 04/04/2026 20:50

If its been a rough landing or a bumpy one then yes definitely a round of applause!

Lurkingandlearning · 04/04/2026 20:51

I’m puzzled. The mention of decorum made me think that poster feels there is something a little well to do about flying. There really isn’t.

And why would anyone feel embarrassed about what complete strangers do? I can understand some people might feel embarrassed by how their friends and family express happiness, that would be because they are insecure arseholes, but to cringe over how strangers behave is baffling. Is it because you think you are the focal point in any situation so anything that happens around you reflects on you? Or even has anything at all to do with you?

I don’t clap when planes land though

RubieChewsDay · 04/04/2026 20:51

Whilst, I wouldn’t start a round of applause myself, I judge the people judging the clapping more harshly than I judge the clappers. Surely, it falls in the category, but well intended and completely harmless even if it’s not your thing.

Agree. And I’ve never seen people thank the bus driver either. Most of them in London would probably give you a death stare if you breath in their direction let alone speak.

cottingleyfairy · 04/04/2026 20:56

It’s common.

I heard a few on a BA flight last week

TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis · 04/04/2026 20:57

My 2.5yo decided to do it spontaneously when we landed back in the UK. No one else was doing it, he just started as soon as we hit the tarmac!

So I now think it's adorable.

IkeaMeatballGravy · 04/04/2026 20:57

I hate it, it is such a harsh noise in an enclosed space. If it's exited kids it's tolerable but it's cringe when adults so it.

Catcatcatcatcat · 04/04/2026 20:58

It’s really cringe, and what Gen X call Basic Bitch.

ACynicalDad · 04/04/2026 20:59

Pathetic, unless it’s high winds or Lukla Airport in Nepal, just shy of Everest - rock face at one end, cliff at the other.

If I got off at the front (not sure you can on many buses any more) I always thanked the bus drivers in London, they never seemed to take offence.

Have to say I fly numerous times a year on various airlines and I’ve only ever encountered it once in my life . And the whole plane looked at the group clapping like they’d lost the plot.

HotRootsAndNaughtyToots · 04/04/2026 21:03

Ugh. So cringe. I would judge hard and think twice about flying with that airline again.

You mean Gen Z. Gen X are too busy grumbling about how we always used to thank the bus driver.

Nmss · 04/04/2026 21:05

I' ex crew and my ds is a pilot- it's cringe. Also asking crew to announce anything over the PA very cringe, would you ask Tesco, Asda or Aldi to say Happy Birthday/ Happy Anniversay/ congratulations over their PA?!

Namingbaba · 04/04/2026 21:05

All the snobbish comments on here are pathetic. Makes me want to clap on my next flight 😂

Sidebeforeself · 04/04/2026 21:06

This is why I always travel with the saucepan and wooden spoon that I still have from the “Clap for the NHS” days.
