Is a round of applause when a plane lands lovely or cringe?

I think it's lovely.

Cringe. I want a peaceful flight.

Burritoplease · 05/04/2026 09:47

We’re trying to have a functioning society whilst some clap when a plane lands. Do you clap when a bus driver pulls up at a stop?

tnorfotkcab · 05/04/2026 09:40

There's no need for them to be snobs and disparaging of "poor people"

They can think it's cringe, but they don't need to insult people or insinuate that only poor people do it and they're classless.

Poor and classless are not the same though.
You can be rich and tacky.
People on here are making sweeping generalisations but most people recognise a bit of truth in the observation's.

All the snobbish comments on here are pathetic. Makes me want to clap on my next flight 😂

They're actually comments that highlight just how lacking in global travel experience these posters are. Ignorance really is bliss.

Just weird imo
Do you clap your taxi driver?

I would if they managed to land their taxi in the kind of winds we had last night.

FernandoSor · 05/04/2026 10:02

Never seen this, and I fly a lot - up to 50 legs a year in some years.

It definitely happens but as I think has been mentioned a few times there seems to be a cultural aspect to it.

FlorenceAndTheSewingMachine · 05/04/2026 10:22

I fly a lot and for me it only happens when I fly to Madeira, it doesn't matter what airline where it is B.A or easy jet the whole plane ends up clapping, it's due to the runway as it was extended in the 80's and it's still one of the worlds shortest, and due to the mountains and the sea and the crosswinds it's a difficult landing so to land there you have to be specially trained, that's why they clap.

tnorfotkcab · 05/04/2026 08:32

Why should they care what strangers think?

You obviously do, or you wouldn’t have posted…

There's a lot of jockeying for coolness points on this thread. I think you just won the boiled sweet prize.

Why thank you

eggandonion · 05/04/2026 10:42

In the eighties we were paying over 100 quid to fly from England to Ireland. Now we pay half that. So I applaud Ryanair. About half the destinations from our local airport are Ryanair flights so your social status or class doesn't count for much if you want to go to where they fly. Air France are excellent...but I don't go to Paris very often!
There are often rounds of applause at Irish funerals and I wouldn't be surprised at the coffin being applauded slipping away at a crematorium.
People cringe a lot on mumsnet. So much and so often I assume that they are physically and metaphorically up themselves!

wheresthesnowgone · 05/04/2026 10:44

Have you ever been on an el Al flight landing in Israel? Clapping and singing

sugarapplelane · 05/04/2026 10:50

The only time I was on a flight that merited clapping was on a New York to London flight and the British pilot announced that London had just been awarded the 2012 Olympics. The cheers and whoops were astonishingly wonderful. We all got a free glass of bubbly 🥂

Depends if it's a normal landing or a near death experience

I clap my bus driver when I get to my stop.

Thanking bus drivers seems to be the new way of looking down on people.

I've always done it, because my DM always did it. And it was never out of place when I started using buses for sixth form. There would be a whole queue of students politely saying "Thank you" with some of the more laddy guys saying "Cheers drive".

However this can start an argument too easily as it's sacred law that you never do that in London and it's the preserve of the ever-so-friendly north etc etc.

Regarding the OP .... it may seem a bit cringe, but did it leave everyone feeling a little bit jollier after ? If so what's the harm ? Life is grim enough.

Also, successfully carrying tens if not hundreds of people through the air in a machine that will probably end the lives of all on board if it goes wrong .....

Why in the name of all that is holy would you not clap ??????????

mugglewump · 05/04/2026 11:01

Do frequent flyers do it? No.

Do people on an annual, package holiday, charter flight do it? Yes.
Who do you prefer to align yourself with?

Waitingfordoggo · 05/04/2026 11:04

I don’t recognise the north vs south bus thanking behaviour. I’m in the south east and have been here all my life. I always thank bus drivers (and taxi drivers and shop assistants etc) and most of my fellow passengers also thank the driver when they disembark.

But then I think the north vs south friendliness theory is inaccurate overall.

Why, is one group better than the other?

It pops up every so often when people (from t'north) post saying how grim that there London is.

It may have something to do with buses that have (or used to have) 2 sets of doors - the exit ones being in the middle so away from the driver.

eggandonion · 05/04/2026 11:10

My daughter...Irish...spent a year in London and thought people were very friendly on the whole.
Gatwick flights to Belfast in the eighties were in the same part of the airport as El Al! In Heathrow passengers to Belfast were put into a big cold portakabin. The Gatwick flights were slightly cheaper. They were British Midland and you got a cream tea.(probably cringe worthy due to the jam or cream situation).

TonyDancer · 05/04/2026 11:12

Lovely. Ds2 had an awful flight back from Bulgaria. So windy the pilot was trying to land sideways. He deserved a clap

Jasmin71 · 05/04/2026 11:14

I laughed when everyone did this when I landed in San Francisco in 1998. I wondered what planet they were on. I saw a group clapping at a sunset as well. I think it must have been an American thing.

DizziLizzy · 05/04/2026 11:22

JumpinJehoshaphat · 04/04/2026 20:07

It’s so embarrassing. No one with even an ounce of decorum would do it.

Yeah agree but they do 🙄

Why would anyone care if strangers on a plane think they are a frequent flyer? 😂. I might get my colleagues to do it next time we fly for a client visit, my CEO is normally up for a laugh.

eggandonion · 05/04/2026 11:42

Im definitely doing it at every opportunity now. I want the CEO to join in @SheWillBeTheDeathOfMe .
