If someone invites you for 'nibbles' what would you think was being offered?

I was invited, along with some others, to 'nibbles and drinks' at a fairly recent friend's house last night.

Everyone did the usual and asked if they could bring anything and everyone took a bottle and a little gift for the host.

The 'nibbles' was a small ramekin handed to each of us with peanuts in it. So a nibble if you will. What would you serve if you invited people for nibbles?

Cheese straws, mini sausage rolls and crisps/nuts

SlightlyUnexpected · 08/02/2026 12:28

Nuts, crisps, olives, probably.

What’s weirder to me is starting a post on the internet to complain about the offerings of a new friend who invited you round.

I'd serve drinks (usually wine and soft drinks) and snacks - nuts, crisps, dips, often a cheeseboard, olives etc. Not a meal, but nice stuff. However, we were once invited out for drinks and nibbles that turned out to be a couple of small bottles of beer between four of us, and a tiny plastic bag full of mixed seeds and a few peanuts, like a bag of birdseed. We were gobsmacked. Still talk about it! And no, we didn't have a nice time, and they were infinitely more wealthy than we were. Just stingy.

HoorayHattie · 08/02/2026 12:29

I would have felt dreadfully sorry for anyone who has a peanut allergy!

sundayvibeswig22 · 08/02/2026 12:34

Nibbles for me would be crisps, nuts, hummus, olives, cheese, crackers

bornintelligent · 08/02/2026 12:36

Breadsticks,dips,crisps ,crudités.

Cars4Gov · 08/02/2026 12:37

I think it depends on the event, drinks & nibbles before going to the theatre would be different to drinks and nibbles where you expect the guests to be there for hours. If it hours then you expect to offer more than a bowl of peanuts

MrTwisterHasABlister · 08/02/2026 12:37

I’d do a cheese board with 4 cheeses, dates, grapes and chutneys, crackers, crisps, nuts, olives, hot sausage rolls, dips, pizza squares and cheese straws. And then some kind of salad or slaw.

Soonenough · 08/02/2026 12:38

I fecking hate to hear that .

LucyLoo1972 · 08/02/2026 12:41

id expect more than that. btu honestly I wish this was all I had to worry about - I lost everythign in my life through a tragic set of events - my career, health, marriage, savings, friends. everything

Little pastry things, cheeses, some chicken wings, maybe sausage rolls, cheese, skewery things, lots of little desserts.

Starters and desserts really.

I'd call that a buffet

Nibbles is one or two types of what used to be called canapes if you're going for it, plus olives, posh nuts and crisps, and a dip of some kind. Maybe cheeses with bread if it's instead of dinner rather than before.

SpecialAgentMaggieBell · 08/02/2026 12:42

If someone invited me for "nibbles", I'd think they were a pretentious twat and decline.

ArtesianWater · 08/02/2026 12:46

Assuming people are coming for the whole evening:

If I had only invited for 'drinks' I would also provide olives, antipasti, crisps, breadsticks, nuts, hummus and dip.

If I specifically stated 'nibbles' I would provide the same, but add a few more substantial finger foods, like quiche slices, a cheeseboard, a fruit platter.

I always over-cater because it's better than the opposite.

travailtotravel · 08/02/2026 12:47

Oh! One of my things is to always be "apero ready" - I know, so nobby. My apero ready is little sausicon sec, olives, cheesy cubes (usually manchego or aged gouda). Almonds or peanuts. Crisps optional. Technically apero or nibbles is 6-8 (or 5-7) then dinner ... but sometimes drinks means come after dinner and is then more about the above cheese, almonds and chocolate. If I invite you for dinner you get nibbles, a full 4 course (starter, main, cheese, pud) and then a little digestif. I am so extra but everyone loves it!

honeylulu · 08/02/2026 12:48

I think I would expect stuff like sausage rolls, cheese, crackers as well as crisps and nuts if nibbles expressly mentioned.

If I was just invited for "drinks" I wouldn't expect any food but would not be surprised if crisps/nuts/olives were then offered. then

Nibbles suggests something between a handful of nuts/crisps and a buffet meal, otherwise why mention it?

nibbles to me is def not desserts

its crisps, nuts and anything that can be eaten with fingers and without a plate

if it needs a plate its a buffet

RuthW · 08/02/2026 12:50

I would expect some nuts and a few nice crisps.

Beachtastic · 08/02/2026 12:55

I would have started chewing the furniture!

SP2024 · 08/02/2026 12:57

Nuts, crisps, maybe sausage rolls, dips, olives. Party food essentially.

Bubble678910 · 08/02/2026 12:57

Yes, "nibbles" I would presume nuts/crisps/maybe some cocktail sausages. Depends on the time of day and the occassion though. If it was mid-afternoon and for a birthday party, I'd maybe expect a more substantial snack of finger food, whereas a quick drink on a random weekend at 6pm before everyone goes home for dinner, then just crisps and nuts.

WhineAndWine1 · 08/02/2026 12:57

M&S type canapé things like 4-5 pp and drinks. I wouldn’t expect sandwiches, chicken wings or sausage rolls

CasuallyConfused · 08/02/2026 12:59

I wouldn't be expecting much, but more than some nuts. Probably small finger food, olivers, crackers with little toppings, those teeny pizzas, stuff you just pick at from a tray, canapés I guess. I'd eat a proper meal before attending somewhere for "drinks and nibbles".

PinkTonic · 08/02/2026 13:00

With the drinks before a meal nibbles means olives, a couple of types of nuts and crisps. If it’s just drinks and nibbles and time bound I’d also do things with dips and some canapés. If I thought people would stay all evening I’d make something substantial like a chilli, curry, tagine or similar for later, or maybe cheese/ charcuterie.

ConcernedOfClapham · 08/02/2026 13:00

When I was in my twenties, it usually meant hash brownies 😆

ManchesterGirl2 · 08/02/2026 13:02

I'd expect a snack but not enough to fill me up. I'd eat a full dinner and then see what happened.
