Is a round of applause when a plane lands lovely or cringe?

I think it's lovely.

Why, is one group better than the other?

Probably just means that frequent fliers are more blase about the experience and don't find it as exciting as infrequent travellers.

aspidernamedfluffy · 05/04/2026 11:44

It depends..a routine flight? No.
Landing safely when you've been told to brace for landing and the worst injury was a broken arm, yeah too right we clapped.

One is certainly more irritable than the other. With all that flying they do, you’d think they’d be more prepared for all the things they complain about with their air of superiority. They’d do well to learn some calming techniques to protect their blood pressure already at risk from flying a lot.

The Very Important people are too busy standing in the aisles to be first off to clap.

Instant up as soon as I can, sue me.

I don't care about getting off the plane faster, I just want to bloody move and stretch a bit.

Plus I am tall and strong, and almost always end up getting massive bags down for women under 5ft who can barely lift them.

eggandonion · 05/04/2026 13:58

I wait for the aisle to clear before I struggle to get my bag down...teeny tiny elderly lady that I am.

Thanking bus drivers seems to be the new way of looking down on people.

I've always done it, because my DM always did it. And it was never out of place when I started using buses for sixth form. There would be a whole queue of students politely saying "Thank you" with some of the more laddy guys saying "Cheers drive".

However this can start an argument too easily as it's sacred law that you never do that in London and it's the preserve of the ever-so-friendly north etc etc.

Regarding the OP .... it may seem a bit cringe, but did it leave everyone feeling a little bit jollier after ? If so what's the harm ? Life is grim enough.

Also, successfully carrying tens if not hundreds of people through the air in a machine that will probably end the lives of all on board if it goes wrong .....

Why in the name of all that is holy would you not clap ??????????

Londoners that are brought up well rather than dragged up will always thank the driver. Even a train driver if you pass them/their carriage. Or the conductor if there is one. It's just good manners.

CrackTheWalnut · 05/04/2026 14:55

I’ve only seen it once, on a Ryanair flight to Majorca and thought it was cringy.
But I wave at train passengers on my country walks which is probably very none U.
Thanking a bus driver is surely common courtesy.

GreaterCassowary · 05/04/2026 15:01

I've only ever witnessed this when it's been a really rough landing.

Do frequent flyers do it? No.

Do people on an annual, package holiday, charter flight do it? Yes.
Who do you prefer to align yourself with?

How do you know frequent fliers don't do it?

Do you honestly believe that people on planes all over the skies above the US, a great many of whom will clap on touchdown, are infrequent fliers?
Of course you may well dismiss these people as uncouth by definition, because American...

Why do you care so much about 'aligning' with the blasé?

It's pure snobbery and yet another example of how the British are oppressed by the class system, and love and embrace that oppression.

That is pure snobbery right there. I used to be a frequent flier but now I just go on my annual trip every year. What should I do?

I feel like this isn’t a thing anymore anyway. Although I was once on a flight with a dodgy landing, very dodge. And people clapped and hugged each other. I had kind of disassociated myself so I just sat frozen. But in hindsight I should have joined in.

Bewareofstepfords · 06/04/2026 01:41

It's cringey but I blushingly remember doing it on at least one occasion when I was new to jetting off abroad and was mightily grateful to land safely after some turbulence.
Years and many flights later I still marvel at the massive amount of responsibility these jet pilots take on for hundreds of lives. They must be very tough psychologically as well as highly skilled.
I wouldn't want to drive a community bus!

I’ve only seen this on American flights (either to, from or in the US). It’s super weird, like you thought there was a chance you wouldn’t make it.

Funny, I’ve only seen it on British and Australian flights

aintallbutterfliesandrainbows · 06/04/2026 02:57

I think it’s acceptable for children. Mine do!

I heard a few on a BA flight last week

Ah, but was it taken up by more than just a few people or did it fade away in polite embarrassment?

Its not objectively one or the other because its a matter of opinion.

Mine is that its stupid.

Perfect response, no notes (as the kids say)

SpringAndSunshineIsHere · 06/04/2026 20:10

I love it. They do it in S America. It makes me smile 😊

The only time I was on a flight that merited clapping was on a New York to London flight and the British pilot announced that London had just been awarded the 2012 Olympics. The cheers and whoops were astonishingly wonderful. We all got a free glass of bubbly 🥂

Aw 😊
